Abstract

A series of corroded stone specimens from Salzburg monuments was examined by electron-probe microanalysis. The crusts arose from environmental effects, in the case of marble primarily from SO2. Deterioration phenomena can be correlated with stone surface features.  相似文献

Abstract

Marble specimens were impregnated with epoxy resins by first soaking the specimens in a solvent and then treating them, in steps, with increasing concentrations of the resin in the resin-solvent mixture. This resulted in impregnation to several centimeters’ depth into the specimen. Both impregnated and non-impregnated specimens were subjected to 3000 ppm SO2 atmospheres in a dynamic system. X-ray diffraction and fluorescence studies to determine the deterioration quantitatively, revealed that transformation of the outer layer of non-impregnated marble into primarily calcium sulfite stopped after a maximum of 15 mole percent conversion under normal conditions of humidity. While certain impregnated marble specimens showed significant protection from SO2 attack, other impregnated specimens revealed more reactivity than the controls. A partial explanation of this has been obtained by scanning electron microscopy which showed that the resin films on the surface were perforated. Coatings of certain acrylics provided some additional protection to impregnated specimens.  相似文献

Abstract

A broth containing the sulfate reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio desulfuricans was used to treat samples of reagent calcium sulfate, gypsum-rock specimens, fragments from a marble monument with a black weathering crust rich in gypsum, and a marble monument with similar crust. Calcite was found to have formed on all treated surfaces suggesting that this microbe has the potential to clean crusted marble monuments whilst also regenerating calcite, the parent mineral of the marble.  相似文献

Abstract

This work combines our observation that the details of marble statues that have already been lost from the calcite surface are preserved in the gypsum layer, with our research on the mechanism of marble sulfation, to lead to a consolidation of the gypsum, transforming it back to calcium carbonate (calcite) using carbonate ions in solution. Our research shows the mechanism of the conversion of gypsum to calcite, the rate determining steps being the desorption and diffusion of CO2?3 We found that the reproduction of the surface detail and the improvement of the mechanical properties was very satisfactory.  相似文献

Abstract

The restoration of two early eighteenth-century marble statues by Antonio Corradini is described. Methylene chloride was used to remove plant stains. Sepiolite (magnesium silicate) and water drew out the dirt, and thick incrustations were removed with an ultrasonic dental tool. Incorrectly restored parts were remodelled according to contemporary prints, not in marble but using a casting procedure.  相似文献

Unvarnished twentieth-century oil paintings are often sensitive to aqueous swabbing, a method routinely employed by conservators for surface cleaning. This study proposes a connection between sensitivity and the presence of magnesium sulphate heptahydrate which has been identified on the surface of some of water-sensitive paintings. The probable source of magnesium is magnesium carbonate, an additive in some twentieth-century oil paints, which has reacted with atmospheric sulphur dioxide (SO2). Films made using modern manufactured paints and formulations made in the laboratory were exposed to gaseous SO2 and raised relative humidity and examined using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction to characterize the crystalline entities. Films containing magnesium carbonate formed magnesium sulphite and sulphate hydrates. Films containing zinc oxide were also investigated. These formed zinc and sulphur containing salts. Sensitivity to swabbing with water before and after exposure was evaluated. Films that developed salts, demonstrated increased sensitivity to aqueous swabbing after exposure to SO2. Findings suggest that increased water sensitivity may be due to a combination of the formation of hygroscopic degradation products and to weakening of the paint film due to salt-induced disruption of the surface.  相似文献

Abstract

Sulphuration is the main destroyer of marble, producing imaginary (not true) patina. Other reasons for the discoloration of marbles are discussed. Magnesium silicate saturated with de-ionized water is a safe and simple cleaner. Sintolite is advocated as an adhesive for marble rather than the general more fluid epoxy resins. Solid polyvinyl acetate is strongly advocated as the basis for sma1l repairs to internaIly housed marble. The consolidation of marble is discussed and a method for internal exhibits recommended. Conservation of unbaked clay is touched upon, and a method for the repair of terracotta suggested together with a process for the reproduction of a glazed frieze using a latex mould and epoxy-reinforced plaster casts. A few remarks are made concerning the dangers of cleaning alabaster with water. The commentary is of a general nature and is not intended as a strict blueprint for any particular object.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Currently, there is a lack of research on the migration and distribution of soluble salt solutions in the pores of fragile silicate cultural relics, especially the thermodynamic changes during crystallization, and the forces causing the destruction of cultural relics. Thus, this paper used infrared thermal imaging analysis and extended depth-of-field microscopy to observe the changes in temperature, morphology, migration, and crystallization rate of Na2SO4 solution – the most typical solution that causes damages to cultural relics – in the crystallization process and in different capillary pores. The results show that the formation of soluble salt crystal nuclei and subsequent crystal growth mainly occurred in the liquid phase region below the ambient temperature, and then the salt crystals in the deliquescent state became more compact due to the attractive force generated from liquid-phase water evaporation. Additionally, three stages of migration and crystallization of the salt solution in different capillary pores were found. Large-area crystals appeared in the capillary pore with a large diameter, and bubbles were generated. This is likely because the surface tension of the Na2SO4 solution decreased with increasing concentration, and the solubility of the air dissolved at the solid–liquid interface of the mouth of the capillary pore and the pressure in the capillary pore decreased. A self-designed double-layer contact surface internal pressure method and extended depth-of-field microscopy were used to carry out real-time online observation of the force applied on the contact surface during the crystallization of the salt solution. It was found that the airflow determined the direction of capillary movement of the solution, and water migration determined the laminar flow in the capillary pore. Salt crystallization played a role in distortion and shape-fixation of pores. Small spikes in the mass indicated that the expansion–contraction force generated by the salt solution during the crystallization process was in a state of constant change, and the degree of expansion was always slightly more significant than the change caused by contraction. Expansion forces dominated the surface of the sample. In this paper, the change in crystallization and the forces of the soluble salt solution were analyzed.  相似文献

