Little responding develops to a conditioned stimulus (CS) that is placed in a random relation to an unconditioned stimulus (US). However, if the USs not preceded by that CS are themselves signaled by another stimulus, then the CS does come to elicit responding. This result has been attributed (e.g., by Durlach, 1983) to the signal’s blocking of conditioning to background cues that otherwise would prevent conditioning of the CS. However, Goddard and Jenkins (1987) have suggested the alternative that signaling the USs promotes responding due to the adventitious creation of periods of signaled nonreinforcement. Two experiments were conducted to assess this alternative, involving an autoshaping preparation in pigeons. In Experiment 1, little responding to a keylight CS presented in a random relation to a food US occurred, despite the explicit presentation of a discrete noise signaling periods of no food in the intertrial interval (ITI). Experiment 2 was designed to replicate the procedure of Goddard and Jenkins, in which an auditory stimulus extended throughout the ITI of a random schedule, terminating only prior to extra USs and during the CS. Contrary to their findings, little responding developed to the target CS. However, responding did develop when the sound-free period occurred only prior to the extra USs. These results offer little support for the hypothesis that signaled periods of nonreinforcement promote responding on random schedules. However, they are consistent with the view that signaling of ITI USs acts by preventing conditioning of potentially competitive background cues.  相似文献

Terry and Wagner (1975) have suggested that short-term retention of information about an event is enhanced if the occurrence of the event is surprising. To investigate this idea, we trained two groups of pigeons in a preparatory-releaser procedure in which half the trials started with the presentation of food (the preparatory event). The preparatory food presensation was signaled by an 8-sec white keylight in the signaled, but not in the unsignaled, group. After a retention interval, varying between 2 and 32 sec, the releaser stimulus (CSR), a red keylight, was presented for 8 sec in the absence of any reinforcement. The remaining trials were initiated by the presentation of CSR, and the first peck occurring 8 sec after the onset of CSR was reinforced by food. The preparatory event controlled responding to CSR at the short retention interval, with the level of control declining systematically with increasing retention intervals. On probe test trials, the presentation of the preparatory food event was preceded by a stimulus that had previously been paired (CS+) or unpaired with food (CS?). Discriminative responding to CSr was better following CS? than following CS+ in the unsignaled, but not the signaled, group. These results suggest that the enhanced retention following surprising preparatory events reflects a generalization decrement induced by changing the signaling conditions between training and testing.  相似文献

Pigeons were given successive discrimination training in which pecking during a choice period when the key was white was either reinforced or not, depending upon the prior presence or absence of a discriminative stimulus, which was a two-element serial compound. The compound consisted of a keylight and food, with food presented second or first in a forward or backward pairing for different groups of pigeons. In Experiment 1, the sequence was an S+ indicating reinforced trials, while in Experiment 2, the sequence was an S? indicating nonreinforced trials. Following acquisition of discriminated operant behavior, a sequence generalization test was administered during which all possible orders of the two stimuli were presented on test trials prior to the onset of the choice period. The results showed that food overshadowed stimulus control by the color of the light on the key on the sequence-generalization test, independently of whether food was presented first or second during training and independently of whether food was associated with reinforcement or nonreinforcement. The similarity of results for the two experiments suggests that overshadowing occurs independently of whether the compound is a discriminative stimulus for reinforcement or nonreinforcement. Simultaneous presentation of elements of a compound stimulus is not necessary for overshadowing because the phenomenon was captured with sequentially presented stimuli.  相似文献

Three experiments investigated the effect of contextual and trial stimulus lighting conditions on keypeck autoshaping in pigeons. White illumination of a response key before food presentation readily produced keypecking in a brightly lit chamber but failed to do so in a chamber without house illumination (Experiments I and III). Keypecking in a darkened cubicle progressively increased and the facilitatory effect of a houselight decreased as the keylight stimulus was varied from a color change (Experiment II) to a feature change (Experiment III). These findings support a “cue localization” hypothesis of autoshaping. according to which reinforcement signals select specific behaviors for expression and direct these behaviors toward the source of stimulation. This account was extended to superstitious and operant conditioning situations.  相似文献

