Summary

This article describes how a teacher changed her method of teaching after acquiring knowledge about graphing calculators in a Professional development program. It describes one particular unit on understanding variables and graph interpretation taught in a seventh-grade science and math class. The use of graphing calculators proved to be effective in increasing student understanding of relationships between variables, graphing, and experimental design. The teacher in our project also found graphing calculators to be effective tools for teaching constructively. Our study implies that math and science teaching can be improved through the use of graphing calculators.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper reports on the use of Nurture Groups (NGs) in mainstream infant schools as a promising example of an approach to early intervention for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties. The paper describes the philosophy and nature of NGs and offers empirical evidence supporting their effectiveness. It also describes a diagnostic tool designed to assist in the identification and monitoring of children requiring placement in NGs. In addition, the paper provides a brief account of an empirical study of staff attitudes towards and beliefs about NGs.  相似文献

This article describes the reflexive practice of both health educator and social researcher in the context of gay community responses to the threat of HIV and AIDS. It describes the processes and structures that were put in place in Australia by AIDS Councils and by social researchers to develop effective health promotion campaigns. It also describes the reflexive relationships between these two partners and between each of them and the gay community. A health promotion campaign that arose out of social researchers identifying an HIV-prevention strategy developed by gay men themselves that was subsequently elaborated by health educators and reflected back to the gay community illustrates the critical reflexivity of the partnership. It concludes that the development of such reflexive partnerships between the gay community, health educators and social researchers provides the basis for effective HIV prevention and education.  相似文献

This article describes two female beginning teachers from the same teacher education cohort. The two women had many experiences in common, but thought about these experiences quite differently. The article focuses on how their conceptions of students and of themselves as teachers changed over a 5-year period, and explores some of the interactions between their theorizing and their experiences. Abstract

The paper describes an exercise designed to make members of selection panels and candidates more aware of factors at work in the processes of short‐listing and interviewing candidates. As described, the exercise was used to train school governors, headteachers and heads of science departments on the one hand, and student teachers on the other. The exercise takes the form of a simulation of an appointment to a teaching post and concerns both the short‐listing and interview stages. The paper describes an evaluation of the exercise and concludes that it plays a useful part in the training of selection panels and students.  相似文献

Reading and library faculty collaborated in the revision of the developmental reading curriculum at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in an effort to strengthen students’ reading and information literacy skills through project-based learning. This article describes how the new curriculum addresses the challenging concepts defined in the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education in an effort to prepare students more effectively for college-level courses. The results of this new curriculum included stronger posttest scores and student success data.  相似文献

This paper describes an action research enquiry conducted at the State College of Education, Vienna. The author's main concern was the implementation of a Sociology course using English as the language of instruction. The paper describes the context in which the project took place, the main ideas of action research, the stages in planning, the adjustments which had to be made and the methods of evaluation. The results show many benefits for the students, the institution and the author. However, the costs of implementation also have to be taken into account. A critical reflection is given which makes it clear that institutional support is absolutely necessary for long-term success.  相似文献

This article describes the value of Piaget's equilibration theory for understanding characteristics of the young gifted child. Key elements of equilibration theory are discussed. Differences in the equilibration patterns in gifted children are described and application of equilibration to other than cognitive systems is considered. This article describes the use of two linked instruments, the Instructor Effectiveness Check Sheet (IEC) and Instructor Effectiveness Questionnaire (IEQ). The use of an evaluation instrument during a course can enable improvements to be made — even with experienced instructors. Detail can be taken from the IEC and IEQ to find obvious and not so obvious needed changes and attention to individuals in the group. The article gives an example where the instruments were used to teach instructors about different pedagogical constructs, describes further research using the instruments at the Nantahala Outdoor Center, USA, and describes a case study on a wilderness education group that illustrated improvement in effective teaching.  相似文献