Abstract

The winter climatic conditions of much of Canada provide an ideal environment for freeze-drying. We have been attempting to use these conditions for the drying of large waterlogged timbers. In the freeze-drying process the wood is kept in a frozen state and the drying proceeds by sublimation. We are particularly concerned with the treatment of large timber which present great difficulties when treated by the accepted methods. A structure was built to keep snow and rain off the wood but which allowed air to pass over it. The structure was covered with polyethylene sheet to allow the sun to shine on the wood surface and heat it. Weight changes in the wood were measured with a load transducer and temperature wa followed with thermocouple probes. Temperature and relative humidity of the surrounding air were recorded instrumentally. The timbers were of several varieties of wood in various states of decomposition. All of the wood dried quickly and much of the water was removed. This technique appears to have the potential to treat large quantities of timber in an economic and simple way.  相似文献

A technical study was conducted on a group of copper alloy artifacts excavated from the burial tumulus of Lofkënd (fourteenth–ninth century BCE) to identify the alloy compositions and methods of manufacture. The surface corrosion was also examined in order to understand the diagenetic processes affecting the preservation of the finds and their condition. Portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, metallographic examination, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis were used to characterize the alloy composition and identify the corrosion products present. XRD analysis showed the presence of brochantite (Cu4SO4(OH)6) on five of the metallic artifacts. Brochantite is not commonly reported on archaeological bronzes from terrestrial sites, but is more readily found on copper alloy objects exposed to sulfur pollutants in the air or soil. The possible conditions that could have led to the formation of this corrosion on the bronzes from Lofkënd are discussed in the context of the particular burial environment found at the tumulus.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang, China, the ambient relative humidity (RH) fluctuation in the caves is the main cause for the deterioration that has been observed, especially the deterioration of the earthen plaster and wall paintings linked to the presence of NaCl and Na2SO4 salt contaminants. To help identify the mechanism responsible for this salt-related deterioration and provide a theoretical basis for the development of a preventive conservation regime, this study addressed the basic moisture adsorption mechanisms of earthen plaster with soluble salts by taking an experimental approach. It is shown that, as ambient RH increases, the moisture adsorption process of the plaster containing the soluble salts can be regarded to have three basic stages, as evidenced by the results of the moisture adsorption tests performed on earthen plaster samples with different NaCl or Na2SO4 contents at various humidity levels. The moisture adsorption mechanism and its determining factors at each stage are also analysed. In addition, it is suggested that the hygroscopicity of the plaster structure and the interaction between the different kinds of salts in the plaster, which makes the dissolution or hydration of the salt in the plaster pores much easier, should be considered more seriously regarding increases in the ambient RH in the caves.  相似文献

Abstract

The paper discusses the methodology adopted for and the results derived from a pilot project to conserve the lead and lead alloy communion tokens in the collections of St Andrews University. For the project a new conservation process, ‘potentiostatic reduction’, was developed, involving reduction of the tokens at ?1·2V vs. SCE (saturated calomel electrode) in 0·5M H2SO4, The aim of the pilot project was to test the effectiveness of the new process in tackling a largescale conservation problem by observing its effects on a wide range of tokens made of various alloys and suffering from varying degrees of corrosion. The results of the pilot project indicated that potentiostatic reduction is as effective as standard electrolytic reduction. Since the new technique greatly reduces the time required for the conservation of individual artifacts, there are substantial savings in conservation costs.  相似文献

