English pun is the humorous of a word to suggest different meanings or applications or of words having the same or nearly the same sound but different meanings. Due to the great discrepancy between English and Chinese in terms of pronunciation, form, sentence structure and ways of expression, the translation of pun into Chinese has been generally thought as untranslatable. Hence, the translator faces great challenges in its Chinese translation. However, puns are not necessarily untranslatable. Six methods are usually employed in English puns’ translation into Chinese.  相似文献

Lifelong education was developed in Europe in the 1970's. A learning society arises when principles of adult education are properly deployed. Vertical integration concerns learning throughout the lifespan. Horizontal integration requires education to occur in informal and nonformal as well as familiar formal settings. Democratization demands the dismantling of barriers that impede access to education and involvement of learners in the design and management of their own education. Chinese citizens have always learned from a broad array (of not just educational settings). The initiative to build 61 "learning cities"demonstrates a genius for adapting western ideas. China has already transcended some limitations of European ideas about lifelong education. However, because of ageism, the obsession with formal education and need to navigate within the contours of the party-state, building a learning society faces special challenges. In China, as elsewhere, universities are not leading these initiatives. They need to become more flexible and open.  相似文献

They are : Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Taipei and Bangkok. Twenty percent of these parents knew of bullying in schools last year. In Manila, bullying appeared to be most serious. On the whole, schools, parents and students are not doing enough to face or solve the problem of bullying. It is often ignored. Sometimes the school knows nothing about it; so it does not deal with it at all or effectively.  相似文献

A good teacher is often depicted by virtue of certain isolated competencies, such as knowledge, skills and attitudes. Teachers' identity and their spiritual and emotional integrity are often ignored. This paper reports a qualitative study of the professional identity of an English teacher in a middle school to understand the identity and ex-pertise of a beloved teacher. Through interviews and classroom observation, the study reveals (1) that the teacher who owns a more advanced diploma or profes- sional certificate but confines himself/herself to transmitting only formal knowledge is not well received by his/her students, and (2) that the teacher who is appreci- ated by his/her students teaches with heart and integrity of identity, and possesses a capacity for connectedness among his/her personal experience, subject, social context and students' needs. The study triggers some implications for pre-service teacher education in China. The authors argue that teacher education programs must concern themselves with nourishing persons rather than technicians who are merely equipped with competencies.  相似文献

During the decision-making process, especially in multi-disciplinary complex cases, assessment technique is needed to assist policy-makers in making the right decision. Many of such assessment techniques have been developed for policy-makers, but the inevitable subjectivity of policy-makers often becomes the main obstacle in making the right or proper policy. Interlink decision-making index (IDMI) is a newly proposed assessment method with the advantages of being simple to use and having less human interference over other methods, as it does not require a weighting process of each selection criterion. This paper implements IDMI to assist with decision-making in national or regional low-carbon development, using China as a case study. The Chinese government has annotmced its carbon emission reduction target along with other development targets by 2020. Many policy settings can be chosen in order to achieve those targets. The problem is how to determine the best setting and the means by which decision-makers can avoid subjectivity and extremes. A number of policy setting options are generated carefully by a system dynamic model under different policy scenarios. The IDMI demonstrates a perfect way to assist in selecting the "best" among all the options that can achieve the goals within the acceptable range.  相似文献

Is that flower? Or is it a bird?Actually, it is a bird. The Blue-Crowned Pigeon is strange in many ways. The largest of all pigeons, the crowned pigeon may grow to be nearly as big as a turkey. They have snowy blue and white plumes on their crowns. Both the mother and father birds make milk for the young. Usually there are 2 eggs per nest, but they raise two or more broods each year. They satisfy their appetites with seeds, berries, fallen fruit, and insects. I hope you like this freaky bird.  相似文献

I.Features of Chinese and American Infant Family Education
As we know, with the development of the world, the parents are required to establish a new scientific concept about family education of infants which includes the remodeling of par- ents' roles, proper construction of infants' in- telligence quality and proper attitudes towards infants' improper behaviors and habits. There are great different between Chinese and Ameri- can culture, thus the infant family education are also different. They have their own features in conception and educational ways. China is a long historical country, its deep educational culture influence the elements of infant family education. So the Chinese parents always em- phasis on social enlightenment, the parents take the social compatible enlightenment seriously. They often train their children under established forms, and lay down the broad road for their growth. Compared with Chinese, American par- ents provide the children an environment for growth resistant to them and foster their tena- cious capacity.  相似文献

Primary school curriculum for educable mentally retarded children was adopted so as to implement beginning in 2001-2002 academic year. The curriculum was designed so as to apply in primary education schools where educable mentally retarded children attend or in private classes included in the body of primary education schools. It was designed in order for such children to improve their skills of understanding themselves, establishing positive social relations, adjusting to the social, technological and physical environment, and surviving independently. This current study is based on a qualitative method, and is focused on educable mentally retarded children who are at primary school age in Turkey. Having described the characteristics of such children, their needs are explained, the curriculum developed for such children is described, and teachers' views concerning the implementation of the curriculum are presented in this research.  相似文献

