The shell burst, and the five peas rolled out into the bright sunshine. There they lay in a child's hand. The little boy said they were fine peas for his pea-shooter.And immediately he put one in and shot it out."Now I am flying out into the wide world," said the pea, "Catch me if you can," and he was gone in a moment."I," said the second, "want to fly straight to the sun." And went away."We will go to sleep wherever we find ourselves," said the two next, "We shall still be rolling onwards," They felt on the floor, and roll about before they go into the pea-shooter;but they were put in it. "We shall go farther than the others," said they."What is to happen will happen," said the last,as he was shot out of the pea-shooter;and as he spoke he flew up against an old board under a window of an old house, and fell into a little crevice. The moss closed round him,and there he lay.  相似文献

Hemingway established a well-known literary theory - iceberg principle. He said he always attempted to create his literary works according to this principle. In his opinion,if a prose writer has a pretty clear idea of what he writes about, then he can omit the things he knows, and the readers will strongly feel that what the writer has omitted seems to have been written as long as what he writes is authentic.Hemingway himself once said,"The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one eighth of it being above water."Here, one eighth refers to the information given by the author, and the rest refers to the unwrit ten information that can be acquired in readers’imagination on the basis of the one eighth. The Killers is a good example of Hemingway’s iceberg principle. This essay will analyse the characters in it to show how the principle was used in this short story. With no doubt the iceberg principle leaves a large space for the readers to imagine and better understand Hemingway’s works.  相似文献

The business" entertainment attracts many profession or "show young people. Unfortunately, only a few can hope to become famous. Talent is not enough, because show business is as competitive as any other business. Without a good manager, a performer can never hope to succeed. Fashion is very important in this business, too. The best tailor ( 裁缝 )in the world will never be a success if he makes old-fashioned clothes. In exactly the same way, a performer must change his "act" in order to follow the taste of the moment. This is true for actors, dancers and comedians, but perhaps most of all for singers.  相似文献

In the United States, headmasters and teachers discipline studentsin several ways. The teacher often writes to or calls the students' parents. Some- times students have to stay at school for one hour. If a student behaves very badly, the headmaster can stop the student having classes. The student can't come to school for one, two or three days. MrLazares, the headmaster of a middle school in Ohio, did not like to dis- cipline his students in these ways. He thought if he didn't let the students come to school, they were happy. "A three-day holiday!" they thought.  相似文献

In the modern era, the Jewish-Americans were faced with challenges because of the assimilation and modernity environment in the US, and as a result, many of them were in a double bind—to be an assimilated American citizen or to be a traditional Jew. With his work"The Imported Bridegroom", Abraham Cahan contemplated on the subject of Jewish immigration and assimilation and he made a ground-breaking contribution to the establishment of American modernity. This paper intends to analyze Cahan’s attitudes towards assimilation and modernity and how he builds up modernity for all of the Americans. Three characters in"The Imported Bridegroom", who stand for three prototypes of modern Jewish-Americans confronting the overwhelming flood of assimilation and the duty for retaining their traditions, will be analyzed. Through the composition of this work, Cahan tried to spread the Jewish culture on the one hand, and on the other, he warned the peripheral that it was difficult to be assimilated without disasters even if they had made contribution to the formation of modernity.  相似文献

Keeping pleasant "He is a fool who can not be angry, but he is really a wise man who will not." The habit of keeping pleasant is indeed better than an income of a thousand dollars a year. The life without cheerfulness is like the severe winter without the sun. We all love cheerful company, but we are apt to forget that cheerfulness is a habit which can be cultivated by all. We find it very difficult to be gay when we are in distress .It requires great courage. We should never forget that to  相似文献

To a student of English, reading is one of the four basic skills. And his ultimate goal in reading English is to be able grasp idea as quickly and eaily as he would if he were reading his native language. Yet in early stages of language acquisition, the first inclination in reading of most English students is to translate. Translation is a slow, laborious process. The writer's train of thoughts may become lost, as well as the enjoyment of reading. Moreover, translation is an art in itself and not a practical procedure for everyday reading. The student should attempt to develop a feeling for the target language so that he is really reading, not deciphering word for word.  相似文献

Many teachers want to be a happy teacher. But how can we? Here are some ideas to share with you. First,do our work well.I think if we want to be a happy teacher,we should work hard.We should love our work and do our work well. Here is a story. There was a student, who, even though he was in Senior Three, still wet the bed.Nobody knew his secret, because every morning after he got up,he covered the wet sheet with the quilt. This secret was finally discovered by Mr.Wang, his Chinese teacher.However,Mr.Wang didn't tell anyone about the situation. What he did was, every day after the student went tO class,he would take the wet sheet off the boy's bed and hang it in the sun to dry.Possibly the boy who wet the bed knew what was going on but no one else knew.Nobody knew how long Mr.Wang continued to dry the boy's bed sheet. In a word,Mr Wang continued to dry the boy's sheet for however long the boy continued to wet his bed.  相似文献

When you are giving the knowledge to the students, don't forget to teach them all the abilities of learning this language. Then how to improve the students' listening skill? We know the largest difference between mother lan- guage learning and foreign language learning is the envi- ronment.A child can soon learn his mother language well. He has heard a lot before he can say something and walk. Then after he is able to walk and say,he has a chance of listening to more. Before he goes to school,he has al- ready been a good listener and speaker.  相似文献

Skinny Dog
I’ve been saving money for a new guitar. It took me over a year, but now I have enough to buy the one I want.Nothside Music has a Pindari Super Twanger on sale this week and I'm going to buy one tomorrow.I can hardly wait! I think the guitar is really going to help the sound of our band.We call the band Skinny Dog because of the skinny dog that lives near our practice hall. Our band sounds very good now.Mr Walton, the music teacher, heard us practicing today at school, and he came in to listen for a while. He seemed to enjoy it.When we finished,he said we should try to have a gig at a party or something.  相似文献
