Recent research on student learning in higher education has identified clear associations between variations in students’ perceptions of the academic environment and variations in their study behaviour. This study investigated a general theoretical model linking students’ demographic characteristics, perceptions and study behaviour with measures of outcome, and in particular, compared three accounts of the causal relationship between perceptions and study behaviour. Data were obtained from 469 postgraduate students at six British business schools. Path analysis was used to assess the causal relationships among the students’ age and gender, their scores on the Course Experience Questionnaire, their scores on the Revised Approaches to Studying Inventory and their ratings of general satisfaction with their programmes. This yielded evidence for the causal efficacy of most of the paths identified in the general theoretical model. In particular, as in the case of students taking more traditional academic subjects, there exists a bidirectional causal relationship between variations in students’ perceptions of the academic environment and variations in their study behaviour. 相似文献

Variation in Students’ Experiences of the ‘Oxford Tutorial’ 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper examines Oxford University students’ conceptions of the role of the tutorial in their learning. An analysis of
interviews with 28 students constituted four qualitatively different conceptions of the ‘Oxford Tutorial’. These ranged from
the tutorial involving the tutor explaining to the student what the student did not know, to the tutorial involving the tutor
and the student in exchanging different points of view and both coming to a new understanding of the topic under discussion.
These different conceptions also appeared to be related to variations in students’ views of the role of the work done in preparation
for the tutorial, their view of the student’s and tutor’s roles in the tutorial, and the conception of knowledge that students
adopted in relation to the tutorial. The implications of this study are discussed in terms of the relations between students’
conceptions of tutorials and their anticipated learning outcomes and its implications for contexts outside of Oxford in terms
of students’ conceptions of academic tasks. 相似文献

This paper explored the power dynamics between domestic and international students in the context of higher education in an Asian non-English speaking country, Korea. Despite increased international student mobility in recent years, little is known about the relationship dynamics among students from different countries, especially related to power issues. The findings in this study suggested that international students’ countries of origin and language of communication created different power statuses compared to Korean students by their empowerment and discrimination. Power differentials also existed among Korean students due to variations in their English ability to interact with international students. Conversely, international students’ attitudes and acceptance influenced Korean students’ attitudes toward them, irrespective of power differentials created by countries and language, as perceived by Korean students. The implications related to the recent trend of international student mobility are discussed. 相似文献

The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between students’ interests, their use of certain specific learning
strategies and causal attributions which they made for their academic achievement. In this manner, we attempted to explore
the relationships between some important variables from three different, but connected phases of self-regulated learning:
the forethought phase (interests), the performance control phase (learning strategies) and the self-reflective phase (causal
attributions).
Results confirmed the presumption that learning strategies could be a potential mediator in the relationship between students’
interests and their academic achievement. Also, results indicate that the causal dimension of controllability could have a
partial mediating role between students’ academic achievement and their interests. Generally, our findings indicate a dynamic
and cyclical nature of learning process — interest is an integral part of this process and it could be conceptualized as both
a consequence and an antecedent of cognitive aspects of learning. 相似文献

The purpose of this study is to investigate social science doctoral students’ perceptions and attitudes toward written feedback
about their academic writing and towards those who provide it. The study culminates in an explanatory model to describe the
relationships between students’ perceptions and attitudes, their revision decisions, and other relevant factors in their written
feedback practices. The investigation used a mixed methods approach involving 276 participants from two large mountain west
public universities. The main purpose of the qualitative phase was to develop a background for a questionnaire and provisional
model to be used in the quantitative phase. Structural Equation Modeling analysis during the quantitative phase provided an
eight-factor model that shows the relationships of different factors regarding feedback practices as they relate to doctoral
students. 相似文献

This study discusses and compares five types of bullying in middle schools among ten Asia-Pacific countries. The study does
this in the following ways. It explores the impact of students’ genders and family backgrounds on the bullying, finds interactions
of the victimization of bullying and relevant attitudes toward schools, teachers and schoolmates, and reveals the relationships
between the experiences of bullying and the difficulties, pressures and achievements of academic study in each country. The
findings provide meaningful reference points for understanding students’ ethics and behavior education, schools’ counseling
and support systems (as well as the general improvement of the situation in the Asia-Pacific region), and for cross-cultural
education comparisons. 相似文献

Explicitly informing students about learning goals has been argued to foster intentional learning. This study tested three
theoretical hypotheses regarding the facilitating effects of learning goals by investigating 72 students’ actual reading behaviour
and cognitive processes (i.e., the use of learning goals). Participants studied a text presented on 15 separate computer screens
with/without learning goals. In line with the three hypotheses, the analyses focused on three aspects: students’ interpretations
of the learning goals, information selection processes and monitoring behaviour. Results indicated variability among students
in their perceptions of the learning goals in terms of goal consistency and specificity. Students in the learning goal condition
recorded more goal-relevant information in their notes. However, only few students deliberately used learning goals to monitor
their goal-directed activities while studying the text. Analysis of students’ reading behaviour and cognitive processes suggests
that the absence of significant performance differences between the conditions can be explained by referring to students’
actual use of learning goals. 相似文献