Pigeons were trained on a variant of the autoshaping procedure in which a keylight stimulus of increasing brightness was used to signal the passing of a 30-sec interfood interval (IFI). Key-pecking developed in all subjects within the first session (65 trials). Within trials, pecking began midway through the IFI, increased throughout the remainder, and decreased just before food delivery. Other behavioral stereotypies were also recorded: Low light levels were associated with a retreat to the rear of the test chamber, and medium light levels (during the midportion of the IFI) were associated with high rates of pacing toward and away from the food source. Probe trials revealed that pecking, pacing, and retreat were all under strong stimulus control; that is, when the light was held constant at its lowest or highest brightness, or when the brightness ramp was presented in reverse order, the behavior pattern almost invariably remained tied to stimulus brightness. Results are discussed in terms of associative and nonassociative sources of the form and sequential characteristics of the behavior.  相似文献

An autoshaping paradigm with pigeon subjects was used to study two-types-of modulation: facilitation and inhibition. In each paradigm, a diffuse stimulus signaled when a keylight would be reinforced. Transfer of that diffuse stimulus to a different keylight was assessed after the response-evoking power of the original keylight had been altered in the presence of a different modulator. That alteration of the original target produced a specific change in the transfer of modulators trained with that target. The results are interpreted as suggesting that transfer to another target stimulus is partly mediated by the association of the original target with the reinforcer. They are inconsistent with at least one version of a configurai cue interpretation.  相似文献

In three experiments, we sought evidence for the acquired equivalence of cues in pigeons trained in an autoshaping paradigm. In Experiment 1, presentations of each of a pair of cues (different keylight stimuli) preceded a common consequence (a different keylight stimulus). The pattern of response then established by further training given to one member of the pair was found to generalize preferentially to the other, demonstrating equivalence between cues that had shared a common consequence. The same test procedure was used in Experiment 2, but with a training procedure in which each cue of a pair was preceded by a given stimulus. This too resulted in enhanced generalization between members of the pair, showing that equivalence can be established when cues have been experienced along with a common antecedent. Both training procedures were combined in Experiment 3 to confirm the reliability of the effects previously obtained. The discussion is focused on ways in which the associative explanation offered for cases of equivalence mediated by a common consequence might be extended to accommodate equivalence mediated by a common antecedent.  相似文献

In two experiments, pigeons were exposed to an autoshaping procedure in which a keylight was followed by food under delay or trace conditions, while measures were taken of keypecking and time spent near the key. In Experiment 1, the birds in the trace group spent less time near the key than did the delay birds. Moreover, the trace birds exhibited a pattern of withdrawal from the key during the trial. In Experiment 2, visual observations of the birds’ location and latencies to eat both indicated that the trace birds’ withdrawal from the conditioned stimulus was accompanied by goal tracking. The difference in performance between the delay and trace conditions was taken as evidence that a trace stimulus may exert control over behavior as an occasion setter.  相似文献

A second-order autoshaping procedure was used to examine the effects of three variables on the amount of information that could be learned about the stimulus properties of a reinforcer. All three experiments paired several keylight S2s with different keylight S1s and then carried out discriminative autoshaping with those S1s. Learning about the stimulus properties of S1 was inferred from changes in the response to its paired S2 when that S1 was changed in value. The sensitivity of S2 to changes in S1 was investigated as a function of number of S2-S1 pairings (Experiment 1), partial reinforcement (Experiment 2), and temporal distance between S2 and S1 (Experiment 3). Each experiment found evidence of a selective change in responding to an S2 as a function of the treatment of its S1. However, the amount of that change was not affected by any of the three variables studied. Those results imply that, within the ranges used here, none of these variables changes the degree of learning about the stimulus properties of a reinforcer.  相似文献

Three experiments using rats examined whether a signal for the nonreinforcement of an instrumental response (S-) provided information about the identity of the omitted outcome. In all three experiments, one stimulus was established as a signal for the nonreinforcement of a response that earned food pellets and another stimulus signaled the nonreinforcement of a response that earned liquid sucrose. Experiment 1 found that each S-suppressed another instrumental response trained with the same outcome significantly more than a response trained with a different outcome. Using a variant of this transfer design, Experiment 2 demonstrated that an S- was slower to develop discriminative control over a new response reinforced in its presence with the same outcome compared with an outcome different from the one whose omission-the S- had previously signaled. Experiment 3 examined transfer of the S- stimuli to a response trained with two outcomes, one of which had subsequently been devalued. Performance of this response significantly increased in the presence of a signal for the omission of the devalued outcome, but decreased in the presence of a signal for the omission of the valued outcome. These results suggest that S-s do provide information about the identity of omitted response-contingent outcomes.  相似文献

