Academic libraries acquiring e-books through approval plans and other acquisition methods might question whether their collections are properly balanced between e-books and print books since patron needs vary across subject areas. This study examines seven years of monograph purchases at Texas A&M University Libraries (TAMU) through the approval plan vendor. Acquisition and use data are analyzed across subject areas. Study results inform how to balance print and e-collections to effectively support academic programs. TAMU purchased 78% of the monographs in print despite adopting an e-preferred approval plan, though most subject areas had higher e-book use compared to print. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Patterns of use of electronic versions of journals supplied by an academic health sciences library were examined to determine whether they differed from patterns of use among corresponding print titles and to relate the applicability of print collection development practices to an electronic environment. METHODS: Use data supplied by three major vendors of electronic journals were compared to reshelving data for corresponding print titles, impact factors, and presence on Brandon/Hill Lists. RESULTS: In collections where one-click access from a database record to the full text of articles was possible, electronic use correlated with print use across journal pairs. In both versions, Brandon/Hill titles were used more frequently than non-Brandon/Hill titles, use had modest correlations with journals' impact factors, and clinical use appeared to be higher than research use. Titles that had not been selected for the library's print collections, but which were bundled into publishers' packages, received little use compared to electronic titles also selected in print. CONCLUSIONS: Collection development practices based on quality and user needs can be applied with confidence to the electronic environment. Facilitating direct connections between citation databases and the corresponding journal articles regardless of platform or publisher will support scholarship and quality health care. 相似文献

The librarians evaluated the print reference collection and standard collection development lists as potential benchmarks for the electronic collection, and they determined which books were available in electronic format. This study assesses the reference collection management practices and strategies used in the reference departments of academic members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Librarians who participate in the management of the humanities and social science reference collections within ARL member libraries responded to an online survey about collection development policies, acquisition processes, collection use, weeding, and marketing of their reference collections. The results of this survey suggest that a large percentage of academic ARL member libraries are weeding their collections regularly, measuring use of the print and electronic reference collection, and moving decidedly toward electronic reference materials. 相似文献

随着期刊市场纸本与电子共同出版模式的形成,以及期刊出版业的垄断集团化,为了获取高额利润,一些出版商采取纸本与电子版捆绑销售模式来销售电子期刊数据库,其捆绑模式有保留现有纸本订购、规定一个最低订购额以及提供E-only和纸本+电子捆绑三种形式。随着图书馆馆藏数字化,出版商的纸本捆绑销售出现了一些转变,有的出版商允许用户将纸本刊转成电子刊,有的允许用户取消纸本载体转而支付电子内容费,有的取消纸本捆绑启用E-only模式,但这些转变并没有给用户节省多少费用,并没有在真正意义上取消纸本捆绑,只是出版商换了一种销售方式而已。 相似文献

ABSTRACT The number of electronic books (e-books) that are available is increasing rapidly. Libraries are acquiring them individually, in large groups, and as part of collections. Off-campus librarians perceive them to be the best solution to the problems and expenses related to loaning and shipping print books to off-campus students. Abstract For most research libraries, remote storage of significant portions of their print collections has become an economic necessity. Historically, user objections to remote storage have focused on access-related issues: i.e., lack of browsability, cumbersome requesting procedures, lengthy retrieval times, and lack of content information about materials held in storage locations. Research libraries today operate in an environment of high user expectations for convenience and immediacy in getting information, and for accessing that information remotely. In an environment filled with such expectations, print materials with no alternate electronic format, stored in off-site facilities, and inadequately described in online catalogs are less likely to get even the occasional usage they merit. Given the necessity of remote storage, research libraries need to address the issue of making stored print collections more accessible. This paper discusses three strategies for enhancing access to remotely stored library collections: (1) user-focused access policies; (2) enhanced OPAC displays; and (3) new technologies for retrieval and delivery. 相似文献

Collection development in public libraries is performed by one or more librarians who make use of a variety of selection tools. Computers and information systems are becoming increasingly important tools for selectors because they offer alternatives for assessing user needs, for gathering information about published materials, and for obtaining materials quickly. This paper describes a case study of twelve public library systems, the tasks they perform, and the sources they use in collection development. The selectors reported satisfaction with their jobs, increasing reliance upon information systems and electronic resources, and the need for system improvements to support selection for local collections in a publishing climate responsive to popular taste. 相似文献
