Abstract The Association for Values Education and Research (AVER) is an interdisciplinary group of researchers located at the University of British Columbia. Focusing upon the competencies deemed necessary for a morally educated person, research, both conceptual and empirical, has been carried out. Teaching/learning units have been developed in order to expose students to value issues and to teach some of the processes of normative reasoning. Individual development plans (IDPs) have been promoted nationally as a tool to help research trainees explore career opportunities and set career goals. Despite the interest in IDPs from a policy perspective, there is little information about how they have been used. The authors examined IDP awareness and use, the benefits of creating an IDP, and ways to facilitate its use by administering a survey to current or former postdoctoral researchers via the National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) and University of Alabama at Birmingham email lists; individuals belonging to Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology member societies who mentored postdocs; and postdoctoral administrators at member institutions of the Association of American Medical Colleges and the NPA. Although most postdoctoral administrators (>80%) were familiar with IDPs, less than 50% of postdocs and only 20% of mentors were aware of IDPs. For those postdocs and mentors who reported creating an IDP, the process helped postdocs to identify the skills and abilities necessary for career success and facilitated communication between postdocs and their mentors. Despite the fact that creating an IDP benefits postdocs and mentors, IDP use will likely remain low unless institutions and research mentors encourage trainees to engage in this process. 相似文献

The academic workplace, with its requirements for achieving tenure within the first 6 years of employment, is designed in
ways that discriminate against young faculty with family care responsibilities, most notably mothers. Mason and Goulden (Academe, http://www.aaup.org/publications/Academe/2002/02nd/02ndmas.htm, 2002, Academe, http://www.aaup.org/publications/Academe/2004/04nd/04ndmaso.htm, 2004) found that women faculty who have babies within the
first 5 years following the receipt of their doctorate are less likely to earn tenure than women without babies or men in
general. Women at research-intensive universities are twice as likely as their male colleagues to report that they had fewer
children than they wanted. In addition, only one-third of women who begin their academic career at research-intensive institutions
without children will become a mother. These inequities, sometimes called the “baby gap” or “motherhood penalty” make academic
institutions difficult places for new faculty with family care responsibilities. Suggestions are provided to assist new faculty
in successfully combining their work and family roles (e.g., establish gender equity in parenting and negotiate for family-friendly
policies) and to senior faculty and administrators who want to nurture the careers of their younger colleagues (e.g., support

There are numerous academics who have also been novelists, including several prominent writers of children’s literature. Yet
the relationship between academic writing and the writing of fiction has not been systematically explored, nor have the kinds
of knowledge gained from the experience of writing fiction always been easy to incorporate into the scholarly and institutional
contexts of academic criticism. The author discusses some of the ways in which academic and fiction writing can complement
and inform each other, drawing on his own experience in both fields. He also argues that ‘the act of writing’ needs to be
far more thoroughly integrated into English studies at both a practical and a theoretical level.
Charles Butler was a fiction writer before he was an academic, writing his first novel before he went to London University
to study English Literature. He readily admits that his first and second novels remain deservedly unpublished, the influence
of other authors hanging too heavily over them. The Darkling (1997) was the first of his six fantasy novels published to date and, as he relates in this article, he has also written
a number of critical works. As Charles is one of that rare breed of writers who have managed to combine these two careers
(though he has some illustrious precursors, in Tolkien, of course, C.S. Lewis and Ursula Le Guin), we invited him to share
his views on both the rewards and possible pitfalls of trying to keep both activities buoyant.
Charles Butler is a Senior Lecturer at the University of the West of England, Bristol, where he specializes in children’s
literature. He is author of Four British Fantasists: Place and Culture in the Children’s Fantasies of Penelope Lively, Alan Garner, Diana Wynne Jones,
and Susan Cooper (Scarecrow/ChLA, 2006), and editor of Teaching Children’s Fiction (Palgrave Macmillan, 2006). He is also the author of six children’s fantasy novels, of which the most recent are Death of a Ghost (HarperCollins, 2006) and The Lurkers (Usborne, 2006). This study examined the problem of life-style and career patterns for women. College students (367 males, 332 females) expressed their preferences for one of three career patterns for women combining work and family involvement and also answered a work values questionnaire. Results showed that 70.5% of the subjects expected women to attend school and/or work outside the home first and to have their child(ren) only after they have established themselves in a career. Forecasting of career patterns for women was significantly related to subjects' work values. Using a distinction first proposed by Alain Touraine between historic and social movements, Ghanem's review of grassroots initiatives in Brazil argues that, despite differences in composition and aims, movements such as the landless rural workers, indigenous groups, and the women's movement in Brazil have attempted to shift the current socioeconomic order toward a new equilibrium – a process that is, however, not yet complete. In Ghanem's view, these movements are best described as historic movements. Addressing their educational aims, the author finds that they tend to fall into two types: (1) the self-provision of knowledge related to the set of problems that gave rise to their movement in the first place; (2) the striving for access to knowledge that is due to them as citizens and yet not given to them by the state. Often, social movements in Brazil are obliged to offer educational services through their own resources, services which are characterized by precarious conditions and which make the right to quality education still a distant dream. 相似文献
