The quality of teachers’ knowledge about how people learn influences students’ learning outcomes. Similarly, the quality of
students’ knowledge about how they learn influences their engagement in self-regulated learning and consequently, their learning
achievement. There is a gap between research findings that support these two premises and teaching–learning practices in classrooms.
In this paper we describe attempts to reduce this gap. In Study 1 we surveyed early adolescent students’ cognitive and metacognitive
strategy use and demonstrated that students’ cognitive and metacognitive strategy knowledge has substantial room for improvement.
In Studies 2 and 3 we collaborated with teachers to embed explicit cognitive and metacognitive strategy instruction, using
learning protocols, into regular class lessons. Studies 2 and 3 showed that the learning protocols slipped readily into teachers’
typical lesson designs, scaffolded teachers’ delivery of strategy instruction, and scaffolded some students’ acquisition of
strategy knowledge, although progress was sometimes slow. Recommendations are presented for supporting teachers and students
to engage with cognitive and metacognitive strategy instruction. 相似文献

In the multilingual mathematics classroom, the assignment for teachers to scaffold students by means of instruction and guidance in order to facilitate language progress and learning for all is often emphasized. In Sweden, where mathematics education is characterized by a low level of teacher responsibility for students’ performance, this responsibility is in part passed on to students. However, research investigating the complexity of relations between mathematics teaching and learning in multilingual classrooms, as well as effect studies of mathematics teaching, often take the existence of teachers’ responsibility for offering specific content activities for granted. This study investigates the relations between different aspects of responsibility in mathematics teaching and students’ performance in the multilingual mathematics classroom. The relationship between different group compositions and how the responsibility is expressed is also investigated. Multilevel structural equation models using TIMSS 2003 data identified a substantial positive influence on mathematics achievement of teachers taking responsibility for students’ learning processes by organizing and offering a learning environment where the teacher actively and openly supports the students in their mathematics learning, and where the students also are active and learn mathematics themselves. A correlation was also revealed between group composition, in terms of students’ social and linguistic background, and how mathematics teaching was performed. This relationship indicates pedagogical segregation in Swedish mathematics education by teachers taking less responsibility for students’ learning processes in classes with a high proportion of students born abroad or a high proportion of students with low socio-economic status. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between teachers' reports on self-regulatory strategy use in mathematics instruction and individual motivational and affective factors. Two hundred and ninety-two Greek primary school teachers responded to two questionnaires assessing (a) the strategies they use themselves to plan, monitor and evaluate mathematics instruction and (b) the strategies they use to activate and enhance students' self-regulated learning in mathematics. Path analysis showed that teachers' self-regulation strategies both for their own teaching and for enhancing students' self-regulation in mathematics were predicted by their self-efficacy beliefs in teaching mathematics, the value they attribute to mathematics and their emotional commitment to their profession. Teachers' enjoyment of mathematics teaching did not directly predict their reported use of self-regulatory instructional strategies. The implications of the study are related to the development of teachers' training programmes in self-regulated instruction. 相似文献

Self-regulated learning has a positive effect on academic outcomes; however, little is known about whether and how teachers at various education levels promote it in their classes. Video-based classroom observations were conducted to assess primary and secondary school mathematics teachers’ direct and indirect promotion of self-regulated learning (SRL). Teachers’ implicit and explicit instruction of SRL strategies (direct promotion of SRL) and the learning environment they created (indirect promotion of SRL) were rated according to how conducive they were to self-regulation. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the secondary school teachers to gain insight into their subjective views on SRL. Although the teachers’ instructional practices could foster SRL, teachers spent little time explicitly teaching SRL strategies. Moreover, they taught mainly cognitive strategies and very few metacognitive strategies. These results were more pronounced at the primary level than at the secondary level. Primary school teachers provided learning environments conducive to self-regulation more often than secondary school teachers did. The interviews revealed that the teachers lacked knowledge about metacognition as an important component of SRL and were rather reluctant to promote it; however, most of them valued cognitive and motivational components of SRL. Primary and secondary school teachers need training to enhance their direct and indirect instruction of SRL. The challenge that we address concerns teachers’ shifts toward student-centered instruction. We report on a yearlong professional
development study in which two United States elementary school teachers engaged in a teaching experiment, as described by
Steffe and Thompson (in: Lesh and Kelly (eds) Research on design in mathematics and science education, 2000). The teaching
experiment involved close mathematical interactions with a pair of students after school, in the context of solving fractions
tasks. By conducting a teaching experiment, we anticipated that each teacher would have more opportunity to develop insight
into students’ mathematics. We also anticipated that these insights would influence the teachers’ classroom practice, even
without explicit support for such a shift. Indeed, the teachers found that they began asking more probing questions of their
students and spending more time listening to students’ explanations, but shifts to classroom practice were limited by constraining

