This article looks at the commentary's role in scientific disputation by analyzing the rhetoric in two scientific papers. First, it considers each author's explanation as to why disagreement exists among scientists. Second, it investigates one author's accusation that “cultural norms” have foreclosed research avenues in evolutionary studies. Third, it examines each author's appeal to values. These values cohere with their explanations as to why disagreements exist and their particular recommendations for administrating the Endangered Species Act.  相似文献

The following statements were originally put forward for discussion at the British Sociological Association Education Study Group meeting on 'Education as Social Control' at the London University Institute of Education, 24 November 2001. They review what in the author's opinion would have been taken for granted during what Michael F.D. Young called 'the brief flowering of intellectual radicalism represented by the rise and fall of the "new sociology of education" ' (introduction to 1998). They apply this understanding to institutionalised learning in England today, along with some explanation of why such an understanding has been lost. The argument thus proceeds through statements of fundamentals to what should not, as John Cleese put it in an episode of Fawlty Towers , require for its comprehension 'an MA in the bleeding blindingly obvious'. It is advanced here in revised form as a similar contribution to debate, the original statements plus the PS remaining emboldened throughout.  相似文献

In higher education the supervision of graduate research students is an uncertain practice. When given the opportunity, supervisors and students ask what it means and how it should be done. In this paper, the author interprets the uncertain state of supervision affairs as an effect of many competing and contradictory social discourses that offer us more ways of making sense of supervision than in the past. Each discourse figures its Loyal Supervisor and Student, its ‘Proper’ Supervision, in particular ways. These are the multiple and contradictory fantasies, fairytales, fictions and fallacies of the title. First each discourse is described and then a close reading is given of some extracts of data from the author's research with Master's students and their supervisors to illustrate various discourses at work. Finally, there is discussion of which discourses are the most powerful at the present time and some implications, both dangers and fruitful possibilities, of the author's interpretation are suggested.  相似文献

Editing includes teaching authors how to write, but the traditional editor's task, like the teacher's, is complicated by the additional requirement of being a gatekeeper of an author's work. When teachers (like editors) see their primary task as judges or gatekeepers, they can become engaged in adversarial relationships that contradict their role as enablers/teachers. The author's editor, on the other hand, is an emerging model of the editor‐author relationship that focuses on helping authors meet the expectations of gatekeeping journal and book editors. Teachers can use the author's‐editor model in the professional writing classroom to minimize the current‐traditional emphasis on the product and emphasize the collaborative nature of the writing process.  相似文献

Universities operate in local, regional, national, and international contexts and need to acknowledge political realities, community expectations, and their own espoused values. This article is written from the perspective of a Vice-Chancellor and looks at the University of New England in Australia as a case study. It is also informed by the author's position as President of the International Association of University Presidents and argues for living our values in a regional and international context.  相似文献

This article is an autoethnography of the author's journey toward the reconciliation of her spirituality with the academy. She depicts the origin of her crisis in the academy, and why the climax of the crisis was critical to her reconciliation. Drawing on Cynthia Dillard's notion of an endarkened feminist epistemology, she identifies the Black Church community as the site where her spirituality is nurtured and recognizes its influence on her reconciliation with the academy. Implications of this study suggest the necessity for researchers to become engaged in public discourse about our spirituality as it relates to education, to continue to invite others to the conversation, and to recognize how the discourse might influence our decisions as researchers/educators.  相似文献

Drawing insights from scholarship in social sciences and education and the author's reflective research accounts, this paper aims to illustrate how a critical cosmopolitan framework can provide an alternative way of looking at educational phenomena. More specifically, the goal is to explore the why, where, who, and how of Critical Cosmopolitan Educational Research.  相似文献

Based on the author's over two decades of association with the World Bank, this paper reviews the institution's policies and practice on education. It describes why education policy, as revealed by operations, shifted dramatically since the early Bank projects on education and identifies the reasons for such a shift. The paper argues that the multi-agency Education for All initiative is unrealistic and unlikely to be reached in this century. Also, the paper discusses the Bank's lack of concrete policies and priorities, especially regarding the trade-off between primary and tertiary education.  相似文献

Japanese scholarship in the field of women's studies has grown markedly in recent years, and accompanying this has been a steady rise in the number of universities and junior colleges offering women's studies-related courses. What we have not seen, however, is much attention to the issue of feminist pedagogy and efforts to explore new ways of teaching the content of women's studies that are consonant with feminist goals and values. This paper underscores the vital need to develop approaches to teaching and learning that challenge many of the values and practices that dominate Japanese education today. Student reactions and responses to the author's attempts to incorporate alternative approaches in the teaching of women's studies courses are examined and analysed in an attempt to understand some of the difficulties entailed in launching such a challenge as well as the potentials for change.  相似文献

This article uses the Comparative Education millennium special issue and the author's recently published five-nation comparative study of primary education to argue the case for a new comparative pedagogy. Pedagogy is defined as both the act of teaching and the discourse in which it is embedded. The comparative analysis of pedagogy requires that we have a viable framework for the empirical study of classroom transactions and that we locate these transactions historically and culturally at the levels of classroom, school and system. The postulated analytical framework maps the key elements in the act of teaching and links them with the processes of curriculum transformation from state to classroom. Comparative pedagogy reveals, alongside each country's unique mix of values, ideas and practices, powerful continuities in these which transcend time and space. In so doing, it helps us to pinpoint those universals in teaching and learning to which, in any context, we need most closely to attend if we are to improve the quality of education.  相似文献

