Abstract

A library and media center orientation program was developed for administrators, faculty and support staff after examining their information seeking behaviors, prior research, and demographics of this group. The goal of the orientation was to promote the library's and media center's services and resources; to encourage this user group to make use of them; and to teach the basic skills needed to address their information needs. This article includes a literature review; explanation of the processes involved in creating a library orientation program for this group; and discussion including ideas and thoughts as to where further research about this user group or library orientation programs might be beneficial.  相似文献

In spring 2014, the Henry Madden Library at Fresno State implemented an outreach program for incoming international students consisted of a campus orientation presentation, library orientation and tours, information literacy workshops, and international peer-advisor training. Assessment as a result of the program has shown a high level of use of help services among international students, as well as moderately higher use of several services and resources amongst students who attended the library orientation.  相似文献

Background:Prior to 2020, library orientation for first-year medical students at Weill Cornell Medicine took the form of an on-site treasure hunt competition. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the orientation for the MD class of 2024 was shifted to an all-virtual format. This shift mandated a full redesign of the library orientation.Case Presentation:The Samuel J. Wood Library sought to preserve the excitement and fun of the treasure hunt in the new virtual format. The competition was redesigned as a Zoom meeting using breakout rooms, with library faculty and staff serving as team facilitators. Tasks were rewritten, shifting the focus from the library''s physical spaces to its virtual services and online resources. The redesigned orientation was evaluated using two data sources: a postsession survey of student participants and a debriefing of the library employees who participated. Student evaluations were positive, while the faculty and staff provided numerous suggestions for improving future virtual orientations.Conclusions:A successful virtual library orientation requires careful preparation, including testing the competition tasks, full rehearsal with library facilitators, and a thoughtful approach to technology and logistics. We have chosen to share the materials we developed for other academic health sciences libraries that may wish to take a similar approach to their own virtual orientations.  相似文献

With limited budgets and library staff who are already stretched thin, how can academic libraries ever hope to understand and meet the growing variety of patron needs and desires? Colleges and universities across the country have been developing robust programs and services to support student veterans, including veteran-specific orientations. The Texas A&M University Libraries received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to pilot a veteran-specific library orientation inspired by the in-processing checklist, a common military method for orienting service members to their new military installations. This article describes the development of the Orienting Student Veterans to the Library project, details the structure and content of the library orientation, and shares the challenges and lessons learned from implementing the orientation. Assessment of the orientation revealed impact, especially in student veterans' self-reported likelihood of recommending library resources to fellow student veterans.  相似文献

Since 2011, the Kraemer Family Library at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) has offered Scrabble Scramble, an in-person, student-centered library orientation game, to incoming first-year students. This article describes our journey of developing, assessing, and refining Scrabble Scramble, which focuses on introducing first-year students to the basic services and resources of an academic library. Through analysis of student and library staff feedback survey results, this article reflects on the value of offering a student-centered, impactful, and personal orientation in an environment of rising student enrollment, steady staff numbers, and a trend to move orientation activities online.  相似文献

图书馆工作的开放与服务,有质的区别。高校图书馆“向社会开放”的表述,取向单一,外延太窄,容易产生误读。将高校图书馆为社会服务的活动和工作表述为“高校图书馆为社会服务”,可以涵盖高校图书馆为社会服务的所有形式和内容。信息服务、专业指导、方法培训、人才培养、技术支持、方案策划、项目合作、学术示范、科研引领等智力输出应该成为高校图书馆社会服务的主要取向,这种取向既反映了高校图书馆为社会服务这项工作的本质要求,又代表着此项工作的发展方向。

Summary

It is the responsibility of any institution offering distance education programs to provide library resources and services for its students. In contrast to traditional students who can find the library on a campus map and go there, distance learners need orientation in order to “find their way” to their library. Librarians must be proactive in their efforts to make the library visible and accessible to these students. Library resources and services must be made available in ways compatible with the needs of students in these programs. 泛在图书馆意为无所不在的图书馆,是图书馆服务的泛在化,被认为是未来图书馆的重要型态和发展模式。从泛在图书馆的角度认识今天的图书馆服务,本文提出,必须从基于物理图书馆的传统服务,转变为基于用户的学科化服务。为此,学科化服务需要确立如下工作目标和工作重点:从图书馆的学科馆员到用户的学科馆员;从以利用图书馆为目标到以利用信息和知识为目标;从各自为战到协同工作;从信息中介到科研合作伙伴;从提供资源利用的指导到充当用户的信息环境顾问。  相似文献

[目的/意义] 持续改进用户服务是大学图书馆可持续发展的根基,但当前的用户服务研究对图书馆现实服务的提升作用不明显。尝试在图书馆引入定标比超法,为图书馆服务提供一种实用、有效的优化方法和改进思路。[方法/过程] 梳理当前图书馆服务优化的常用方法和定标比超在图书馆界的应用,提出多目标定标比超在图书馆服务优化中的实施流程。选择一家高校图书馆与两家目标图书馆开展实证研究,建立新信息环境下包括三大层次、11项二级指标和46个评价项目的服务评价指标体系,分析本馆用户服务劣势和目标馆优秀实践,拟定服务优化的赶超方案。[结果/结论] 定标比超法之于图书馆服务领域,是一种务实、有效且易于操作的方法,为图书馆管理与创新提供了新的思路;加入新媒体服务、新技术采纳等评价内容的指标体系为今后图书馆评估指标的制订发挥参考作用。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

With the rapid rise in distance education and online courses, the need to provide effective library services to the faculty and students involved in online courses is vitally important. Traditional services cannot always be transferred easily to the online environment and may need to be modified, or new services may need to be created to meet the needs of online users. This article examines the needs and wants of faculty involved in offering online courses. A Web-based survey was administered to faculty teaching an online course within the past 2 years at the authors’ organization. Faculty were asked a series of questions including their use of current library services, their emphasis on students using library services, and the services and resources they would like the library to provide in the future. Questions for the survey were inspired by LibQual comments received during our 2005 and 2007 surveys as well as comments received from both faculty and students while teaching and participating in online courses. Faculty who took the survey teach in a variety of disciplines and have different experience levels with teaching online courses. Results of the survey will be presented along with inferences from the current literature. The audience will be invited to share their innovative service ideas. Participants will gain ideas for updated or new services to faculty teaching online courses.  相似文献

The deployment of information services through mobile apps is an innovative plan to provide effective services to end users. Libraries can promote and expand their existing information services by offering mobile apps to access electronic resources, the library Web site, online catalogs, and institutional repositories. This article discusses a realistic approach to enhance library services through mobile applications.
