An increasing number of counselors are finding employment in nonschool agencies such as police departments. This article presents research conducted to explore police officers' perceptions of counseling and the stress they feel. Results indicate that a sizable portion of officers would initiate helping relationships if in-house counseling services were available. This is the fourth in a series of quadrennial surveys begun in 1960 to determine the extent and nature of counselor preparation at the master's and doctoral levels in the field of elementary school guidance and counseling. Nearly 90 percent (325) of the 367 counselor education departments in the U.S. responded to this survey. The main finding is the great acceleration of programs which provide specialization since 1968. Generic programs (n = 132), however, are still common. Major emphasis in specialized programs rests in laboratory and practicum experiences. Counselor educators in elementary school guidance and counseling are still mainly people who have not taken their advanced work in the field of elementary school guidance and counseling. 相似文献

In this article the authors summarize information gathered in a national survey of the course offerings and programs in marriage and family counseling offered by 244 counselor education departments. Approximately two-thirds of those departments offered such courses, which typically included: family counseling, family counseling practicum, human sexuality, family theory, couples counseling, and marriage and family dynamics. Approximately 90% of the departments supported marriage and family course offerings in counselor education departments. Implications for programming in marriage and family counseling are discussed. 相似文献

To help meet the need to educate school counselors in the broader aspects of their work, the application of simulation techniques is suggested. A rationale is provided with discussion centering on the following points: (a) simulation offers an opportunity to provide specific training emphases, and (b) simulation offers a way of providing a wide range of counseling and guidance experiences not easily obtainable under regular practicum conditions. Specific examples of simulation are described, including a case study, a PTA speech, a teachers' meeting, a counselor's day, and a school board presentation. Benefits for counselor education programs which can be realized from simulation experiences also are discussed. Rather than choosing actors to play roles it is suggested that practicing counselors, state department personnel, doctoral students, and counselor education faculty should participate in simulation activities. As role players, they will gain an appreciation of current trends in the education of counselors. 相似文献

This study examined congruence levels between client and counselor beliefs about psychological problems and its impact on counseling outcomes. Clients and counselors endorsed differing views for causation and treatment of psychological problems. Counseling outcomes were unaffected by congruence levels. This paper presents analysis of qualitative data from a research project looking at staff perceptions of plagiarism at a post‐1992 university. Twenty‐six members of staff from departments and academic schools from across the university took part in open and semi‐structured interviews. Analysis shows that variable definitions of plagiarism exist; both regarding student activities that constitute plagiarism and the way in which plagiarism is perceived to be related to cheating. The factors underlying these personal definitions are unclear, but the analysis suggests that values perceived to underpin higher education may play an important role. This paper provides new empirical data on staff perceptions of student plagiarism, which complement previous research on student perceptions. The potential implications of different perceptions of plagiarism, and a mismatch between staff and student understandings is highlighted as an area for further consideration. 相似文献

The ASCA statement on the role of the school counselor is a reification. As a generalist the counselor dissipates his professional identity. Institutional restraints on the job and upon the campus lead to incompetence in counseling practice and a pervasive belief that counseling is ineffective. A suggested alleviation of this problem specifically involves the abandonment of the teaching experience requirement, increasing counselor education staff commitment to counseling, and the introduction of a paid internship for counselor candidates. The primary purpose of this study is to report the evaluation of a degree programme in Education by final year undergraduate students of a university. The results show that arts and science students rated the courses, instruction and instructors in the education department significantly higher than those in their teaching subject departments; social science students rated their subject departments higher than the education department; the physical and health education students were indifferent in their ratings of both departments. The study further reveals that educational administration, educational psychology and guidance and counselling were rated in descending order as the most interesting courses in education. 相似文献

It was hypothesized in this study that dogmatism and externality in locus of control are inversely related to skill in facilitative responding when the effects of specific counselor training program, number of graduate hours in counseling, age, sex, race, and religious affiliation are controlled. The participants were 215 master's degree candidates majoring in guidance and counseling at three southwestern universities. Dogmatism and externality were measured by the Opinion Scale, and skill in facilitative responding was determined by application of the Gross Rating of Facilitative Interpersonal Functioning Scale to written responses of participants to 16 audiotaped client stimulus statements. Multiple regression and partial correlation techniques were used to test the hypothesis, and the results supported the hypothesis. This article presents the results of a survey of counselor education departments in the United States concerning the availability of coursework on sex-fair counseling, the percentage of females and males on counselor education faculties, the amount of training counselor educators had received on sex-fair counseling techniques, and the use of a handbook on sex equity that was developed by the ACES Commission on Sex Equality Concerns. The paper reports the findings of an investigation into academic staff perceptions of a rapidly changing research work environment in UK university education departments. The study sheds light on the emotional landscape of an environment shaped by performance-driven change. Based on an integrated triplex framework of analysis, the study addresses the complex interrelationship between performativity, work-related emotions and collective research identities. The findings highlight concerns about the emotional impact of work intensification and barriers to collective research identities. However, there is also evidence of strong motivation and a performativity that is internally and intrinsically driven. The implications for research leaders are considered, both in terms of leadership strategy and the leadership of staff in building vibrant research cultures at a time of major change in the sector in response to global challenges and opportunities. 相似文献

The inclusion of elementary school guidance and counseling within the current structure of American education is questioned by an examination of the ACES / ASCA joint policy statement on the role and responsibilities of the elementary school counselor. It is suggested that the vagueness and abstruseness of most definitions of elementary guidance and counseling are largely attributable to a lack of conceptual roots in a subject-matter discipline, developmental psychology, and the process of education. The notion of development as the central focus of guidance and counseling is then explored with particular emphasis on development as primary prevention. 相似文献
