The purpose of this essay is to study whether the linguistic behaviour of adult women using hedging and tags as indicative of an intrinsically tentative gender identity or of the effects of male dominant position through analyzing daily conversations of the heterosexual couples. The small scale study employs the methodology, namely, recording spontaneous and natural spoken conversation from authentic interaction with the permission of the ten male-female couples.Digital record pen with an omnidirectional microphone are placed in the central living area of each couple’s home. Then discourse analysis provides data making it possible to support Fishman’s claim that women use tag questions and ’you know’ not because women are not being really sure of themselves,or are looking to the addressee for confirmation, but because men in a dominant position often refuse to take responsibility for the smooth conduct of interpersonal relations, women use tag questions and ’you know’ to elicit and maintain conversations.  相似文献

Don’t mention it!"replied the man,"I cannot leave because I am the next speaker."  相似文献

When it conies right down to it, employers considering candidates for a job really only want to know two things: What do you offer in the way of education, experience and skills? What sort of job are you looking for? Do your career goals match the job that's available? One of the best ways to answer these questions is with an objective statement at the beginning of your resume. Simply put, an objective concisely tells prospective employers what you want in a job and what you can bring to an organization. You may have heard that some employers don't want to see an objective on your resume. It's true. But for every hiring manager who says something like this:  相似文献

It is essential for the learners of language to know not only literal meaning of a sentence, but also its illocutionary act. So people can efficiently communicate with each other. This paper uses some examples to illustrate some functions and usage of indirect speech acts.  相似文献

To make a speech more appealing, expressive and persuasive, speaker has to do much work on its syntax, lexis and tropes, and arrange these elements in a more stylistically appropriate way.As for Frederick Douglass’s The Hypocrisy of American Slavery,it is syntactically, lexically, and rhetorically perfect and eloquent. This paper aims to analyze the stylistic features of this speech from the lexical, syntactic and rhetorical perspectives,so as to argue that the deliberately employed stylistic layout of this speech helps Douglass convey his ideas and messages to the audience, and furthermore, enhances the angry tone of him to make the listener understand how adverse and unequal the situation was to the African American people in the 1850’s America.  相似文献

By analysing the nature of inference and discourse comprehension as well as the role and classification of inference, it is concluded that inference is a productive mode of thinking that decides from something known or assumed, and the inference in discourse works out the underlying propositions, necessary or elaborative, and the unsaid speaker’s meaning. To derive a good inference, one has to make use of world knowledge and share some experiences with the speaker.  相似文献

People always find themselves in a rather difficult situation when communicating with others. Quite often a seemingly good intention and caring manner in one’s communication with others cannot guarantee the speaker that initiates the speech is rated as respectful and the communication as satisfying, let alone controlling and arrogant-like speech in a conversation. Patronising communication usually makes people fall into such a dilemma that they find it hard to carry out a successful interaction with other people. Researches in this aspect have been lauched to account for people’s mental states during patronising communication, and Communication Accomodation Theory (CAT) are found to be the best to explain the situation. It is suggested that sensibility, consciousness together with empathy from the speaker and positive reactions such as humorous responses from the listener are the desirable skills in improving the quality of patronising communication.  相似文献

Linguistics is a necessary course for English-majors because it plays an important role in second language learning, teaching and research. It is significant, yet difficult to make this course comprehensible and interesting and get the students involved in and attracted by it. This paper intends to analyze and explore teachers’ roles in the course of linguistics from the following aspects: as an explainer, as an activator, as a co-learner, as a question-finder and as an enabler. Some examples are taken to show how to make use of comparison, contrast, instance, discussion, and practice for classroom management. What’s important for a teacher of linguistics is not only to understand linguistic theories and carry on linguistic research by him- or herself, but also to make his or her students get to know the nature of language and learn to do scientific studies of language by themselves.  相似文献

John Kennedy’s first inaugural address is one of the widely appreciated speeches worldwide. It is famous not only for calling up the American people to well serve the country, but also for its extraordinary linguistic power to arouse the listeners’ emotions, which lies to a great extent in the marvelous employment of the cohesive and coherent devices in the process of its delivery. Cohesion and coherence are two elementary and significant concepts in the theoretical system of discourse analysis. There-fore, they play an important role in the structuring, arrangement, interpretation and analysis of a discourse. In this sense, it is significant to analyze the cohesive and coherent features of John Kennedy’s first inaugural address in order to obtain a penetrating comprehension of the speech in many aspects. A detailed analysis on the cohesive and coherent features of the speech has been conducted in this paper. In the aspect of cohesion in the address, the devices employed fall into two categories: structural cohesion and non-structural cohesion. Structural cohesive devices used in the discourse are mainly grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion like repetition, ellipsis, conjunction, etc. Non-structural methods adopted in the speech are transitivity, mood and modality, thematic progression, parallel structure and so on. In the aspect of coherence, five levels of coherent methods have been employed, namely, lexical level, syntax level, semantic level, phonological level and social semiotic level. The neat intermingling of the cohesive and coherent methods function cooperatively and lead to the smooth going of the text.  相似文献