Suppression of operant responding during a conditioned stimulus (CS) was studied in two procedures. In both procedures, operant leverpressing was maintained by a variable-interval 1-min food-delivery schedule, and insertion of a second lever served as the CS. In the first procedure, autoshaping, food followed each CS presentation irrespective of a subject’s behavior during the CS. In the second procedure, omission training, contact with the CS canceled the delivery of food scheduled for the end of that CS. In the first experiment, subjects were exposed to omission training followed by autoshaping; these procedures were reversed in the second experiment. In each experiment, the omission contingency resulted in fewer CS contacts and less suppression of operant responding during the CS than did autoshaping. These differences were more notable in subjects receiving the sequence autoshaping→omission training (Experiment 2). Direct observations in Experiment 2 revealed that, for subjects that were contacting the CS frequently when the omission contingency was introduced, reductions in signal contacts were accompanied by redistributions of behavior. The form of these redistributions depended upon behavior allocation at the time the omission contingency was imposed.  相似文献

The ability of visual CSs previously paired with flavored substances to substitute for those substances as conditional discriminative cues was examined in two Pavlovian appetitive conditioning experiments using rat subjects. In Experiment 1, a visual stimulus was first paired with the delivery of a sucrose solution. Then the rats were trained in conditional discrimination tasks in which sucrose delivery alone served as a conditional cue signaling whether or not a subsequent tone would be reinforced with food pellets. Subjects rapidly acquired discriminative performance to the tones, especially in a feature-negative condition in which sucrose delivery signaled when the tone would not be reinforced. In a subsequent test in which neither food nor sucrose was delivered, presentation of the visual CS also controlled discriminative performance to subsequently presented tones. Experiment 2 showed the ability of a visual CS to substitute for a flavored substance as a conditional cue to be highly stimulus specific. Experiment 2 also showed that a flavored substance was less effective as a conditional cue when it was made to be expected by preceding it with a previously associated visual signal than when it was made to be surprising by preceding it with a visual stimulus signaling another flavored liquid. These results indicate that CS-evoked representations of events can substitute for those events themselves in the control of previously established conditional discrimination performance.  相似文献

In two experiments, behavioral stereotypies elicited by scheduled presentations of food and water were compared. In Experiment 1, pigeons were exposed to a fixed-time 30-sec (FT 30-sec) schedule of food or water deliveries with a brightening keylight stimulus signaling time to the unconditioned stimulus (UCS) on each trial. Food and water presentations both produced terminal autoshaped keypecking that was similarly distributed in the trial but differed in response topography and persistence. Locomotor interim behavior was different in the two motivational conditions: With food presentations, it consisted of a “retreat” to the rear of the chamber after UCS termination, followed by “pacing” in the midportion of trials. The water schedule produced very little locomotor activity with no regular distribution in the trial. Experiment 2, using a random-time 30-sec (RT 30-sec) schedule, showed that the differences in interim locomotor behavior persisted in the absence of temporal predictability of the UCS and the keypecking terminal response. The results are taken to support Timberlake’s (1983a) behavior-system theory.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted using an autoshaping procedure in pigeons to examine the conditions under which facilitation develops toB in anA? IBA+ paradigm. WhenB is a diffuse stimulus and A is a localized keylight, this paradigm results in B’s facilitating pecking at A. Prior inhibitory conditioning ofA promoted the development of this facilitation more successfully than did prior excitatory or control treatment of A. These results suggest that facilitation develops especially well when an inhibitory stimulus is reinforced in the presence of the diffuseB. That outcome is consistent with the view that facilitation involves the removal of inhibition.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to investigate functional similarities between “hunger CRs” of Konorski’s (1967) model of appetitive classical conditioning and sign-tracking behavior in rats. Konorski’s model predicts that hunger CRs will be facilitated (1) when a nonrein-forced stimulus similar to the reinforced CS is introduced, and (2) when some CS presentations are unexpectedly nonreinforced. In Experiment 1, hungry rats acquired a leverpress response to a retractable lever that was paired with response-independent food. Following this training, a second lever was introduced whose presentation was not followed by food. The effect of the presence of this second lever was to facilitate responding to the original lever. In Experiment 2, single-lever autoshaping training was followed by a shift from 100% pairing of the lever with food to only 50% of the lever presentations being followed by food. The introduction of partial reinforcement produced an immediate and durable increase in leverpressing. The findings of both experiments are consistent with predictions from Konorski’s model of classical conditioning if sign-tracking is considered as a “hunger CR.”  相似文献

