Development history of SCI (Science Citation Index) documents from China was reviewed in this study. Total SCI documents, citations, current positions of all disciplines from China were analyzed and surveys of SCI documents from all provinces and municipalities were made. Following main conclusions were drawn: 1) China witnessed booming development of SCI documents in the last decades and are entering balanced stage; 2) China is one of largest producer of SCI documents and high quality documents. However, the average quality is low; 3) Severe unbalanced situations were found on the amount of SCI documents divided by population and GDP from different provinces and municipalities in China. The situations were discussed and some suggestions were proposed.
