高校图书馆读者流失问题分析   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
随着网络的发展,越来越多的读者使用网络搜索引擎作为获取信息服务的入口,许多高校图书馆都面临不同程度的到馆读者减少的问题。通过对高校读者使用信息资源情况的分析,笔者认为目前使用高校图书馆的读者人数并没有明显的减少,图书馆应该更多关注改进信息服务的方式,以适应新环境下读者对信息服务方式的要求。  相似文献

Furthering access to the world's information and reducing information costs are the major goals of Online Computer Library Center, (OCLC) a nonprofit library computer service and research organization based in Dublin, Ohio. OCLC pioneered the computer revolution in libraries in 1971 when it introduced a computer system that enabled libraries to catalog books and order custom-printed catalog cards rapidly and efficiently. Today, OCLC provides a spectrum of services for libraries and their users. OCLC systems in cataloging, interlibrary loan, document delivery, reference, and electronic publishing provide an integrated approach to navigating the sea of knowledge for libraries and their users.  相似文献

Summary

The academic information environment is changing greatly as we enter the millennium. These changes are affecting libraries and, specifically, reference services. In the past and even in recent times librarians have been concerned with library orientation, library instruction, and bibliographic instruction. Now they have to worry about teaching students and others viable information and computer skills to cope effectively in the information society. Reference work as practiced this century will undergo major changes in the electronic information environment, and the teaching of effective information skills will become a very important component of reference services. Abstract

The information age has changed libraries of all types and sizes in ways that no one could have predicted. For a rural library, though, changes have been fast and furious and have made a dramatic impact on the very nature of the library and the services the library offers. Rural libraries went from a gathering place for community activities to fully wired information centers in a matter of a few years. The article addresses what these changes mean for reference services-one of the most basic functions of a public library. While people are consuming more information than ever, will the rural library be able to keep up with this demand even with the Internet? The article explores reference services in rural public libraries, using examples from libraries in central and northern Illinois, giving consideration to the nature of reference services, how they have changed over time, and how this compares to small libraries in a metropolitan setting.  相似文献

This article examines the relationship between bibliographic instruction and reference services. It provides historical definitions for the two services, reviews selected literature that comments on this relationship, and, in turn, considers questions that librarians might ponder as they look at the relationship between reference and instruction in the age of information literacy. The results of a survey distributed to and completed by libraries in the Southeast provide information about how these libraries are making connections between the two services. Controlled vocabulary and subject headings in OPAC records have proven to be useful in improving search results. The authors used a survey to gather information about librarian opinions and professional use of controlled vocabulary. Data from a range of backgrounds and expertise were examined, including academic and public libraries, and technical services as well as public services professionals. Responses overall demonstrated positive opinions of the value of controlled vocabulary, including in reference interactions as well as during bibliographic instruction sessions. Results are also examined based upon factors such as age and type of librarian.  相似文献

The term "information broker," means many things to many people. Broadly speaking, in-house information brokers - within libraries, institutions, private industry - perform information services for fees charged to outside clients or charged back to projects or departments inside the institution itself. Entrepreneurial information brokers are self-employed people or groups of people organized as profit-making businesses. These brokers provide information service for and sell information products to paying customers. Information brokering, in-house and entrepreneurial, calls for professional skills and personal attributes not necessarily brought to play in more traditional library occupations.  相似文献

This arlicle describes the general situation of information services in rural public libraries in the context of the changing nature of rural America. The limitations and barriers faced by rural libraries and residents in obtaining the information they need and want are examined. Examples are presented of libraries which are taking advantage of new information technology and developing new concepts of networking to provide information services to rural residents. An increasing number of students are studying abroad requiring that they interact with information in languages other than their mother tongue. The UK in particular has seen a large growth in international students within Higher Education. These nonnative English speaking students present a distinct user group for university information services, such as university libraries. This article presents the findings from an in-depth study to understand differences between the search processes of home and international students. Data were collected using an online survey and diary-interview to capture thoughts and feelings in a more naturalistic way. International students are found to have similar information search processes to those of home students, but sometimes face additional difficulties in assessing search results such as confusion when dealing with differing cultural perspectives. The potential implications for information service providers, particularly university libraries, are discussed, such as providing assistance to students for identifying appropriate English sources.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of a survey undertaken by the World Health Organization of health sciences libraries in Southeast Asia. It includes information on clientele, budget, personnel, collections, lending policy, dissemination of information, and reference services. The survey indicates that the collections in most of the health sciences libraries in Southeast Asia are deficient and that services provided to readers are inadequate. Computerization of library services is intended to modernize the entire library system in Nigeria as in the industrialized countries, and to ensure accuracy, efficiency, effective information management, reliable user services, enhanced interlibrary co-operation and library prestige. By 1985, only the library of the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, had succeeded in automating its library services. Other libraries are mostly at the trial stage. University and research libraries and the National Library of Nigeria are leading the race to computerize their services. Lack of co-operation between libraries is an obstacle to library automation in Nigeria. Some librarians are not sure whether computerized library services would thrive owing to problems of poor funding, inadequate physical and environmental facilities such as low grade buildings, unreliable power supply and the scanty amount of information holdings in most of our libraries. Staff computer training, standby power generating plants, competent personnel, computer technicians and support for computer acquisition and hardware maintenance are major factors to consider before any Nigerian library decides to automate its services. In future, use of natural language by computers will make computers more user friendly. Installation of mini- or microcomputers, with powerful information storage capacity, rather than main frames are recommended for small Nigerian libraries with fewer than 20000 book titles, but which wish to automate their services.  相似文献

[目的/意义]调查和分析澳大利亚公共图书馆政府信息服务所取得的良好成效并加以学习借鉴,对我国公共图书馆提高政府信息服务水平具有重要意义。[方法/过程]在文献分析的基础上,通过网络调查法探究澳大利亚公共图书馆开展政府信息服务的情况,介绍LA、LDS、PANDORA和AGLS 4个主要的服务项目,分析图书馆网站在政府信息导航、信息整合与参考咨询方面的服务。[结果/结论]澳大利亚公共图书馆政府信息服务具有历史悠久,以公众需求为出发点,与政府部门开展合作,服务方式多样的特点,其成功经验可为我国公共图书馆开展政府信息服务提供借鉴。  相似文献

Abstract

As the Government Printing Office completes its transition to an electronic distribution system for government information, reference services within the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) are changing as well. In addition to meeting new user needs and using new resources to do so, many government information librarians find themselves working in new environments within their libraries. Throughout the 1990s, many FDLP institutions reorganized reference services in order to provide government information assistance at the library's main reference service point. This article reports the results of a survey of FDLP institutions identifying the factors contributing to the reorganization of services, the process and success of reorganizing within these libraries, and the pros and cons of these service arrangements.  相似文献
