Abstract

This article presents an annotated list of career and employment web sites to assist librarians and job seekers with locating information on all aspects of career and job searching. General indexes to career and employment resources are provided, along with sites specializing in career fairs, resume services, relocation and newsgroups. The aim of this paper is to present stable, comprehensive, and well maintained sites that provide resources and services without charge. However, some sites that charge for services, such as resume evaluation and writing, have been included because they also offer links to other sites and information that could be useful to a job searcher.  相似文献

Self-help resume writing books can enable resume writers to make informed decisions concerning appropriate resume content. Librarians who endeavor to meet the career information needs of job seekers have a responsibility to maintain the quality of the resume writing books in library collections. This study utilized the resume content preferences of personnel administrators to explore whether a sample of resume writing books made appropriate resume content recommendations for college graduates seeking entry-level positions. Analysis revealed that the resume books recommended including the resume content items that were preferred by the personnel administrators. However, rather than recommending definite exclusion or inclusion of item personnel administrators referred not to see on resumes, the books tended not to mention these items or made conditional recommendations. The implications of the major research findings are discussed and additional research is recommended.  相似文献

Academia has traditionally faced a substantial gender gap in staff positions and career path progression. Women do not advance up the academic career ladder in the same rate as men, with evidence of gender bias in hiring, earnings, funding, and recognition by means of prestigious awards.In this study we focus on gender differences in funding applications. Multiple factors have been proposed as potentially underlying mechanisms creating differences in funding rates between men and women, including bias in peer review processes and differences in language use. In this study we use a set of 1560 full-text applications in the natural and technical sciences that were subjected to a double-blind review process at a Danish private funder to analyse gendered writing as a potential factor causing differences in funding rates. Reproducing analyses from previous studies that found significant differences in writing styles, we analyse patterns in the use of positive words, levels of readability, concreteness and sentiment. Unlike previous studies, we only find minimal differences in writing style between the sexes. We conclude that writing styles are unlikely to account for skewed funding patterns and suggest ways in which funding programmes can be designed to provide fair opportunities to all applicants.  相似文献

An MLIS program prepares librarians to work in a variety of library environments since the foundations of librarianship offer universal application. Transitioning between different library environments may not be a career option for everyone; however, there are librarians who have worked in multiple library settings. Librarians who participated in a 2016 national survey were provided an opportunity to share their perspectives and experiences about career path mobility. These anonymous responses offer best practices and advice to help decide if a move is right for you and offer tips for a successful transition into a different library environment.  相似文献

The debate concerning the advantages and disadvantages of state vs. local adoption of textbooks has gone on for decades. Until recently, however, there have been no systematic attempts to study this issue—at least not in a way that will yield insights to policymakers and others interested in the manner in which educators evaluate and select textbooks. This article describes recently completed studies that have examined textbook adoption and have the potential to illuminate this debate. The many pros and cons surrounding state vs. local adoption are considered in light of these recent findings. Michael A. Tulley, associate professor of education at Indiana University-Kokomo, has been researching and writing in the area of textbook adoption since the early 1980s. He is a former classroom reading teacher, and also served as a state-level reading consultant with the Indiana Department of Education.  相似文献

This paper traces the career options available to children's. school, or young adulr librarians by talking with a number of individuals who were originally youth librarians but who now hold positions in administration and education. The career patterns of t h e interviewed reveal that the communications and leadership skills common in those librarians who work with young people hold them in good stead when they move to other positions. For many academic librarians, scholarly research is required in order to attain tenure or promotion and it is widely acknowledged that many early career librarians find this process challenging. Using a survey of >200 untenured or recently tenured academic librarians, this study investigates early career academic librarians' access to and experiences with research support activities designed to develop research skills and confidence. Specific attention is paid to informal mentoring, formal mentoring programs, and writing groups. Responses indicate that early career librarians need supports that target three dimensions of the research experience: research design and methods; work practices and accountability; and emotional elements. Despite this, survey respondents had limited access to formal research supports that offer instruction and guidance in the research process, leaving them to rely heavily on informal mentoring. This study highlights the need for libraries and library organizations to invest their resources in research supports for early career academic librarians, helping them to become more effective and confident researchers.  相似文献