This is a personal account of a college English teacher's continual examination of the sacrifices demanded of his students when they enter writing classes. It is an attempt to encourage students to maintain a critical awareness of the loss of their oral culture and see the limitations of the gain from the literary culture that they immersed themselves in when they began their school career. Literary resources are examined, specifically the writings of Franz Kafka, to illustrate the nature of oral and literate cultures and the demands of each. There is an account of the author's first day at public school as an illustration that helps him to devise teaching methods that acknowledge the validity of students' rebellion against school (literacy) while at the same time developing ways for students to be more accomplished writers.  相似文献

The campaign for scientific literacy has utilized the avenues of children's and young people's literature quite effectively. It should be noted that because such publications are elementary in their conception and literary style, they are attractive to adults with a limited reading ability as well; thus their reading audience extends beyond only young people.20 As discussed previously in the consideration of Little Red Guards, some children's publications have sections devoted to science and scientific knowledge and other publications have scientific themes woven into their situations, but the major purveyor of scientific information in the field of children's literature is the popular science reader, a book devoted completely to scientific material. The contents of such science readers explain natural phenomena, attempt to dispel myths, convey a sense of national scientific self-reliance to the user, and encourage scientific experimentation and inquiry.  相似文献

This commentary addresses some of the ethical considerations that arise when the college consultant attempts to strike a balance between the parsimony of Shakespeare's Cordelia and the "can-do" posture of Pirandello's Guido. Particular emphasis is given to the ethical implications of mandatory psychotherapy. As well, the author's clinical examples are analyzed and alternative approaches to those that were used in the vignettes are recommended.  相似文献

This study explores the relationship between small, differentiated reading groups and fourth-grade students' reading motivation. Using self-study methodology, the author examined her own process of implementing these reading groups through two cycles of action research. Data were analyzed from two different administrations of the Motivations for Reading Questionnaire, as well as from the author's narrative journal entries, written student reflections, small-group and individual interviews, and a critical friend's observations. Findings indicated that small, differentiated reading groups that emphasized social interaction and student choice led to a class culture of reading and promoted students' reading motivation. Students linked their learning in these groups to their written assignments and tended to devalue the group discussions. In addition, implementing the reading groups minimized the author's own performance gap and contributed to greater satisfaction in her own practice. These findings have implications for the design and implementation of differentiated reading groups, as well as for those who support novice teachers.  相似文献

This article examines (1) the elimination of mandatory retirement in American higher education, (2) research related to retirement decisions of university faculty, and (3) the author's thoughts and feelings before and following retirement from academia. An interior monologue, stream-of-consciousness method is used to reflect the author's movement into retirement following 35 years as a university professor. Reminiscence, life review, and a pilgrimage after 50 years to the author's childhood home, are incorporated in relation to the retirement process. The subsequent decision to embrace part-time university teaching is reflected within the interior monologue and in relation to recent retirement research.  相似文献

One concern when teaching a college biology course is how to deal with sex and sexuality. The 'safe' answer is to reduce the topics to anatomy and hormone cycles. However, 'safe' does not meet the needs of students who are or will be sexually active; nor does it adequately serve those who plan to work in athletic training or the health sciences. This article discusses the author's goals for sexuality education within the science classroom: (1) to create a safe and inclusive environment; (2) to fully teach the anatomy and physiology of the reproductive systems; (3) to help the students develop critical thinking skills; and (4) to help the students become aware of how issues of sexuality relate to their chosen fields. The article goes on to discuss the author's experience of teaching sexuality education within a science classroom.  相似文献

This is the last in a series of articles exploring the history of Jewish Education magazine, later known as the Journal of Jewish Education, with a particular emphasis on its intersection with the history of American Jewish education and, more generally, American Jewish life. Major themes and issues that preoccupied the magazine's editors and writers are isolated and analyzed as to how their discourse sheds light on their individual aims, values and philosophical outlooks, as well their collective efforts at educational reform. Particular attention is paid to how Benderly's disciples sought to reinterpret their mentor's vision in a changing American Jewish environment and why this vision was, at best, only partially realized.  相似文献

In this series of articles, I explore the history of Jewish Education magazine with particular emphasis on its intersection with the history of American Jewish education and American Jewish life more generally. I isolate major themes and issues that preoccupied the magazine's editors and writers, and analyze how their discourse sheds light on their individual aims, values, and philosophical outlooks, as well their collective efforts at educational reform. I am particularly interested in elucidating how Benderly's disciples sought to reinterpret their mentor's vision in a changing American Jewish environment and why this vision was at best only partially realized.  相似文献

Literacy coaches are most successful when they: develop strong, trusting relationships; provide clarity about their roles; communicate well; spend much of their time in coaching conversations; and monitor their perspectives about their work and those with whom they work. However, challenges still persist for literacy coaches, particularly in relation to administrators' understanding of literacy coaching, training for literacy coaches, and the amount of time allocated for literacy coaching. This article describes each of these successful practices and each of these challenges, based upon the author's experience over more than 12 years as an international consultant on literacy coaching and supported by research from the literature on coaching, with the goals of summarizing current knowledge, providing practical suggestions for improvement, and encouraging forward movement in the field of coaching.  相似文献