Abstract

In preparation for a major exhibition at the National Gallery of Scotland in 2005, a thorough technical examination of VISION OF THE SERMON by Paul Gauguin was undertaken for the first time since the painting's acquisition in 1925. An inter-disciplinary approach to the research was adopted in an attempt to assess how innovative were the materials and techniques employed by Gauguin in this iconic work. The importance of the unique customs and religious piety of Brittany in 1888 to the iconography of Vision is discussed, as well as the various ways in which the original appearance of the painting has altered over time. Changes have occurred through both the natural ageing of materials and as a result of human intervention, particularly an aqueous lining and reframing. Analysis suggests that the paint medium consists of several different drying oils, confounding years of speculation that it may contain wax. The discovery that the original surface coating contains beeswax and tallow has grave implications for the feasibility of future conservation treatments. Following Gauguin's accusation of plagiarism by Emile Bernard, a tentative comparison is made between Vision and the latter's Breton Women in the Meadow. This reveals that while compositional similarities exist, Vision is far more complex, both in conception and execution.  相似文献

Abstract

Black weathering layers on stone often contain iron. This is particularly true for the Turonian sandstones which were used extensively in architecture and sculpture in Saxony. In order to obtain more knowledge about the oxidic iron phases, samples were collected in the city of Dresden. Mineralogical and analytical characterization was provided for the black layers and the supporting stone. Material originating from Cotta and Posta stone was submitted to Mössbauer spectroscopy. After ample comparisons of Mössbauer parameters and evaluation of infrared spectra it was concluded that the predominant neogenic iron phase is not iron(III) oxide hydrite (ferrihydrite) Fe2O3·1·8H2O or jarosite KFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 or goethite α-FeO(OH) but a defectively ordered precursor of this last compound, characterized by different environments of the iron(III) ions. By the reducing action of organic matter, magnetite Fe4O4 is formed and this contains up to 45% of the iron present in a black layer.  相似文献

Abstract

Naturally occurring pigments used by Aborigines in rock paintings have been collected in Western Australia. They area red pigment (mainly hematite, Fe2O3)(from a red ochre mine worked until historic times by Aborigines, and a white pigment (huntite, Mg3Ca(CO3)4) which is still collected and used by Aborigines. Samples were also taken from rock paintings in which these pigments were used or were thought to have been used. The pigment samples were analysed to establish chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties. The paint samples were examined microscopically and with an electron probe to study their relationship with the rock surface and with other paint layers. The relationship between the pigments’ properties and their durability is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Mineralogical changes which occur during the reaction of copper(II) chloride with carbonate in aqueous solution have been investigated, and compared with those involving copper(I) chloride, nantokite, CuCI, and copper artifacts coated with malachite, CU2CO3(OH)2 The reactions observed and the products obtained are seen to have implications with respect to the use of aqueous sodium carbonate solutions to stabilize archaeological copper objects. The frequent observation of the mineralogically rare species chalconatronite, Na2Cu(CO3)2·3H2O, on the surface of treated objects is readily explained by known reaction chemistry. Its formation can be minimized by washing the object after treatment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Chalconatronite, Na2[Cu(CO3)]2·3H2O, is formed as a corrosion product when copper alloys are exposed to sodium carbonate solutions in the air. This also happens when metals come into contact with corroding soda glass which forms alkaline surface films in reaction with humidity from clean air. More often, substantial amounts of formaldehyde are present indoors which react to formate via the Cannizzarro reaction and accumulate over time in the films. Twenty cases of chalconatronite (including two mentioned in the literature) are reported as occurring on heritage objects with glass in contact with copper alloys: Baroque reliquaries with set glass gems, enamel on metal (sixteenth century and a modern replica of intentionally unstable composition), Christmas tree glass baubles with wires, glass buttons with metal shanks, a glass figure with a wire support, miners’ lamps, and a glass framed daguerreotype. These confirmed identifications might help conservators in investigating similar cases to shed more light on the formation conditions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We analyzed 53 historical textile samples from a collection of caftans and brocades dating between the sixteenth and nineteenth century in the Topkapi Palace Museum (TPM) by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). Data were collected on the type, dimensions, elemental composition, and level of corrosion. The technique is presented in this work as an efficient and micro-destructive tool for the characterization of the structure of historical metal threads. SEM-EDX analysis for different energies was performed on a selection of gold and silver threads belonging to the historical textiles. The results were interpreted via laboratory prepared samples of gilt Ag and sulfur reacted Ag at different thicknesses for Au and Ag2S layers respectively. A series of Au–Ag alloys for different Au/Ag ratios were prepared for comparative analysis. The threads were made of metal strips wound around a silk core. Metal wires and flat strips were also used. The use of differential energies allowed for differentiating strips and wires made of homogeneous silver and gold alloys from the ones coated with a thin gold layer. Analysis of EDX data revealed that the Au film thickness was very thin (10–60?nm). Formation of Ag2S layers over the thin Au film as thick as 1.5?µm was taking place. Formation of thinner Ag2S layers over non-gilt Ag suggested different reaction mechanisms for gilt and non-gilt cases.  相似文献
