ABSTRACTIn an era of rural service decline and population aging, some rural libraries rely on volunteers to keep them open within the community. This paper outlines the challenges of sustaining such volunteer-based rural libraries, drawing on a case study of a volunteer-based library in rural Ontario, Canada. Findings suggest that age of volunteers, volunteer participation, territoriality, branch polarization and the burden of volunteering present challenges in sustaining the volunteer program at the library, yet the library contributes to the community through community engagement, enabling aging in place and through economic development. The paper concludes with recommendations from the case study on how the sustain such a volunteer program. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThe author presents the results of a review and analysis of thirty-five colleges and universities in the United States that currently offer an Associate's degree and/or vocational certificate(s) in Library and Information Science. These programs, which are geared primarily to existing library support staff who seek additional training, have been created independently of each other and without a national standard to guide the curriculum. Although the American Library Association-Allied Professional Association's Library Support Staff Certification offers guidelines for the educational content of Associate's level LIS programs, a comparison reveals significant gaps. Furthermore, the ALA-APA program currently approves courses at only three institutions in the nation, and certifies graduates from only fourteen. The author identifies areas of misalignment between the Library Support Staff Certification and existing LIS programs and suggests directions for future improvement.Column Editor’s Note Community college libraries are deeply underrepresented in the professional literature and organizations of academic librarianship. As a result, the challenges and successes that take place in the community college world are largely invisible to others. This JLA column lifts the curtain to reveal the uniqueness of community college libraries as described by their most passionate advocates: the librarians who work there. [目的/意义]探讨移动互联网环境下，如何通过对阅读推广品牌化运作及对阅读品牌社群的教育、引导实现高校图书馆价值，试图为我国高校图书馆阅读品牌创建提供借鉴与参考。[方法/过程]以湘潭大学图书馆话剧《北鸢》排演为例，就读者参与阅读品牌创建的过程、特征、经验等品牌运营要素进行分析。[结果/结论]高校图书馆阅读品牌创建，首先需要发挥阅读品牌社群的作用，进一步强化阅读推广的品牌化运作，让读者社群成为图书馆品牌的创建者。其次需要强化馆员管理意识，从品牌的设计管理、品牌定位、品牌传播、系统维系等方面进行教育、引导，从而实现我国高校图书馆阅读推广层次与水平的提升。高校图书馆阅读品牌创建是基于营销思维下，将公共文化服务按经营管理理念开展的创新服务。在读者参与阅读品牌创建的过程中需要合理审视，由专业馆员与网络技术人员协作，发挥数字社群的作用，利用阅读社群的口碑传播功能实现品牌创建。 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis study explores how two nonprofit media organizations–PublicSource and Philadelphia Community Access Media (PhillyCAM)–have transformed their legacy practices to better connect within and serve marginalized populations in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, PA. As traditional newsrooms have been depleted by dire financial realities, new journalism outcroppings have heeded the Knight Commission’s Informing Communities: Sustaining Democracy in the Digital Age (2009) report and, consequently, revised their approaches to community engagement. Adjacent to these reformed legacy newsrooms are community media organizations that operate a municipality’s public, educational, or government (PEG) access media production facilities. Although PEG access media’s legacy has no clear genealogical ties with traditional journalism, an increasing amount of PEG operations over the past ten years have started to intentionally test editorialized forms of community news reporting. The data collected and assessed in this study has indicated that news organizations like PublicSource have an explicit need to do more relational community engagement work that will enable it to fill hyperlocal information gaps and better serve marginalized populations. Community media organizations like PhillyCAM have extensive experience engaging diverse publics; however, as this study reveals, they could benefit from employing formalized news production methods that are guided by journalistic standards. 相似文献

Arts and Humanities Team librarians collaborated with other University units and community organizations, adapted programming models from enterprise settings and non-academic libraries, and used multi-media technologies to deliver a variety of events over one calendar year. Summary Reference service as we have come to know it first began over 100 years ago. At that time, its proponents called for librarians to assist readers by providing instruction in the use of the library, answering readers' questions, aiding readers in the selection of good books, and publicizing the library within the community. Since that time, we have seen many changes in the size, complexity, relationships, and technologies used in our libraries. However, despite the introduction of a wide array of new concepts, services, and access methods, the role of the reference librarian remains essentially unchanged. This article highlights the commonalities of reference service from its inception to the current day and suggests that we must retain those principles when looking at rethinking or redesigning reference services. 相似文献

The Association of College &; Research Libraries’ efforts to update and revise the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education (2000) have opened extensive dialogue not only about the content of the new standards, but about the very nature of the document. Its proposed replacement, The Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education (2014) took a more theoretical path to describing what an information literature individual understands and how they behave. One common objection to the Framework, however, is that it is too advanced to be applicable in the undergraduate environment, and particularly in community colleges. In this essay, a community college library director takes a critical approach to the Framework to assess its relevance to the two-year college curriculum, grounding the discussion by mapping Knowledge Practices to Performance Indicators in the original Standards. The author recommends that community college librarians take an à la carte approach and integrate relevant elements of the Framework where they are useful without trying to address the entire document. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This article explores the concept of service branding in the context of libraries and information organizations. We discuss community perceptions of library brand value from the librarian's perspectives in the context of public and academic libraries. Librarians’ thoughts and viewpoints in improving the community's library experience are also discussed. We explore the role that devices currently play in children’s book reading, finding that while children have relatively high access to devices with eReading capability, these devices are underutilised for reading purposes. While ownership of devices was negatively associated with reading frequency for both genders, its negative impact was more significant for girls than boys. We also found that when boys and girls identified themselves as daily readers, and where they had access to devices, they did not use them frequently for book reading, suggesting that paper book reading is still preferable for frequent book readers of both genders. 相似文献
