The elements of Sartre’s existentialism are shown in Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery: The world abounds with absurdities and bitterness; people can be the hell to each other; an individual has a free choice and act, but should be responsible for his or her behavior. Shirley discusses the problem of the existence of an individual in the complex web of society and environment in The Lottery, just as Sartre in his works of existentialism.  相似文献

The publication of the famous novel The Sound and The Fury projects the long-enduring reputation of William Faulkner as a household American writer in every nook and cranny of the world.Just in this novel,Faulkner employs the literary device of stream of consciousness and makes a good play with time and order to his own joy, which makes it an outstanding literary feature in the novel. In this essay, the unusual conceptions of time and order in the novel are tentatively probed mainly from the following three perspectives:1) the initiative for Faulkner creating the novel as a novel against time and order.2) the disordered arrangement as an artistic device——the optimum key to delivering the story.3) the potential order underlying the seeming disorder in the novel.  相似文献

Human living environment interacts with human behaviors.Environment to some degree determines human behaviors which in return reshape and sustain the dynamic environment.Taking Richard Jefferies’ The Acorn Gatherer as a case study, this paper makes an argument that the behaviors of the villagers in the story can be more adequately interpreted in view of the backward countryside environment, and the same is true with the author Richard Jefferies’ non-interference in the omniscient third-person point of view in writing the story. It is Richard Jefferies’ family environment that makes up his viewpoint of writing, reflecting his critical loving of the countryside, where lives boom and conventions are extremely followed.  相似文献

It was a tradition in Elizabethan time that love poems were written to praise lovers’fidelity, but Donne boldly broke the tradition and chose faithlessness as the theme in some of his poems. The paper analyzes a series of images in Donne’s love po ems to present the theme of faithlessness and then it discusses the reasons why Donne deals with the theme.Faithlessness in Don ne’s love poems can not be interpreted only as Donne’s doubt about love. The discussion of love’s fidelity in his poems also comes from Donne’s sensibility about instability of the world and his perturbation of religious belief.  相似文献

As leading figures in English literature during the Neoclassical period,Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift both showed great concern with the nature of man and his place in the Great Chain of Being. They both emphasized the irreplaceable role of reason in guiding man in his self-positioning in the universe, and pointed out the tragic, pathetic,or detestable fall man was vulnerable to in case of violating the law of nature.Pope attached more importance to setting right man’ s position as against God and beast, while Swift showed more interest in the chain of being within the human society;Pope kept warning man against his pride and possible ruin as a result of his ambition, while Swift worried more about man’ s degradation due to loss of reason.  相似文献