A programme to enhance first-year college students’ self-regulated learning strategies is proposed and assessed in two samples,
one from the University of Oviedo (Spain) and the other from the University of Minho (Portugal). Each sample was divided into
two groups (experimental and control). The Spanish sample comprised 44 students in the experimental group and 40 in the control
group, whereas in the Portuguese sample, the number of students was 48 and 44, respectively. The narrative-based intervention
programme is organised around a set of fictional letters from a first-year college student in which he reports his own academic
experiences. Each letter focuses on a learning strategy as an opportunity to teach and enhance the students’ deep approaches
to learning and their self-regulated learning processes. In both samples, findings confirm the programme efficacy to teach
efficient learning strategies and to promote self-regulation. Implications for college students and for teaching are discussed. 相似文献

This paper aims to investigate students’ likes and dislikes of the teaching that they have experienced and its effects on
students’ perceptions of the learning environment, student learning and academic performance. The study compares a lecture-based
setting to a student-activating learning/teaching environment, considering both instructional and assessment practices. Data
(N=578) were collected using the Course Experience Questionnaire (Ramsden, 1991) and by means of a standardised test. While
lecture-taught students’ evaluations of the experienced teaching were generally focused and positive, students’ perceptions
of the activating methods varied widely and both extremely positive and negative opinions were present. Also the consequences
of these (dis)likes in instruction for student learning become clear. Moreover, a significant positive linear effect of students’
(dis)likes in instruction on students’ perceptions of the learning environment (except for appropriate assessment), their
learning and their performance was found. This way, the results pinpoint the central role of teaching methods for students’
learning and caution against detrimental consequences of students’ negative appraisal of the teaching methods that they experience.
A matching strategy between a student’s teaching tastes and the teacher’s instructional interventions provides the best educational

The study identified two dimensions of teacher self-efficacy and practices and five dimensions of students’ mathematics self-efficacy
and sought to determine the extent to which teacher characteristics and practices can enhance secondary school students’ self-efficacy.
Data were collected from 13,173 students in 193 teachers’ classrooms from 141 schools in the 10 districts of Lake Victoria
Region of Kenya. Two-level hierarchical linear model revealed that teachers’ frequent use of mathematics homework, their level
of interest and enjoyment of mathematics, as well as their ability and competence in teaching mathematics were found to play
a key role in promoting students’ mathematics self-efficacy. Teachers’ ability and competence in teaching were also found
to be effective in narrowing the gender gap in students’ self-confidence and competence in mathematics. The study recommends
that teacher training colleges emphasize such teacher practices and values in order to enhance students’ mathematics self-efficacy,
reduce their level of anxiety and fear of mathematics, and consequently, enhance their achievement in mathematics. Professional
development opportunities should also be made available to in-service teachers to continually update their knowledge and skills
and develop new strategies for teacher effectiveness. 相似文献

A professional learning program for teachers of junior secondary mathematics regarding the content and pedagogy of senior
secondary mathematics is the context for this study of teachers’ mathematical and pedagogical knowledge. The analysis of teachers’
reflections on their learning explored teachers’ understanding of mathematical connections and their appreciation of mathematical
structure. The findings indicate that a professional learning program about senior secondary mathematics can enable practicing
teachers to deepen and broaden their knowledge for teaching junior secondary mathematics and develop their practice to support
their students’ present and future learning of mathematics. Further research is needed about professional learning approaches
and tasks that may enable teachers to imbed and develop awareness of structure in their practice. 相似文献

The current study sought to understand the relationship between peer discussions and self-regulated learning. Eighty-eight
first year high school students answered questions from the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire and reported the
perceived frequency of discussions with peers both inside and outside of the classroom regarding self-regulated learning.
Results suggest that differences exist between the frequency of self-regulation discussions with peers from inside and outside
of the classroom, especially for discussions concerning motivation. Discussions with peers outside of class were related more
closely to students’ reported self-regulated learning than discussion with peers inside of class. In addition, peer groups
with higher average levels of self-regulated learning discussions had individual members with high reported self-regulated
learning. The study’s results also highlight the need for further research on the mechanisms by which peer discussions may
relate to students’ self-regulated learning. 相似文献