The present study aims to analyse the complex relationships between the relevant constructs of students’ demographic background,
perceptions, learning patterns and (proxy measures of) learning outcomes in order to delineate the possible direct, indirect,
or spurious effects among them. The analytical methodology is substantively framed against the studies of Richardson (British
Journal of Educational Psychology 76:867–893, 2006, Higher Education 54:385–416, 2007) that utilised a regression-based methodology to infer the possible causal relationships among the relevant learning constructs.
A composite research instrument, written in Chinese and derived from the Inventory of Learning Styles (ILS) and the Course
Experience Questionnaire (CEQ), was used to collect students’ feedback on their perceptions of the learning environment and
their learning patterns. Valid responses were obtained from 1,572 students studying at six institutions in the post-secondary
education sector in Hong Kong, a new response-context for both the CEQ and the ILS. In adapting the research instruments to
a new Chinese response-context, the findings are generally consistent with those reported in other published works (e.g. no
relationship between students’ demographic background and their satisfaction with the programme, and a significant relationship
between students’ exhibition of undirected learning patterns and low expected performance), but there are also some noteworthy
discrepancies. The findings therefore buttress the confidence with which an ILS-based General Theoretical Model of student
learning, adapted from Richardson (British Journal of Educational Psychology 76:867–893, 2006, Higher Education 54:385–416, 2007), may be used to conceptualise and interpret the dynamics of variation across different cultural response-contexts. While
the CEQ provides some valuable complementary insights, it is an instrument that requires further development in the response-context
of the present study. 相似文献

Because it focuses on the interactions between students and their environments, Holland’s theory of vocational choice provides a powerful framework for studying college experiences. The present study assessed the relative merits of psychological and sociological interpretations of Holland’s theory by examining the relationships among students’ expectations about college, their personality types, and their intended academic majors. Results indicated that both the psychological and sociological aspects of Holland’s theory aid in understanding students’ college expectations. 相似文献

This study examined relationships between important aspects of a university education and the assessment and development of
generic skills. A sample of 323 students enrolled in single or double arts, engineering and/or science degrees from a research-intensive
university in Australia were administered the Graduate Skills Assessment to measure four generic skills—critical thinking,
interpersonal understandings, problem solving and written communication. As expected, students’ grade point average was generally
found to be significantly related to scores for all four skill scales both within each discipline area and across the total
sample. Reporting of academic achievement through the GPA therefore provides some measure of students’ generic skill levels.
However, since relationships were modest, GPA should be considered an imperfect indicator of levels of generic skills attainment.
In addition, we found only limited evidence that students’ skill levels increased with progression through their studies,
with study length being consistently related only to Problem Solving. Finally, our analyses revealed significant, interdisciplinary
variations in students’ skill scores. Results are discussed with respect to theoretical, practical and methodological implications. 相似文献

We investigated relationships among elementary teachers’ reading-related content knowledge (knowledge of literature and phonology),
their philosophical orientation toward reading instruction, their classroom practice, and their students’ learning. Correlations
showed little relationship between instructional philosophy and content knowledge, and little relationship between instructional
philosophy and classroom practice. However, relationships emerged between content knowledge and instruction, and between kindergarten
teachers’ phonological knowledge and their students’ reading achievement. We recommend that the recent focus on teacher’s
disciplinary knowledge be broadened to include teachers of beginning reading and that teachers be afforded opportunities to
develop the necessary knowledge base to teach reading effectively. 相似文献

The purpose of this qualitative interpretive research study was to examine high school students’ written scientific explanations
during biology laboratory investigations. Specifically, we characterized the types of epistemologies and forms of reasoning
involved in students’ scientific explanations and students’ perceptions of scientific explanations. Sixteen students from
a rural high school in the Southeastern United States were the participants of this research study. The data consisted of
students’ laboratory reports and individual interviews. The results indicated that students’ explanations were primarily based
on first-hand knowledge gained in the science laboratories and mostly representing procedural recounts. Most students did
not give explanations based on a theory or a principle and did not use deductive reasoning in their explanations. The students
had difficulties explaining phenomena that involved intricate cause–effect relationships. Students perceived scientific explanation
as the final step of a scientific inquiry and as an account of what happened in the inquiry process, and held a constructivist–empiricist
view of scientific explanations. Our results imply the need for more explicit guidance to help students construct better scientific
explanations and explicit teaching of the explanatory genre with particular focus on theoretical and causal explanations. 相似文献

The attitude construct is widely used by teachers and researchers in mathematics education. Often, however, teachers’ diagnosis
of ‘negative attitude’ is a causal attribution of students’ failure, perceived as global and uncontrollable, rather than an
accurate interpretation of students’ behaviour, capable of steering future action. In order to make this diagnosis useful
for dealing with students’ difficulties in mathematics, it is necessary to clarify the construct attitude from a theoretical viewpoint, while keeping in touch with the practice that motivates its use. With this aim, we investigated
how students tell their own relationship with mathematics, proposing the essay “Me and maths” to more than 1,600 students
(1st to 13th grade). A multidimensional characterisation of a student’s attitude towards mathematics emerges from this study.
This characterisation and the study of the evolution of attitude have many important consequences for teachers’ practice and
education. For example, the study shows how the relationship with mathematics is rarely told as stable, even by older students:
this result suggests that it is never too late to change students’ attitude towards mathematics. 相似文献

