| The oral material collection of Bancroft Library started in the 1970s. It's more than half a century earlier than the establishment of Columbia University Oral History Research Office(1948)，which is the symbol of the modern oral history birth. It has experienced two stages: one is the "Bancroft Dictations" from the 1870s to the 1880s，the other is the revival stage from 1953 till now. The "Bancroft Dictations" inspired the early oral history programs in America. At the same time，the successful measures which the Bancroft Library has taken to improve the collection and management of the oral material set a good example to other libraries，including the establishment of Friends of Bancroft Library and Donated Tapes Collection together with the "critical use" of the transcriptions. 2 figs. 22 refs. |
