Abstract “Horizon” is the integrated library system marketed by Ameritech Library Services. The cataloging and authority control module of this system is a mixture of strengths and weaknesses. The MARC editor is inefficient for use in environments where high productivity is required but will be replaced with a significantly improved editor in the near future. Simultaneous import of MARC records by multiple users is problematic. Bibliographic headings are stored in the form of separate authority records, an approach that offers advantages but also presents significant problems. The flexibility of non-MARC edit forms is a major plus. 相似文献

In 2015, the Cataloging and Metadata Services department of Rice University's Fondren Library developed a process to reconcile four years of authority headings against an internally developed thesaurus. With a goal of immediate cleanup as well as an ongoing maintenance procedure, staff developed a “hack” of OpenRefine's normal Reconciliation function that ultimately yielded 99.6% authority reconciliation and a stable process for monthly data verification. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This article illustrates the collaboration of three entities- the library, its online system and the authority service vendor-to achieve online authority control in a medium-sized academic library efficiently and cost-effectively. The authority service vendor checks and revises (as needed) the headings of the library's new bibliographic records, providing new authority records for them. Through a separate notification service, the vendor also provides revised authority records for the existing authority file, alerting the library when in-house online maintenance is needed. In this online environment, authority records and bibliographic records are maintained automatically by the vendor authority service. Thus, using various authority heading reports which can be generated by the local online system in conjunction with the notification service, the library concentrates its authority work on the elimination or correction of obsolete headings. The authority vendor services are effective and reduce the cost of maintaining the online catalog. Ultimately, accurate standardized headings enhance the ease and effectiveness of online searching and retrieval for all who consult the library's catalog. 相似文献

Lower DVD costs and increased patron demand have led to more video recordings in library catalogs. With long lists of cast and crew, these catalog records are more detailed than many books. For institutions requiring authorized name headings, both personal and corporate, heavily detailed catalog records for video recordings can be burdensome. Not all libraries that contribute original cataloging records to utilities such as OCLC are authorized to create corresponding authority records. A recent survey asked a sample of catalog librarians of video recordings in different types of libraries about their viewpoints and workflows in the context of authority control. 相似文献

ABSTRACT We developed a project utilizing the local form/genre heading, “property data,” and specific subheadings to help chemists, engineers, and those librarians assisting them to more easily locate library resources containing chemical and physical properties of substances. This article describes the project and examines possibilities for improving access to physical sciences literature in relation to Library of Congress Subject Headings and ongoing developments in authority records for form/genre terms. [目的/意义]名称规范档在书目数据库中对书目记录的检索点进行规范化校验,通过实现标目的一致性,达到检索效率提升、目录汇集的目的。分析国外名称规范档的最新研究进展及实践,以期为中文名称规范档的发展研究提供借鉴。[方法/过程]通过对当前中文名称规范档建设存在的问题进行客观分析,结合国外名称规范档的研究进展及实践,提出中文名称规范档的建设发展方向。[结果/结论]当前中文名称规范档的建设存在着数据规模小、数据完全性差、数据共享性低问题,从国外名称规范档的发展看出,其不再局限于图书馆内部建设,开始向合作共建共享发展,规范数据不再面向OPAC系统,向开放互联发展。因此中文名称规范档的建设可从共建共享、构建新模型与规则、提升质量方面着手,发挥中文名称规范档在网络环境下的规范控制作用。 相似文献

ABSTRACT The Fresnes public library chose to enhance its bibliographic catalog by loading the complete backfile and regular updates of the BNF authority files. This unique solution allows them to put an end to local cataloging (notably subject assignment and the maintenance of the subject index) and to considerably reduce the “cost per title cataloged” based on the formula proposed by ISO Standard 11620: Information and Documentation—Library Performance Indicators. The authority files improve the quality of online services: they reduce the number of unsuccessful searches, reduce aberrant responses and allow for numerous OPAC possibilities; they offer library staff a valuable aid in their mission of assisting the public; they facilitate and improve the tasks of collection development and management. The new information system anticipated for the opening of the new library in March will give the authority files a larger role. Beyond assisting the simple catalog search, the authority files will function as a search engine for the whole network. The CD-ROM and DVD-ROM readers, and a selected number of Internet sites will, in fact, link to the authority files (notably subject and corporate author files) by the authority record number, using the same headings as in the library catalog. 相似文献

AbstractThe creation and the maintenance of three (name, title and subject headings) authority files in the Central Library of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, is discussed. The reasons for establishing bilingual (Greek and English) authority files are explained, and the necessary modifications of the AACR2 Rules, which were imperative for the establishment of bilingual headings in the authority files, are represented. 随着规范控制工作的国际化,国际名称规范文档共建共享成为必然趋势。本文对影响名称规范文档共享的要素——名称规范文档遵循的编目规则、采用的描述格式和数据元素构成的差异进行分析,基于虚拟国际规范文档(VIAF)匹配思路,通过中国高等教育文献保障系统管理中心(CALIS)、香港中文名称规范数据库(HKCAN)和VIAF的数据匹配实验,分析当前国内规范文档存在的问题:名称规范文档记录不全,检索结果输出不按相关度排列,国内各机构对中国人名的拼音标目不规范。本文在控制规则、附加信息、数据模型等方面提出相应对策,以提高文档的共享效率,希望能为推动我国规范控制工作的国际化进程提供参考。图2。表4。参考文献19。 相似文献

Increasing amounts of time and expense required to provide authority control for OPACS has stimulated interest in the automated generation of name authority records. At the same time, national cooperative cataloging programs such as NACO are seeking participants on a wider scale. A better understanding of the nature of authority records, the possibilities and limitations of the machine creation, and the resources needed for institutions to participate in national programs is needed to assist decision making in these areas. THe 670 field is used to justify the form and content of established headings and their cross references. The 670 fields from national level name authority records pertaining to the subject area of the Catholic Church were examined. Information was sought on the number of 670s per record, on the types of work cited, and on the works themselves. Findings indicate that considerable difference exist among the categories of authority records, with some (modern personal names and uniform titles) being more amenable to machine generation. It was also possible to tentatively identify a core reference for authority work in a subject area. 相似文献

In 2005/2006, the authors evaluated cataloging and physical processing supplied through the University of Arkansas Libraries' shelf-ready contract with YBP Library Services and PromptCat. The authors examined 298 titles from three samples, with emphasis placed on series headings. Results showed that while 99.33% of titles received records and 99.66% of records received correctly matched their corresponding books, 27.05% of records exhibited errors affecting catalog access, and records for 38.59% of titles needed modification. Moreover, 32.11% of series headings required further attention to comply with local authority procedures. This study should prove useful to other libraries contemplating a shelf-ready contract and the level of quality control they wish to exercise. 相似文献