This article examines a model of professional development called “video clubs” in which teachers watch and discuss excerpts
of videos from their classrooms. We investigate how participation in a video club influences teachers’ thinking and practice
by exploring three related contexts: (a) teachers’ comments during video-club meetings, (b) teachers’ self-reports of the
effects of the video club, and (c) teachers’ instruction across the year. Data analysis revealed changes in all three contexts.
In the video-club meetings, teachers paid increased attention to student mathematical thinking over the course of the year.
In interviews, teachers reported having learned about students’ mathematical thinking, about the importance of attending to
student ideas during instruction, and about their school’s mathematics curriculum. Finally, shifts were also uncovered in
the teachers’ instruction. By the end of the year, teachers increasingly made space for student thinking to emerge in the
classroom, probed students’ underlying understandings, and learned from their students while teaching. 相似文献

In this study, the author implemented a problem-based learning (PBL) experience that allowed students in an advanced science
methodology course to explore differentiated instruction. Through working systematically in small, collaborative groups, students
explored the nature of differentiated instruction. The objective of the study was to examine pre-service teachers’ developing
conceptions of differentiated instruction (DI) as a way to teach for diversity. The author adopted action research as a strategy
to explore students’ perceptions of DI in the context of science teaching and learning. Several data collection methods and
sources were adopted in the study, including student-generated products, student interviews, classroom observation, and journal
writing. Outcomes report on students’ perceptions of both the potential and challenges associated with adopting a DI approach

This study of middle-school students in California focused on the effectiveness of using innovative teaching strategies for
enhancing the classroom environment, students’ attitudes and conceptual development. A sample of 661 students from 22 classrooms
in four inner city schools completed modified forms of the Constructivist Learning Environment Survey (CLES), What Is Happening
In this Class? (WIHIC) questionnaire and Test of Mathematics Related Attitudes (TOMRA). Data analyses supported the factor
structure, internal consistency reliability, discriminant validity and the ability to distinguish between different classes
for these questionnaires when used with middle-school mathematics students in California. The effectiveness of the innovative
instructional strategy was evaluated in terms of classroom environment and attitudes to mathematics for the whole sample,
as well as for mathematics achievement for a subgroup of 101 students. A comparison of an experimental group which experienced
the innovative strategy with a control group supported the efficacy of the innovative teaching methods in terms of learning
environment, attitudes and mathematics concept development. Also associations were found between perceptions of classroom
learning environment and students’ attitudes to mathematics and conceptual development. 相似文献

Current reform efforts call for an emphasis on the use of representation in the mathematics classroom across levels and topics.
The aim of the study was to examine teachers’ conceptions of representation as a process in doing mathematics, and their perspectives
on the role of representations in the teaching and learning of mathematics at the middle-school level. Interviews with middle
school mathematics teachers suggest that teachers use representations in varied ways in their own mathematical work and have
developed working definitions of the term primarily as a product in problem solving. However, teachers’ conception of representation
as a process and a mathematical practice appears to be less developed, and, as a result, representations may have a peripheral
role in their instruction as well. Further, the data suggested that representation is viewed as a topic of study rather than
as a general process, and as a goal for the learning of only a minority of the students—the high-performing ones. Implications

In this study we compare university teachers’ and first-year students’ conceptions of teaching and learning at the Faculty
of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The conceptions were analysed using data from open-ended questionnaires. The results
showed that at the beginning of studies the gap between teachers’ and students’ conceptions of teaching and learning is substantial.
This finding has important implications for the educational process. In order to enhance successful studying from the beginning
of students’ university careers, it is important for teachers to become aware of the differences between students’ and teachers’

Culturally responsive science teaching is using knowledge about the culture and life experiences of students to structure
learning that is conducive to their needs. Understanding what teachers need to prepare them to be culturally responsive is
a matter of continuous debate. As the focus of multicultural education ventures farther away from its roots, advocating the
civil rights of historically oppressed groups, concerns about the gravity of racial inequity on schooling continues. How will
this shift in focus influence teachers’ capacity to accommodate students’ needs resulting from racial inequities in this society,
particularly African American students? What knowledge is essential to their effectiveness? This qualitative study examined
the instructional practices of two effective middle school science teachers deemed culturally responsive by their administrator
on the basis of classroom observations, students’ responses and standardized assessment results. Both teachers’ classrooms
consisted primarily of African American students. Grounded theory was used to analyze the teachers’ beliefs and practices
in order to identify existing commonalties. Critical race theory was used to identify whether there was any influence of the
students’ racial identities on the teachers’ beliefs and practices. The analysis reveals that the teachers’ beliefs and practices
were informed by their critical awareness of social constraints imposed upon their African American students’ identities.
These findings communicate the significance of sociocultural awareness to informing the teachers’ instruction, as well as
their strategies for managing the varying dynamics occurring in their classrooms. It can be deduced from the findings that
an understanding of racial inequities is crucial to the development of sociocultural awareness, and is the foundation for
the culturally responsive dispositions and practices of these middle school science teachers. 相似文献
