Alternatively, some authors mourn the death of print and are convinced that paper products and the greatness of civilization are linked. Reality lies somewhere between these poles. In this session Vicky Reich outlines the current state of electronic publishing at High Wire Press. Daniel Jones discusses integrating an online journal program into a full suite of library services. Abstract Governmental, non-profit, and commercial organizations are putting a variety of materials online which provide access to information previously published in print, or on stand-alone fee-based databases. Although it is still difficult to locate information efficiently on the Internet, access to relevant materials has been improved by subject-organized online indexes of resources. These indexes take some of the chaos out of locating relevant materials. Rapid growth in online in electronic publishing combined with access to resources via organized indexes to online information make the Internet useful to reference librarians and educators. Abstract Jacksonville State University's (JSU) Houston Cole Library (HCL) has always provided access to required course readings for its nursing program. In the past, HCL only offered print reserves. Now, as JSU's nursing programs move to the online arena, the Library's presence will be needed even more. Along with providing access to required course readings via an electronic reserve system, Docutek's ERes, the move to an online environment will require assistance in navigating the online system. Through a survey instrument, the authors determined the percentage of the JSU nursing faculty currently using the electronic reserve system. The authors also surveyed the JSU nursing students to determine the impact of the system on their studies. 相似文献

Abstract For most research libraries, remote storage of significant portions of their print collections has become an economic necessity. Historically, user objections to remote storage have focused on access-related issues: i.e., lack of browsability, cumbersome requesting procedures, lengthy retrieval times, and lack of content information about materials held in storage locations. Research libraries today operate in an environment of high user expectations for convenience and immediacy in getting information, and for accessing that information remotely. In an environment filled with such expectations, print materials with no alternate electronic format, stored in off-site facilities, and inadequately described in online catalogs are less likely to get even the occasional usage they merit. Given the necessity of remote storage, research libraries need to address the issue of making stored print collections more accessible. This paper discusses three strategies for enhancing access to remotely stored library collections: (1) user-focused access policies; (2) enhanced OPAC displays; and (3) new technologies for retrieval and delivery. 相似文献

However, many devices and services are available to aid patrons who can not use print in the conventional manner. This paper provides an overview of typical assistive technology devices and services available to students with print disabilities. Barriers to access and solutions to these barriers are also discussed. ABSTRACT The Arizona State University Libraries Electronic Reserve system provides ASU students easy online access to required course reading. Journal articles, tests, syllabi and class notes are digitized and available on any computer with Internet access. Students no longer need to make a trip to the library but can now read, download or print these items at their convenience. The documents are easily located through a direct link in the libraries' online catalog and retrievable with “two clicks of a mouse.” This system was designed by the staff of the university's library. While outside vendors offered programs ranging in price from $47,000 to $70,000, less than $400 was spent on software. With over 750 files for 169 courses digitized, electronic reserve is popular, averaging 11,000 “hits” a month. 相似文献
