Abstract

This ease study describes the Lise of an information technology vendor conference to assure the smooth opening of the remodeled Central Library of the Multnomah County (Portland. Oregon) Lihrary. Collaborative meetings with vendors provided the opportunity tor hardware, telecommunications, integrated library system, and network vendors to meet with library staff to troubleshoot problems, share information, und anticipate situations. The meetings also provided library administration with the opportunity to underscore the importance of the opening. The article discusses the elements necessary to make this approach a success and reports on events before, during, and after the opening of the new facility.  相似文献

An important aspect of the lifecycle of electronic resources is disseminating the arrival of new resources on campus and reminding the campus of currently subscribed materials. A database page accessible by subject, topic or format, training sessions by vendors, either live or via the Web, information literacy presentations for one-shot classes or workshops for the entire campus are standard marketing strategies; however, even with clear and comprehensive presentations demonstrating awareness of the strengths and limitations of subscribed resources, if only a handful of the 15,000+ users show up, the program may appear to be an exercise in futility. Another route to disseminate this important information is the library expo or vendor fair. Vendors set up booths for three to five hours to meet with users. They provide booth giveaways and help with door prizes to attract students, faculty, and administrators to the fair. Users can spare a short time to browse the booths between classes and meetings to learn about new resources and ask questions about their old favorites. This article will provide insights in the planning, marketing, and assessment of the library expo held at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.  相似文献

Historically, libraries have purchased most of their books from wholesalers catering to the library market. In the past five years, new web booksellers have entered the marketing offering deep discounts and rapid delivery to the general public. Purchasing from web vendors tends to increase library administrative costs because of institutional credit card and auditing policies, double data entry on the web vendor’s interface and local library system, and other factors. Depending on local administrative costs, libraries may find web vendors the best choice for purchasing OP, foreign and rush titles.  相似文献

With the wide variety of vendor services available, discount or other traditional factors may no longer play a predominant role in determining an academic library’s vendor selection. A questionnaire was sent to 291 academic librarians to survey their vendor selection criteria and methods. Using preliminary results from the survey, this paper examines the mix of vendors’ traditional services vs. new services that now enter into the selection decision. Further, it considers differences in practice based upon library budget size. These initial results indicate that the traditional areas of corporate reputation, approval plan management, and acquisitions services consistently receive the highest ratings of importance. The areas covering outsourcing and electronic data transmission are rated higher by those libraries using these services. As more libraries seek these services from their approval vendors, the services will likely increase in importance in librarians’ decision-making processes.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The management of electronic resources is one of the most challenging issues facing academic libraries today. Integrated library systems are often unable to manage these resources using existing architecture, but many vendors and individuals are developing systems as either stand-alone or components of their integrated library systems. This paper outlines the investigation, evaluation and implementation process of one library that served as a beta test library with an integrated library system vendor to develop an electronic resource management system. Vendor records are one of the key components underpinning the acquisitions record in the integrated library system. Acquisitions and collection development practitioners increasingly need to record, access, and manipulate acquisitions vendor metadata for purposes not foreseen by the architects of current generation ILSs. The authors posit that vendor records can serve as an appropriate metaphor for the entire acquisitions record in the development of standards. The analysis of data elements and proposed grouping into fields, records, and metarecords suggests a direction for further development and enhanced functionality. The authors call on librarians, systems vendors, and materials vendors to engage in a dialog aimed at creating an accepted standard for vendor records that will meet the needs of all parties.  相似文献

The decision-making process in any environment, including the library, is potentially subjective and arbitrary. The impetus for this research has been to eliminate the discretionary component in vendor selection by designing a quantitative decision-making model. Technically, the model is based on the artificial intelligence concept known as an expert system. The model uses rules provided by the expert, policies of the individual institution, and quantitative decision techniques to assign orders to vendors. Advantages to this knowledge-based model are the following: (1) assurance of quantitative objectivity; (2) efficient allocation of limited resources; (3) improved use of personnel time; (4) creation of a database of vendor price structuring; and (5) usefulness as a training resource.  相似文献

