下载免费PDF全文 Inquiry-based labs have been shown to greatly increase student participation and learning within the biological sciences. One challenge is to develop effective lab exercises within the constraints of large introductory labs. We have designed a lab for first-year biology majors to address two primary goals: to provide effective learning of the unique aspects of the plant life cycle and to gain a practical knowledge of experimental design. An additional goal was to engage students regardless of their biology background. In our experience, plant biology, and the plant life cycle in particular, present a pedagogical challenge because of negative student attitudes and lack of experience with this topic. This lab uses the fern Ceratopteris richardii (C-Fern), a model system for teaching and research that is particularly useful for illustrating alternation of generations. This lab does not simply present the stages of the life cycle; it also uses knowledge of alternation of generations as a starting point for characterizing the her1 mutation that affects gametophyte sexual development. Students develop hypotheses, arrive at an appropriate experimental design, and carry out a guided inquiry on the mechanism underlying the her1 mutation. Quantitative assessment of student learning and attitudes demonstrate that this lab achieves the desired goals. 相似文献

The fact that every organism possesses an endogenous biological clock can be established when they are made to live in conditions of timelessness. How do human beings perform under such conditions? Human isolation facilities provide such timeless environments where human beings can live comfortably while performing various bodily activities as dictated by their endogenous clock. In this article, I narrate my personal experience in the isolation facility at Madurai Kamaraj University. My stay (on three occasions) has led to the important finding that the menstrual cycle in a human female is not coupled to the sleep-wake cycle. I also describe how such experiments can be useful in the context of shift-working, jet-lag and space studies. 相似文献

Nursing homes, assisted living facilities and home-care organizations, use web sites to describe their services to potential consumers. This virtual ethnographic study developed models representing how potential consumers may understand this information using data from web sites of 69 long-term-care providers. The content of long-term-care web sites can be understood based on common concepts such as services provided, quality of life, autonomy, values, and goals. However, the use of a human ecosystems organizing framework results in systemic, contextualized, in-depth, and useful models for understanding and highlighting similarities and differences across the three forms of long-term care. This research has implications for those interested in long-term care and for researchers organizing qualitative data in ethnographic research. 相似文献

More organizational leaders are recognizing that their greatest competitive advantage is the knowledge base of their employees and for organizations to thrive knowledge management (KM) systems need to be in place that encourage the natural interplay and flow of tacit and explicit knowledge. Approaching KM through the lens of the knowledge life cycle allows for the design and development of KM solutions that are systemic and address the dynamic nature of organizational knowledge. In this paper we provide a review of the literature regarding how organizational knowledge may be studied and propose a methodological framework for investigating the knowledge life cycle. To illustrate the framework we present a recent case study in which it was successfully used. This framework is intended to be useful to learning and performance improvement professionals who work in organizational KM as well as to researchers who wish to conduct further research in this area. 相似文献

Education has uses in every stage of the life cycle. For the most effective adult education, or lifelong education, it is useful to keep in mind two aspects—the instrumental and the expressive. Certain of the developmental tasks of adulthood require an instrumental kind of education, while other tasks are better assisted through expressive forms of education. The amount of time devoted by adults to education drops off after the age of 60, but it seems likely that participation in continuing education by people over 60 will increase during the remainder of the century, partly because people are now getting more formal education in their youth, and this predisposes them to continuation in the pursuit of lifelong learning. 相似文献
