Many academic libraries have liaison programs as a means of building relevant and useful library collections and to promote library resources to campus users. Librarians have long served as liaisons without the benefit of much data to guide decisions. In this age of library budget cuts, librarians need to make every dollar count. What collection and use data help liaisons build a quality monograph collection that better meets the needs of library users? This article offers some ideas for providing the data needed by liaisons for more informed decision making and collection management and, ultimately, for ensuring that library materials purchased are needed and used.  相似文献

Many academic libraries have traditionally used complicated budget allocation models to inform funding for materials purchased in support of curriculum. When these formulas are applied, librarians usually temper the results with historical spending patterns. A small university library found that historical spending patterns can be used for budget allocation, yielding allocations similar to those derived from a complex formula. As part of the collection evaluation procedure described, the effectiveness of historical data allocations should be assessed annually by checking use of ordered materials. The effectiveness of allocations also can be supported by the use of proportional use statistics for departmental subject areas. The procedures and practices described in this article would be useful for university/college libraries of similar size to the Stetson University library, the library described in the article.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 现代风险社会对图书馆行业发展及其管理带来了严峻的挑战,传统的图书馆风险管理模式已不适应当前图书馆的发展,亟需探索新的风险治理框架。[方法/过程] 分析图书馆风险治理研究与实践过程中存在的概念界定不清晰、研究方法滞后、管理主体单一等不足。在风险社会理论及治理理论与方法的指导下,以大数据驱动为视角,提出图书馆风险治理的内涵,并分析图书馆风险治理的大数据应用需求、治理框架构建以及在此治理框架下图书馆风险治理内容、治理流程。[结果/结论] 针对图书馆领域存在的实体性风险(建筑、公共场所、自然灾害)、具体业务发展中的风险(资源建设、服务创新、技术应用与管理)以及外界环境(社会、技术、政策等的发展)所带来的行业风险,大数据分析能够有效地识别、预测、治理所面临的风险,为图书馆风险治理提供有效的技术工具。  相似文献

Each of the many materials budget allocation formulas developed and implemented by academic libraries is unique in terms of the variables which are included as well as the relative weighting applied to each variable. This study quantitatively compares how the differences in the composition of seven such formulas affect allocations of monograph and serials budgets by applying the formulas to a single test case, a small undergraduate library. Comparisons are made of the major discipline groups (Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science and Technology) as well as at the departmental level (sciences). Despite considerable differences in the construction of these formulas, fairly consistent outcomes are predicted. Coefficients of variation for the means of the seven formula allocations for major discipline groups range from 5.0% to 10.8%. Formulas that include a “library usage” variable do not yield allocations significantly different from those that exclude this variable. The means of formula allocations calculated for four science subjects agree with allocations derived from recent survey data for library spending in these areas to within one standard deviation. It is concluded that there is a considerable degree of similarity in the way allocation formulas function in practice.  相似文献

The paper discusses the impact of zero-based budgeting on the budget allocation process at the University of Hong Kong Libraries (HKUL). The challenges and strategies to optimize the collections budget in reallocating resources from print to electronic publication within an environment of inflationary increases and reduced funding increases are addressed. An examination into HKUL's past and current practices compares and contrasts the use of different budget allocation methodologies. A recent modified zero-based budget review has provided opportunities for faculty participation with the result of an effective approach in aligning collections budget with changing program needs.  相似文献

Microforms emerged as a major means of acquiring library resources during the '60s, and libraries acquired a large number of titles in this format. The management of these materials was frequently neglected, however. Further growth in the '70s increased the need for their control. The development and growth of the University of Oklahoma Libraries Microforms Area is described, and reasons for managerial decisions are provided. Construction of a new building led library personnel to design a new Microforms Area with a user-friendly atmosphere. This paper discusses collection management in Australian academic libraries. The author's sabbatical project was interviewing over 30 academic librarians in October/November of 1992 in eight of the largest research university libraries in Australia. These librarians gave their opinions on selection, acquisition, assessment, budget allocation, cooperative arrangements, and resource sharing. This paper also explores the recent changes in the higher education system in Australia and its impact on Australian universities and libraries, as well as the part Australia's distance from suppliers plays in procurement of materials.  相似文献

Chinese libraries, from academic to public, are undergoing or preparing for transformation, to meet users' ever changing needs and expectations in the new social, economic, and technological environment. However, there are many factors deeply embedded in the process which may cause potential risks for the transformation. This paper has surveyed the perceptions of library professionals on such risks, and proposes 40 possible risk indicators (RIs) which comprehensively cover the entire life cycle of library transformation. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and multi-dimensional analysis have been used to categorize risks into different types and dimensions. It reveals that library professionals are aware of potential risks, especially the ones from inside the field. Their awareness is positively affected by their current positions in the profession. In general, they are likely to overlook some types of potential risks such as the ones from the leadership, originating outside the library community, or involving long-term uncertainty. The authors suggest library practitioners should be fully aware of the potential risks and their dynamic nature, and should take the opportunity to promote leadership and management in the process of transformation, and to cooperate with parties outside of the library community, thus making the library transformation rational and successful.  相似文献

As it becomes increasingly difficult to demonstrate the worth of the library to the academic community, gate counts and usage statistics are no longer enough. Showing the impact the library has on the community requires planning new services with outcome measurement from the start. This article outlines a marketing strategy for launching a faculty book delivery service at the University of Central Florida's John C. Hitt Library using Fisher and Pride's (2006) Blueprint for Your Library Marketing Plan. It includes a review of relevant literature on marketing delivery services, service and marketing goals and outcomes, target audiences, marketing messages, message delivery strategies, marketing budget, and management of staff responsibilities. This article is the second in a series of three articles that together make up an entire project planning and management document that is based on Rhea Rubin's (2006) Outcome Measurement model. Perception can be everything. As librarians consider the ever-changing nature of the library's role on campus, they may want to adopt a philosophical approach to restructuring the traditional library materials budget from the perspective of perception rather than from the perspective of cost-cutting, creating staff efficiencies, or even collection development. By looking at the role faculty play in building the library's collection, conclusions can be formed about what the library's budget structure and budgetary interaction with faculty convey about the library's priorities as an institution and with regard to its role within the campus community as a whole.  相似文献