While privacy is a core value of librarianship, privacy standards differ by library and library vendor. These types of guidelines are necessary and useful, but understanding them can be overwhelming. Academic libraries increasingly rely on third-party, cloudbased vendors to manage their systems and to provide access to their collections. When selecting library systems, library staff must understand privacy issues and be aware of how vendors use data. However, libraries do not always have the staffing, time or knowledge, and vendors are not always interested in upholding library values. The project examines the content of privacy policies for popular library systems used by Canadian academic libraries. The research aims to help librarians better understand the policies, to help them make informed decisions about their own library systems. The process used to code the privacy policies and the results of the coding are included alongside recommendations for vendors and library employees. Building on two seminal privacy studies, the methodology is revised for a Canadian context and updated with today's terminology and context, making it adaptable for other libraries and context around the world.  相似文献

An increasing number of users are reaching out to their academic library from their mobile devices to search for scholarly content. As a result, the resources offered through the library Web site should be equally accessible on all devices. Database content is a critical library resource, and vendor products must evolve to function effectively on all types of devices. This study examined 197 databases at Adelphi University Libraries to determine if they are universally accessible either through the provision of an app or a mobile-optimized Web site. The study concluded that the majority of vendor platforms are not optimized for viewing across smart devices. These findings indicate that libraries should encourage vendors to offer mobile-optimized databases, and desktop computers may still be necessary for database searching.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article illustrates the collaboration of three entities- the library, its online system and the authority service vendor-to achieve online authority control in a medium-sized academic library efficiently and cost-effectively. The authority service vendor checks and revises (as needed) the headings of the library's new bibliographic records, providing new authority records for them. Through a separate notification service, the vendor also provides revised authority records for the existing authority file, alerting the library when in-house online maintenance is needed. In this online environment, authority records and bibliographic records are maintained automatically by the vendor authority service. Thus, using various authority heading reports which can be generated by the local online system in conjunction with the notification service, the library concentrates its authority work on the elimination or correction of obsolete headings. The authority vendor services are effective and reduce the cost of maintaining the online catalog. Ultimately, accurate standardized headings enhance the ease and effectiveness of online searching and retrieval for all who consult the library's catalog.  相似文献

A regional study conducted by 16 libraries sought to develop a vendor evaluation instrument for acquisitions and collection development librarians to establish acceptable ranges of vendor performance in the North Texas area. Criteria studied included fulfillment, turnaround time, discount, shipping charges, number of reports, cancellations by vendors and problems with vendors. One hundred items were ordered by each library between September 18 and October 13 with the study ending on December 15, 1989. Orders were submitted both electronically and by mail to seven domestic vendors. Fulfillment ranged from 56% to 99%; average turnaround time was 42 days for mailed orders versus 36 days for electronically transmitted orders; and average discount was 4.4% for all orders, ranging from 4.2% to 20.3%. Results provided the participants with data against which they could compare their own vendor's performance.  相似文献

The past decade has brought many changes in the relationships between librarians and vendors and in the ethics between them. Foremost among these changes have been the advances in library technology and automation. In the past, the symbiotic relationship between librarians and vendors was relatively simple. Librarians wanted a vendor who could supply library materials efficiently, accurately, and with a good discount. The vendor was expected to be knowledgeable about library trends and needs and to be the party with the business savvy and sophistication to work with publishers. Now, not only do librarians expect vendors to supply materials efficiently and accurately, they also expect technological sophistication in the providing of these materials, automated systems, and service for the systems. This is especially true for the acquisition of serial publications and the needs of automated services such as check-in, claiming, ordering, and invoicing. Librarians now want more than just materials at a reasonable price. They want automated systems and databases for acquiring materials, managing budgets, and servicing collections. This paper will review the historical relationship of the ethics between vendors and librarians. It will explore the information and automation society and how the decline of business ethics in the eighties changed this relationship.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

At a time in our economy when library budgets are strained and staffing is under the microscope, librarians need to reassess and retool their library services for online students to provide quality, depth, and community without causing meltdown. The authors analyze some of the retooling undergone at their library to meet the shifting demographics of students who in 10 years have grown from 1,000 online students to 14,500 and increased to 65% of the students now taking online classes. To meet this challenge, the library centralized library services by closing the regional Library Information Centers and established a Multimedia Department focused on developing tutorials and online training materials, established an outreach librarian position, and worked with reference and instruction librarians to expand their roles as liaisons to the various academic programs. The library is learning to work smarter, not necessarily harder, and much leaner.  相似文献