Aside from allowing the author to exercise a strong need to be creative, the career of writing also entails a great deal of hard work, frustration, dogged research, revising and rewriting, and waiting to see if what has been created will be accepted or rejected. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between publication rate, top journal publications and excellence during the first eight years of the career, and how well publication rate, top journal publications and highly cited publications during the first four years of the career can predict whether an author attain excellence in the fifth to the eighth year. The dataset consisted of publication track records of 406 early career mathematicians in the sub-field of number theory collected from the MathSciNet database. Logistic regression and dominance analysis was applied to the data. The major conclusions were (1) publication rate had a positive effect on excellence during the first eighth years of the career. However, those who publish many articles in top journals, which implicitly require a high publication count, had an even higher probability of attaining excellence. These results suggest that publishing in top journals is very important in the process of attaining excellence in the early career in addition to publishing many papers; and (2) a dominance analysis indicated that the number of top journal publications and highly cited publications during the first four years of the career were the most important predictors of who will attain excellence in the later career. The results are discussed in relation to indicator development and science policy.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To obtain basic information about non-librarian health professionals who become librarians and information specialists. METHODS: The survey was a Web-based questionnaire. A non-random sample of persons was obtained by posting messages to several large Internet electronic discussion groups. Individuals who met the selection criteria and were willing to participate filled out a Web-based form designed using common gateway interface (CGI) programming. RESULTS: 118 forms were analyzed. Three subgroups of participants were identified and statistical comparisons among these groups were carried out for many of the quantitative questions. Information concerning reasons they left their original field; factors influencing their choice of the field of library and information science; reactions of family, friends, and colleagues; and interactions with patrons and other information about this group was obtained and summarized. A health sciences background was seen as helpful in the new career as information specialist. Most people were happy with their new profession despite negative reactions from colleagues, relatives, and, occasionally, patrons. Feelings of regret and abandonment of their patients were noted by some. Many persons did not know that peers had made similar career changes. CONCLUSIONS: A health sciences background imparts an expertise in both the vocabulary and subject matter of medicine that non-biomedical individuals would not ordinarily have. Although becoming a librarian may be perceived as a very positive career change for an individual, societal opinion and pressure can make such a career change difficult. Nevertheless, participants in this survey demonstrate a high level of satisfaction with their new careers and are quite happy with their work.  相似文献

Learning how to evaluate reading texts should be an important part of preservice training. This study used a simulated textbook selection process to compare differences in the consistency of experimental and control groups in evaluating textbooks. The experimental groups, who were required to define their criteria operationally, were more consistent in their evaluations than the control group, who used traditional checklists. Jacqueline C. Comas is assistant professor of education at the University of Florida in Gainesville where she teaches courses in language arts and children's literature. She is a former classroom teacher, has served as a reading consultant, a reading/language arts supervisor, and has worked with textbook adoption committees for the improvement of instructional materials since the late 1970s.  相似文献

Today's labor market has become increasingly complex. and the average career or job seeker has been left stranded. New information is required at every turn. Libraries are in a position to be a prime player in the delivery of career and job sources and services. Before doing so, however, libraries must have key personnel who: are knowledgeable of labor market and employment trends; develop strong core collections in career and job sources; are well versed in accessing information, including various formats and nontraditional sources; network with other community career/job resources; and market the library's services. In doing so, libraries have the opportunity to provide much of the information required for a career or job search, and in the process can enhance its reputation within the community.  相似文献

Nesta Pain     
The ‘cultural translator’ is an individual who expresses the essence of entanglement in their career choices, moving between genres, media, or nations. This article suggests that the BBC producer and writer, Nesta Pain, was such an individual. Over the course of her career, Pain not only wrote and produced radio features and radio dramas but was also a successful journalist and author. She translated her experience in radio production onto the stage and on television by exploiting the different possibilities offered by these visual media—all evidence of her transmedial cultural translation. Further adding to the transgressive nature of her career, was her place as a woman in male-dominated radio production arenas.  相似文献

When emerging professionals start working in archival institutions, libraries and museums (also referred to as collecting institutions), they bring knowledge and skills gained through internships, formal study, volunteer activities and previous work experience. They learn new processes quickly, are passionate about working with holdings or collections and are keen to build their knowledge. They gain exposure to the different disciplines that are reflected in the roles of archival institutions, libraries and museums as they build their professional identity and consider future career directions. What else do they need? A research study about the experiences of a group of individuals embarking on first or subsequent careers and starting new positions in collecting institutions found that relationships were an essential component in developing their skills and knowledge and planning their future directions. The article would be of interest to students looking ahead to working in an archives, library or museum and exploring career paths; supervisors and mentors who work with emerging professionals; professional associations and communities of practice; and educators who have a role in developing curriculum in educational or workplace contexts.  相似文献

Studies exploring librarians' backgrounds and career motivations frequently focus on all types of librarians or on students seeking degrees in librarianship. Investigating particular subsets of librarians is a field ripe for study. Here, we employed a survey of 193 academic library professionals, who are defined as those employed in professional positions in academic libraries but not possessing a graduate degree in librarianship. We found prior work in an academic library is a substantial motivating factor for entry into the field, as is also the case for traditional academic librarians who choose to attain a graduate degree in library science prior to obtaining a position in the library. The data also suggests that there are two main streams of entry for academic library professionals: those who are hired into functional positions that do not require a graduate degree in librarianship and those who hold paraprofessional titles that have taken on professional-level work. Finally, we found a majority of academic library professionals have no intention of, and do not see the value in, pursuing a graduate degree in librarianship.  相似文献