Animals will perform an operant response to obtain food when abundant free food is available. These data have implications for current learning theories, especially in terms of the motivational variables associated with such behavior. The present paper reviews the literature and provides an analysis that suggests that responding for food in the presence of free food is importantly controlled by stimulus change attendant upon response-dependent food presentation. This apparent stimulus-reinforcer effect on behavior is compared to that observed in other areas of animal learning research that include preference between schedules of response-dependent and response-independent reinforcement, preference between schedules of signaled and unsignaled reinforcement, autoshaping and automaintenance, and self-reinforcement in animals.  相似文献

The acquisition and maintenance of signal-directed pecking was examined in week-old Leg-Horn chicks responding to a keylight stimulus paired with heat. In contrast with previous studies using pigeons with food as the US, both speed of acquisition and asymptotic level of keypecking were a direct function of US duration. Experiment 2 examined responding using a within-subject design to isolate the effects of trial spacing on performance during the immediate trial from the effects on performance during a following trial of fixed length. These comparisons revealed a significant effect of intertriai interval (ITI), with less responding after shorter intervals. The effect of different temporal spacing was apparent in responding on the immediate trial, but not on the following trial. These local ITI effects were better predicted by a recent autoshaping model based on relative waiting time (Jenkins, Barnes, & Barrera, 1981) than by a model based on relative US expectancy (Gibbons & Balsam, 1981). However, neither model predicted the effect of US duration. A reexamination of the US-duration literature suggested that the diversity of previous findings is consistent with the assumption that conditioned responding is an inverted U-shaped function of US duration.  相似文献

Pigeons were allowed to observe a stimulus signaling food (S+) by pecking one side key of a three-key chamber, or a stimulus signaling extinction (S?) by pecking the opposite side key. Components were 30 sec long and separated by 3-sec blackouts (after extinction periods) or 3-sec access to an illuminated food hopper (terminating food periods). Pigeons came to peck the S+ key almost exclusively. When food and extinction periods were presented in random order, the S+ key was pecked in nearly every component. But when the components alternated in abab fashion, the probability of an S+ keypeck during extinction decreased (after 3-sec access to food) while remaining high in food components (after 3-sec blackout). This suggested the development of trace stimulus control by the stimuli separating the components and that redundant stimuli would maintain observing when they signaled food. Results were discussed in terms of traditional notions of conditioned reinforcement and were not seen as supporting information theory explanations of observing behavior.  相似文献

Following sessions of free grain delivery, a transparent shield was placed over the magazine, which made food unavailable. Different groups of pigeons then “observed” positive, zero, or negative correlations between the keylight and inaccessible grain. Keypecks were rare in all groups. Next, the shield was removed, and a transfer-test was given in which all subjects were exposed to keylight presentations followed by available grain. The previously positive group pecked sooner and more frequently than the others. A second experiment, which yielded similar results, excluded the possibility that approaches to the keylight during the observation phase had mediated learning in the first experiment. These findings were discussed in relationship to operant and Pavlovian analyses of autoshaping.  相似文献

Pigeons were trained to step on a treadle to operate a grain hopper, under the control of an auditory stimulus. Subsequently, autoshaping consisted of pairing illumination of a response key with some of the subsequent tone presentations, reinforcement occurring only after a treadle response. One control group did not have a treadle or a treadle-response requirement. A second control group received random presentations of an illuminated key. Neither paired nor random key presentations had any effect on treadlepressing. However, the paired key groups showed acquisition of pecking to the key, while the random group did not. The data suggest that pecking in the autoshaping procedure is not profitably analyzed as part of an operant sequence and it indicates that autoshaping involves a structuring of response repertoires that may well be independent of the effects of contingent reinforcement and shaping. Autoshaping seems to be governed by empirical temporal laws akin to those of classical conditioning.
