If students of science are to have more career options in the future, the people who hire and work with them are going to have to know more science and more about what scientists do. That's one of the conclusions of a recent study of the perceptions and realities that young and mid-career physical scientists are having to cope with in a post-cold war environment. It's also the conclusion of a survey of CEO's from 500 of the Fortune 1000 companies in the U.S, undertaken in September and October 1995 by the Johnson School of Management at Cornell. Corporations are becoming more and more concerned about science and technological illiteracy on the part of their managers.Sheila Tobias is not a scientist or a mathematician, but the author of seven books on science and mathematics education. Her most recent, in collaboration with policy analyst Daryl Chubin and physicist Kevin Aylesworth, is Rethinking Science as a Career: Perceptions and Realities in the Physical Sciences, available from Research Corporation, 101 N. In 1977 more than 2500 Israeli student‐teacher applicants were tested on a variety of cognitive and affective measures. Based on multivariate analytical techniques, the results showed three selection phases: 1. Self‐selection by the potential teacher for the vocation, characterized by a conservative modal personality. 2. Admission by the teacher‐training program, when the more able students are accepted. 3. Election, once admitted, to undergo the course of instruction. This phase cancels cognitive ability differences apparent in the admission phase; and elevates personality traits of a conforming and a conservative type, as the most discriminatory modality between future teachers and those who elected not to become teachers. As a part of our interest in biologically active germacranolides from the genus Carpesium (Compositae), we have investigated the constituents of Carpesium cernuum. This paper reports the isolation and structural elucidation of a new germacranolide, cernolide A (Compound 1), from the herb. The structure of Compound 1 was determined as 2α,3β-dihydroxy-9-angeloxygermacra-4-en-6,12-olide on the basis of spectral evidence. The skeleton of Compound 1 was elucidation by IR, MS, 1H and 13C NMR, COSY, HMQC and HMBC experiments. The stereochemistry of Compound 1 was deduced by ROESY spectral data. Finally, the procedures of extraction and isolation were described in detail. 相似文献
