This essay contributes to the discussions in intercultural communication scholarship on key intercultural urgencies, issues, and challenges in today's world through the ethical framework of Emmanuel Levinas and his discussion of “absolute otherness” that informs and expands the dialogue on interculturality, cultural humility, and ethics. Levinas's discussion of “absolute otherness” aims to preserve difference—the otherness of the other—by asserting the ethical relation prior to the ontological relation and carries significant communicative implications in terms of the relation of the self and the other as well as making sense of difference and identity, and offers a new way of talking about these issues in the field of communication studies, specifically in intercultural communication. An illustration of attending to the other beyond reduction to the same is offered through a pedagogical application of the Levinasian framework in the intercultural communication class.  相似文献

Within the multidisciplinary study concerning one of the covered dockyards (called tezone 105) erected in the Arsenal of Venice, carried out by the ‘Target Venezia’ CNR Project, it will be presented here a preliminary work concerning the survey of decay1. This analysis is strictly connected with the other works carried out by the Operative Units of the ‘Target Venezia’, especially with the stratigraphical survey2 and the chemical and microstructural characterisation of mortars3 and bricks4. First, the survey of decay has been based on the stratigraphical investigations of the tezone structure, which has allowed the classification of the different building phases over a long period (from the XVI until the first half of the XX century). Second, a computer aided methodology has been applied in order to make the research easier and to allow multiple queries either to know which kind of decay are present in every point of the surfaces and the global extension of each typology of degradation5.  相似文献

In July 2004, Chen Hao, acting curator of Zhejiang Museum, asked me to meet a father and his son for a 70-year-old legend. Wang Jiying was the father. He used to be curator of the museum. His son was a company's chief executive. They showed me many old paintings by an artist named Sha Qi. These paintings reminded me of legends I heard in Ningbo, my hometown. I was amazed by the modernistic strokes in the paintings. It was said that the talented artist painted them in the 1930s and 1940s. I calculated that Sha Qi would be nearly 100 years old in 2004. Where was he now? Where did the paintings come from?  相似文献

The 500-year-old Shakespeare's play first made the name of the city known all over Europe. In modern times, movies and TV have brought the tear-jerker to every corner of the world. Today, Verona attracts people who come to visit Juliet's residence in the city.  相似文献

An English baby girl was born at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital on Jan. 19, 1919. The father J. B. Tayer, a professor of economy at Yan Jing University in Peking (Beijing), named the baby Gladness, a meaningful name standing for the pleasure that her birth had brought to the family. Ever since that day, this blue-eyed English girl was cradled on the Chinese land. China was experiencing great political chaos during the early 20's, when there were ceaseless fightings between warlords. After much consideration, her parents decided to send her and her sibhngs back to England for education. Gladness left China with food memories of the lane where she had lived in, the tinkle of bells on camels in the outskirts of Peking and her little friends at the kindergarten. During her 10 years' stay in England, her father went hack there for vacations and  相似文献

Perfect reproductions of works of art: Substitutes or heresy?   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The paper attempts an empirical investigation into a number of subjective determinants used in the evaluation of a work of art. Individuals' decisions to buy works of art seem based predominantly on aesthetic benefits. This is true for original pieces of art as well as for reproductions, i.e. there seems to be some substitutability between both kinds of objects. Major differences in the evaluation of originals and reproductions arise with respect to the secondary characteristics of art objects, not specifically with regard to the work of art itself. With respect to the willingness to pay (wtp) for a reproduction, a major impact seems to be whether or not the original work exists, i.e. a rationing effect seems to arise. The wtp for a reproduction also seems to depend on whether or not an individual earns his/her income in the arts sector.  相似文献
