Bringing the Classroom to the Web: Effects of Using New Technologies to Capture and Deliver Lectures
Technology expands instructional options for faculty, and this study examines the differential learning effects of offering
a lecture on physics to students in a traditional classroom versus internet video formats. Based on an experiment conducted
in a natural educational context, results indicate enhanced transfer of lecture information in the video formats relative
to the live condition, with students also responding more positively to personalized video presentation.

Since many teachers and students recognize other kinds of knowledge (faith) based on other ways of knowing, consideration
of these realities is appropriate for the science education community. Understanding the multitude of ways that clergy view
relationships between science and faith (i.e. alternative ways of knowing) would assist in understanding various ways that
people address complex issues arising from ideas about science and faith. We administered a questionnaire composed of multiple-choice
and short answer items to 63 United Methodist ministers. Findings included (1) that formal, organized faith contexts (e.g.
church services) serve as informal science education opportunities, (2) participants demonstrated considerable diversity regarding
the types of relationships developed between science and faith, and (3) participants recognized a need exists for better understandings
of science and its relationship to faith for them, their colleagues, and their congregations.

Wilhelm Wundt (1832–1920) believed that consciousness was represented by the interconnection of psychical processes comprised
of temporal elements and compounds. To explore these processes, Wundt used a metronome to measure the amount of information
that passed into consciousness across time. The current project replicated some of his procedures, to better understand the
role of introspection and the complexity of the metronome task for experimenters and observers. The results of the replication
were mixed, but the replication helped provide insights into Wundt’s procedures and their relationship to his theories.
This study originated as a class assignment in the Spring of 2004 (see Tweney, this issue).

This exploratory study examines the learning beliefs of high and low achieving, low-income Mexican-American students. Semi-structured
interviews were conducted with 11 ninth grade students. The qualitative analysis shows that students’ perceptions of their
teachers’ expectations of a “good” student or a “not so good” student did not differ along achievement lines. However, the
students’ perceptions about what it means to be a good student differentiated the low-achievers from the high-achievers. This
study’s findings may be used to inform educators about Mexican-American students’ orientation towards school and learning,
in hopes for creating more equitable educational settings where all students achieve to their fullest potential.

Prompted by the notion of “Transfer Shock”, numerous studies examined academic performance of transfer students at senior
institutions. However, few studies are found that examine how the varying nature of semester GPAs impact subsequent persistence
behavior of transfer students after the initial drop in their college GPAs. Using an institutional data set, this study longitudinally
investigated departure behavior of transfer students at a senior institution. Particular attention was given to how entry
at different times and semester GPAs affected transfer student departure. Results indicate that during their first semester,
sophomore and junior transfer students were 73% less likely to depart than freshman transfer students. After controlling for
explanatory variables, higher semester GPAs were positively associated with higher persistence rates throughout the observation
period.

In response to the mounting national support provided to mentoring programs and initiatives in higher education, the present
article updates a review article written by Jacobi (Rev Educ Res 61(4):505–532, 1991). The article revisits the mentoring literature in an attempt to re-frame and update the definition and characteristics of
mentoring provided by Jacobi. It also synthesizes and critically analyzes empirical literature specific to mentoring college
students published between 1990 and 2007. Finally, the article presents broad theoretical perspectives of mentoring from the
business, psychology and education literature in preface to a proposed theoretical framework specific to mentoring college
students. The article concludes with specific recommendations to advance the mentoring literature.

This study focuses on how social class affects the college experiences and outcomes for African American students in 4-year
colleges and universities. Using a national, longitudinal data base, the findings indicate that low SES African American students
have less contact with faculty, study less, are less involved with student organizations, work more, and have lower grades
than do their high SES peers or all African American students. Furthermore, 9 years after entering college, low SES students
report lower incomes, lower rates of degree attainment and lower aspirations than their high SES peers, and were less likely
to have attended graduate school. Logistic regression results indicate that sex, college GPA, and plans following college
significantly affect the likelihood that a student will attend graduate school.

Program assessments are an essential part of the ongoing survival of teaching centers performed by faculty development personnel
at institutions of higher education. Little research is available to guide developers in performing these assessments. In
this article we describe assessments conducted at three Canadian universities and highlight the theoretical models used to
guide the process. Reflections on the strengths and challenges are discussed for each program assessment for the purpose of
assisting faculty developers in performing similar program assessments of their faculty development offices.

Pascarella (J Coll Stud Dev 47:508–520, 2006) has called for an increase in use of longitudinal data with pretest-posttest
design when studying effects on college students. However, such designs that use multiple measures to document change are
vulnerable to an important threat to internal validity, regression to the mean. Herein, we discuss a brief history of regression
to the mean and illustrate a straightforward procedure to make adjustments to initial pretest scores for regression to the
mean effects utilizing a method developed by Roberts (in: G. Echternacht (Guest ed.) New directions for testing and measurement,
1980). Analyses are shown with both unadjusted and adjusted pretest scores, illustrating dramatic differences in conclusions
about whether students change across time.

Approaches to research in the social sciences often embrace schema that are consistent with positivism, even though it is
widely held that positivism is discredited and essentially dead. Accordingly, many of the methods used in present day scholarship
are supported by the tenets of positivism, and are sources of hegemony. We exhort researchers to employ reflexive methods
to identify the epistemologies, ontologies and axiologies that are salient in their scholarship and, when necessary, transform
practices such that forms of oppression associated with crypto-positivism are identified and extinguished.