Most studies indicate primary students’ attitudes towards and interest in science decline as they progress into the secondary
years. Longitudinal qualitative research exploring this phenomenon is rare as is research which focuses on the students’ voice
as they cross the interface. In this study multiple qualitative data sources, supported by a ‘science interest’ composite
scale, followed 20 students over 2 years. In contrast to baseline data on their peers these students, in general, maintained
their interest in science. Apart from identifying the teacher’s pedagogical approach and classroom environment as two key
issues in understanding these students’ journeys, the importance of listening to and heeding the students’ voice may be an
even more critical concern in addressing the decline in students’ attitudes and interest in science. 相似文献

This paper reports on an Irish study examining first year students’ recollections of their concerns, motivations, level of
preparedness and perceived skills on entry to university. The study aims to investigate and understand the implications of
the attitudes of first year students as they make the transition to university. It also explores students’ behaviour during
their initial weeks at university. It is important to understand the anxieties of new students, their views on their abilities
and their confidence in managing their new role as these factors will have consequences for their experience as first year
university students. These findings are explored with a view to enhancing the quality of support for students during this
key transition. 相似文献

Students’ learning interests and attitudes toward science have both been studied for decades. However, the connection between
them with students’ life experiences about science and technology has not been addressed much. The purpose of this study is
to investigate students’ learning interests and life experiences about science and technology, and also their attitudes toward
technology. A total of 942 urban ninth graders in Taiwan were invited to participate in this study. A Likert scale questionnaire,
which was developed from an international project, ROSE, was adapted to collect students’ ideas. The results indicated that
boys showed higher learning interests in sustainability issues and scientific topics than girls. However, girls recalled more
life experiences about science and technology in life than boys. The data also presented high values of Pearson correlation
about learning interests and life experiences related to science and technology, and in the perspective on attitudes towards
technology. Ways to promote girls’ learning interests about science and technology and the implications of teaching and research
are discussed as well. 相似文献

Students’ assessment preferences, perceptions of assessment and their relationships to study results
Gerard van de Watering David Gijbels Filip Dochy Janine van der Rijt 《Higher Education》2008,56(6):645-658
The purposes of this study are to gain more insight into students’ actual preferences and perceptions of assessment, into
the effects of these on their performances when different assessment formats are used, and into the different cognitive process
levels assessed. Data were obtained from two sources. The first was the scores on the assessment of learning outcomes, consisting
of open ended and multiple choice questions measuring the students’ abilities to recall information, to understand concepts
and principles, and to apply knowledge in new situations. The second was the adapted Assessment Preferences Inventory (API)
which measured students’ preferences as a pre-test and perceptions as a post-test. Results show that, when participating in
a New Learning Environment (NLE), students prefer traditional written assessment and questions which are as closed as possible,
assessing a mix of cognitive processes. Some relationships, but not all the expected ones, were found between students’ preferences
and their assessment scores. No relationships were found between students’ perceptions of assessment and their assessment
scores. Additionally, only forty percent of the students had perceptions of the levels of the cognitive processes assessed
that matched those measured by the assessments. Several explanations are discussed. 相似文献

According to theories of students’ test preparation, students may optimize their test performance by paying special attention
to important information and processing this information in ways that are appropriate to the type of questions included in
the forthcoming test. However, research is unclear about the conditions under which students adapt study strategies to the
demands of test preparation tasks. Moreover, little is known about the processes and abilities involved. In this article,
we present a theoretical model that integrates various factors that seem relevant to strategy adaptation in test preparation,
including the teacher’s intended task demands, students’ perceptions of these demands, students’ personal goals for studying,
and their ability to adapt and implement strategies. The aim of our model is to stimulate further research on strategy adaptation,
which may eventually provide evidence-based guidelines that could help teachers support the development of students’ strategy
adaptability and use tests as learning tools. 相似文献

We examined the relationship between English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ interpersonal behaviour and students’ fluency
in English in secondary education in China. A total of 160 students from four classes in the southwest part of China were
asked to assess their teachers’ interpersonal behaviour using the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (QTI). This was the
first time that the QTI was successfully translated and used (in EFL classrooms) in China. Cronbach’s α reliability coefficients
for the scales were adequate, while confirmatory factor analyses provided support for the theoretical framework behind the
questionnaire. Results showed that teacher uncertainty was negatively correlated with student achievement. Furthermore, the
degree of teacher cooperation with students was the only significant predictor for student achievement, but its effect disappeared
when student background variables were taken into account. Results also indicated a discrepancy between students’ perceptions
of preferred and actual teacher interpersonal behaviour. The tolerant-authoritative profile was the most common interpersonal
style based on Chinese students’ perceptions. 相似文献
