The present research studies the impact of decompounding and two different word normalization methods, stemming and lemmatization,
on monolingual and bilingual retrieval. The languages in the monolingual runs are English, Finnish, German and Swedish. The
source language of the bilingual runs is English, and the target languages are Finnish, German and Swedish. In the monolingual
runs, retrieval in a lemmatized compound index gives almost as good results as retrieval in a decompounded index, but in the
bilingual runs differences are found: retrieval in a lemmatized decompounded index performs better than retrieval in a lemmatized
compound index. The reason for the poorer performance of indexes without decompounding in bilingual retrieval is the difference
between the source language and target languages: phrases are used in English, while compounds are used instead of phrases
in Finnish, German and Swedish. No remarkable performance differences could be found between stemming and lemmatization. 相似文献

ABSTRACTTestimony from colleagues in the cultural sector suggests that there is a common perception of leaders as authoritarian, infallible and invulnerable. However, developing leaders soon come to understand that good leaders often have an authenticity of their own. Being able to embrace authentic leadership in this way requires confidence. It involves accepting vulnerabilities, learning to be comfortable making decisions without all the information, and daring to risk potential failure as the best way to encourage creativity, innovation and learning. Given this dichotomy, is there a potential for the development of leadership in conservation? This paper explores the unique challenges we face as conservators in a changing sector. In it, I reconnect with professional experiences of my own and those I gained as the first conservation fellow on the Clore Leadership Programme as well as examining testimony from others in the profession and the wider cultural sector. The ideas generated are supported by literature from a variety of sources inside and outside the conservation field. Starting from what draws people to conservation in the very beginning and working through to the leadership of the profession, the paper identifies four main areas of challenge for conservation in a twenty-first-century creative economy. These are around a lack of diversity, a lack of confidence, the strength of voice and perception and issues around support, for our decision-making and for the profession as a whole. The paper concludes that a new vision for the future of conservation could not only help rebalance the diverging preventive and remedial specialisms but also be instrumental in the perception, interpretation and preservation of cultural heritage. If we expand our horizons, the bigger picture of heritage and what it can achieve for the society could be crucial to us not only changing but thriving in the modern world. 相似文献

The 1990's will see a rapid rate of change in many areas that will impact technology, the economy, and people. One specific area of impact will be the job search process. There will be more people changing jobs and careers. To conduct a successful job search, people need easy access to a variety of job search resources. Public libraries already play a key role in providing these vital resources. To accentuate this role, the idea of a partnership is presented between career planning and placement professionals and libraries. Together these two forces can effectively facililate the job search process. This extended role will lead public libraries to be a hub or center of extensive networking resources crucial for job seekers. Examples from Illinois public libraries with current job search programs, and one volunteer community-based program, will be featured. Text will revolve around the ideas presented during various job search programs, and quotations of professionals in the field. 相似文献

In this column, our contributors from Bulgaria and Turkey bring us a comparative study of mobile and information literacy among students at two universities in those countries. In addition to presenting perceptions of students around these literacy concepts, their research project also highlights growing trends in the use of distance education and web-based study materials. Use of dynamic links from subject-based finding aids to records for electronic resources in the OPAC is suggested as one method for by-passing the OPAC search interface, thus making the library's electronic resources more accessible. This method simplifies maintenance of links to electronic resources and aids instruction by providing a single, consistent access point to them. Results of a usage study from before and after this project was completed show a consistent, often dramatic increase in use of the library's electronic resources. 相似文献
