This paper explores the relationship between the original and its translation by interpreting Benjamin’s three metaphors from his The Translator’s Task. The exploration starts with the metaphor of“the tangent of a circle”,where it is interpreted that although the translated version should be faithful to its original in terms of meaning, yet it is a deviation due to different internal and external factors. Then,in the metaphor of“afterlife”,the discussion demonstrates that the translated version proceeds from the original, but the original depends on it for its survival and afterlife in different eras. Later, based on the metaphor of“fragments of a vessel”,the author states that the original and its translation are equal and complementary, just like the fragments of a vessel, responsible for the development and renewal of each other through translation. Finally,it is concluded that a better understanding of their relationship can offer us a new perspective in translation studies and practice.  相似文献

Different languages are unable to be separated from their specific social culture backgrounds. Vocabulary is language’s subsystem. English metaphor is an important part of vocabulary; it belongs to the semantic motivation of English lexicology. The social culture of a language reflects more from its linguistic metaphor. Metaphor is a significant language phenomenon that is closely linked with its culture. Much of the deep culture of a language (such as view of life, view of value, etc.) is instantiated and transmitted through the metaphors people use on the daily basis. From the angle of the relation between language and social culture, this article discusses the function of English social culture in forming English metaphors.  相似文献

William Wordsworth was the representative of the British "Lake poets" In his poems he aimed at simplicity and purity of the language, fighting against the conventional forms of the 18th century poetry. He transformed his observation of the landscape into the revelation of the beauty of nature in poetry, and thus expressed his nature philosophy. In this article the author briefly analyses the organization of his poem: "Ode: Intimation of Immortality" and mainly elaborates her understanding of the poet’s na-ture-philosophy in four points:(a) Man is sensitive to all natural influences in childhood.(b) Nature has a moral and spiritual sig-nificance and helps the poet understand the mystery of human life.(c) Life is but a stage.(d) All good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings;it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility.  相似文献

"Beauty is truth, truth beauty"-the famous line in English romantic poet John Keats’Ode on a Grecian Urn-has triggered wide discussion and numerous interpretations. From the point of"negative capability", a phrase first coined by Keats himself, this paper is attempting to display the consistency between that poetic line and the poet’s creation and life attitude on the whole. For this purpose, this paper will mainly introduce and interpret five of Keats’famous odes in the order of their display of his"rising acceptance of life": Ode to a Nightingale, Ode on a Grecian Urn, Ode to Autumn, Ode on Melancholy and Ode on Indolence. This paper would like to show in the first three Keats’s positive quest in different aspects and on certain levels, the fourth the underlying tone of life’s polyphonous song, and the final the"negative capability"that constitutes his healthy attitude toward creation and life. Finally, this paper hopes to demonstrate that it is such capability that enables the poet to growingly accept life, and it is also essential to him as a philosophical poet.  相似文献

In the study of metaphor, as a branch of the general cognitive science, cognitive linguistics has been walking forward at all times. In recent years, attention has gradually been paid on the metaphor study in the Chinese academic circles, and some domestic scholars have carried out research one after another, mainly through some daily expression, poetry, prose or novel to analyze and demonstrate the similarities and differences of love metaphors in Chinese and western culture. The new exploration of the role of metaphor in poetry and the cognitive mechanism was included, and it gained some achievements. The innovation of this paper is that it breaks the confinition to everyday expression, literature, combing with classic and modern songs in English and Chinese, to compare the love metaphor in English and Chinese songs.  相似文献

This study investigates whether L2 learners of English rely on their L1 (in this case Chinese) when attempting to comprehend an idiom in English and whether the student’s level of proficiency has any effect on L1 use in understanding L2 idioms. Using think-aloud protocol, the following conclusions were reached: 1) Almost all subjects translated English idioms into Chinese and searched a match, i.e. there exist transfer and interference of L1 in understanding L2 idioms.2) When the L1 was unable to help for understanding different idioms, good students were able to use conceptual strategies (i.e. metaphors and schema) better than poor students. This paper concludes with a suggestion that metaphor instruction be used to teach L2 idioms since a student cannot get very far when relying solely on his L1.  相似文献

As a unique feature of literature, poem brings readers music beauty, image beauty, visual beauty as well as symbolic beauty. Robert Frost is an American contemporary poet who is good at stylistic feature of poems, especially in macroscopic organization, rhetorical methods, grammatical metaphor, vocabulary, rhythmic feature, and semantic relations. Generally, sound is related to phonetics and phonology. Patterns of sound can create melodious effect in poetry, and sometimes a single vowel or consonant will make the verse or even the particular poem significant. Sometimes musical or incantatory effects are achieved through devices such as onomatopoeia, alliteration, assonance and rhythm. A stylistic analysis of Robert Frost’s famous poem"Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening"is given, which mainly focused on its language features. Through the excellent choice of words and organization of sound, Frost makes the simplest pieces into meaningful poems with beautiful melody and brings readers refreshing sense, flatus of life, tranquility and geniality.  相似文献

Robert Frost once said that a poet“speaks in parables and in hints and inindirections,”for“poetry provides the one permissible way of saying one thingand meaning another.”In After Apple-Picking,one of his best-known poems,Frost again speaks indirectly,in parrables and hints;he is not just talkingabout apple-picking when he says“But I am done with apple-picking now.”What he actually hints is that the“I”(herein indicates the farmer)has justbeen through with his struggle against nature and life.  相似文献

Since the study of Shakespeare’s sonnets came to China, people come to an agreement that there is more than one theme running through these sonnets. The most popular and well-accepted ones are singing for fairness, kindness and truth, singing for friendship, and singing for love.Among all these themes, time, running through these sonnets from the beginning to the end,is absolutely one of the most important. In the eyes of the poet, time is cruel and destructive;however,he figures out poetry as a key way to triumph over it.This article attempts to argue for the triumph of poetry over time in Shakespeare’s sonnets based on an analysis to the poetry.  相似文献
