The novel Sons and Lovers, which is Lawrence’s best acclaimed work, is of autobiographic air. It is called the best representation of Sigmund Freud’s "Oedipus Complex"theory by critics, though Lawrence denied having read Freud before writing the novel. However, it can shed new light on the novel when read in a different point of view. Paul’s road to become a real man can not be separated from his mother, Miriam and Clara, who is Paul’s first and second loves respectively. This article will analyze the novel in feminist perspective and concentrate on the three women’s sacrifice to Paul’s growth in a man-centered society, in hope of better understanding the intension of the novel.  相似文献

According to Freud, the formation and the dissolution of Oedipus complex are the natural processes of one’s psychosexual development. The growth of Amory Blaine chronicled in Fitzgerald’s This Side of Paradise can be a case in point. His formation of the complex is promoted by his mother’s exclusive love and the indifference of his father in his growth, while his dissolution of it is accompanied by his identification with the father figure Monsignor Darcy and his efforts to search for a suitable object of love with several women. All those are very important experiences for Amory’s psychological maturity.  相似文献

John Milton’s "On His Blindness" is one of his renowned sonnets, which takes on the unique characteristics in terms of style and theme."On His Blindness" was always regarded as the one that reflected Milton’s life and illustrated the heavy influence of Puritanism,in which Milton presented his calm attitude toward the blindness and deep reverence for God.However,if it is read between lines, more ideas about Milton’s confusion and latent complaint will be felt. This paper will adopt the idea of close reading of New Criticism to analyze what has been missed and misread through years in John Milton’s "On His Blindness".  相似文献

It was a tradition in Elizabethan time that love poems were written to praise lovers’fidelity, but Donne boldly broke the tradition and chose faithlessness as the theme in some of his poems. The paper analyzes a series of images in Donne’s love po ems to present the theme of faithlessness and then it discusses the reasons why Donne deals with the theme.Faithlessness in Don ne’s love poems can not be interpreted only as Donne’s doubt about love. The discussion of love’s fidelity in his poems also comes from Donne’s sensibility about instability of the world and his perturbation of religious belief.  相似文献

Marriage is the main idea of Jane Austen’s novels. The novel reflects the ideal marriage views by describing several different marriages. It reveals a real marriage should be based on love, actual need, morality and equality. It creates a contrast between a successful marriage and an unsuccessful one. Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage is considered as a successful one. In fact it embodies the author’s own concept of marriage, it is a fault to get married for only money and social status, but it is also foolish without thinking of these factors.  相似文献