Economic globalization has brought China into closer contact with the rest of the world. Chinese food, as an important part of Chinese culture, attracts foreigners who come to China. But in a lot of cases, when they look at the menus, they feel stunned and baffled. For the English translations of Chinese menus are often incomprehensible and misleading. However, such awareness has not led to an in-depth study on menu translation. In this paper, the author draws on theories of foreignization and domestication, and recommends foreignization as a main strategy and domestication as a supplementary choice. In conjunction with it, the author suggests a set of techniques for menu translation. It is hoped that this will contribute to the preservation and development of Chinese cuisine culture as a whole.  相似文献

This paper explores how the concept of social capital developed by Bourdieu and Coleman as well as the Chinese concept of guanxi (关系) or relationships facilitates students’ access to postgraduate education in a case study of a university in southeast China. The study comprises an initial survey of 381 first-year postgraduate students and a series of interviews with 30 participants. Social capital and guanxi inform analysis of the data. The results reveal that students from different social backgrounds employ different forms of social capital and guanxi networks in their decision-making about postgraduate education. They contribute to conceptualizations of how social capital is generated through guanxi in the Chinese educational context.  相似文献

This is a book on policy study in the Chinese mainland by an insider with an outsider perspective. With contemporary policies on minban schooling in Shanghai as a case study,Ding illustrates and analyzes a case of policy metamorphosis in the contemporary Chinese mainland. The book is based on a well-designed qualitative study with 65 in-depth interviews in 2001 and 2004.Ding tries to figure out the logic of policy implementation in Shanghai as an "insider" while having a clear awareness of the dilemma of studying a policy issue in her own culture. She makes the best use of her identity as an insider, not only as a Chinese but as someone who knows some "inside" stories concerning the issue interviewed. As Ding pointed out,"I had obtained some firsthand information about minban education in Shanghai,so that when I sensed that the informants were talking superficially,I let them know that I had heard some inside stories (which usually had very different versions). In this way, sensitive data emerged." (Ding,2011,p.145).This is true, since the views expressed in most interview data Ding collected cannot be found in public or official documents, and are also rarely found in the academic literature.  相似文献

Literature review noted that donor funded projects and programs are sometimes referred to as International Development: ID projects. ID projects and programs are often being provided for the developing countries like an emerging, developing or least developed country. Such projects and programs are under public sector development specifically designed for economic and social needs of developing countries. These projects or programs are either implemented by recipient governments under a bilateral (or multilateral) agreement with the donor country or through an ’implementing partner’ of the donor, frequently a non-governmental organization or professional contractor. The operating environment and culture of the host country also make ID projects different from traditional business projects and make traditional project management tools in the developed world less appropriate (Blunt and Jones, 1992). This sometimes provides big challenges to various project teams. The paper through a Case study approach evaluates an ID Chinese Government funding construction project and its pitfalls through qualitative research approach. Qualitative data was presented and discussed to provide an insight into major challenges in the implementation of ID project of such scale.  相似文献

Owing to the development of new technology and information systems, the earth has become into a "global village" and the contacts among people become more frequent and significant. When different people from different races, nationalities, or backgrounds meet together, because of culture diversity, they often behave in different ways that are not understood by the others. Hence the study of intercultural communication is very important. Traditionally the study is based upon cultures that are shared by larger cultural groups, such as Orientation-culture, Western culture, European culture, African culture, Chinese culture, American culture, or even high-context culture and low-context culture. Since this kind of division easily leads to stereotyping and exaggeration of the positive or negative values of a certain cultural group, in recent years, the study has been focused on discourses, which are sub-grouping cultures such as corporate discourse, professional discourse, generational discourse and gender discourse. Discourse systems are smaller than whole cultures and tend to take on somewhat more homogeneous characteristics, if not ideological unity. In this paper, we give definitions of culture and discourse, and mainly focus on how diverse cultural issues influence communicators' perception and behaviors in different social or professional discourses. All our efforts on this study aim at successful communication.  相似文献

The females' relatively low participation in higher education is discussed within the Nigerian society in a way that such issues are discursively placed in often contradictory, as well as extremely complicated contexts. Dominant discussions draw on the interplay between gender and students' performance across subjects, as well as on the influences of the often patriarchal school environment on students' overall performance, which with little or no attention given to parental and domestic agencies. This paper is an account of the stories of the experiences of schooling about some Nigerian school girls from the perspective of their families. The larger study from which this paper derives, examined the gendered perception of schooling amongst some senior secondary school students in a Nigerian suburb. A number of discussions among the 25 girls (and 25 boys) who participated in the study were analyzed to understand how gender played in their perceptions of schooling influences upon their lives. As this project was grounded in the interpretivist qualitative research paradigm, discursive interpretivist approach was employed to interrogate how parental and domestic agencies, can play upon the aspirations of young girls for higher education in both complex and subtle ways. Recommendations for changes in policy and practice are made.  相似文献
