ABSTRACT

This study investigates the role of automated scoring and feedback in supporting students’ construction of written scientific arguments while learning about factors that affect climate change in the classroom. The automated scoring and feedback technology was integrated into an online module. Students’ written scientific argumentation occurred when they responded to structured argumentation prompts. After submitting the open-ended responses, students received scores generated by a scoring engine and written feedback associated with the scores in real-time. Using the log data that recorded argumentation scores as well as argument submission and revisions activities, we answer three research questions. First, how students behaved after receiving the feedback; second, whether and how students’ revisions improved their argumentation scores; and third, did item difficulties shift with the availability of the automated feedback. Results showed that the majority of students (77%) made revisions after receiving the feedback, and students with higher initial scores were more likely to revise their responses. Students who revised had significantly higher final scores than those who did not, and each revision was associated with an average increase of 0.55 on the final scores. Analysis on item difficulty shifts showed that written scientific argumentation became easier after students used the automated feedback.  相似文献

In this digital ITEMS module, Dr. Jue Wang and Dr. George Engelhard Jr. describe the Rasch measurement framework for the construction and evaluation of new measures and scales. From a theoretical perspective, they discuss the historical and philosophical perspectives on measurement with a focus on Rasch's concept of specific objectivity and invariant measurement. Specifically, they introduce the origins of Rasch measurement theory, the development of model‐data fit indices, as well as commonly used Rasch measurement models. From an applied perspective, they discuss best practices in constructing, estimating, evaluating, and interpreting a Rasch scale using empirical examples. They provide an overview of a specialized Rasch software program (Winsteps) and an R program embedded within Shiny (Shiny_ERMA) for conducting the Rasch model analyses. With the increasing use of automated scoring systems in high-stakes testing, it has become essential that test developers assess the validity of the inferences based on scores produced by these systems. In this article, we attempt to place the issues associated with computer-automated scoring within the context of current validity theory. Although it is assumed that the criteria appropriate for evaluating the validity of score interpretations are the same for tests using automated scoring procedures as for other assessments, different aspects of the validity argument may require emphasis as a function of the scoring procedure. We begin the article with a taxonomy of automated scoring procedures. The presentation of this taxonomy provides a framework for discussing threats to validity that may take on increased importance for specific approaches to automated scoring. We then present a general discussion of the process by which test-based inferences are validated, followed by a discussion of the special issues that must be considered when scoring is done by computer.  相似文献

The scoring process is critical in the validation of tests that rely on constructed responses. Documenting that readers carry out the scoring in ways consistent with the construct and measurement goals is an important aspect of score validity. In this digital ITEMS module, Dr. Jacqueline Leighton and Dr. Blair Lehman review differences between think-aloud interviews to measure problem-solving processes and cognitive labs to measure comprehension processes. Learners are introduced to historical, theoretical, and procedural differences between these methods and how to use and analyze distinct types of verbal reports in the collection of evidence of test-taker response processes. The module includes details on (a) the different types of cognition that are tapped by different interviewer probes, (b) traditional interviewing methods and new automated tools for collecting verbal reports, and (c) options for analyses of verbal reports. 'Mental models' used by automated scoring for the simulation divisions of the computerized Architect Registration Examination are contrasted with those used by experienced human graders. Candidate solutions (N = 3613) received both automated and human holistic scores. Quantitative analyses suggest high correspondence between automated and human scores; thereby suggesting similar mental models are implemented. Solutions with discrepancies between automated and human scores were selected for qualitative analysis. The human graders were reconvened to review the human scores and to investigate the source of score discrepancies in light of rationales provided by the automated scoring process. After review, slightly more than half of the score discrepancies were reduced or eliminated. Six sources of discrepancy between original human scores and automated scores were identified: subjective criteria; objective criteria; tolerances/ weighting; details; examinee task interpretation; and unjustified. The tendency of the human graders to be compelled by automated score rationales varied by the nature of original score discrepancy. We determine that, while the automated scores are based on a mental model consistent with that of expert graders, there remain some important differences, both intentional and incidental, which distinguish between human and automated scoring. We conclude that automated scoring has the potential to enhance the validity evidence of scores in addition to improving efficiency.  相似文献

The growing use of computers for test delivery, along with increased interest in performance assessments, has motivated test developers to develop automated systems for scoring complex constructed-response assessment formats. In this article, we add to the available information describing the performance of such automated scoring systems by reporting on generalizability analyses of expert ratings and computer-produced scores for a computer-delivered performance assessment of physicians' patient management skills. Two different automated scoring systems were examined. These automated systems produced scores that were approximately as generalizable as those produced by expert raters. Additional analyses also suggested that the traits assessed by the expert raters and the automated scoring systems were highly related (i.e., true correlations between test forms, across scoring methods, were approximately 1.0). In the appendix, we discuss methods for estimating this correlation, using ratings and scores produced by an automated system from a single test form.  相似文献

A framework for evaluation and use of automated scoring of constructed‐response tasks is provided that entails both evaluation of automated scoring as well as guidelines for implementation and maintenance in the context of constantly evolving technologies. Consideration of validity issues and challenges associated with automated scoring are discussed within the framework. The fit between the scoring capability and the assessment purpose, the agreement between human and automated scores, the consideration of associations with independent measures, the generalizability of automated scores as implemented in operational practice across different tasks and test forms, and the impact and consequences for the population and subgroups are proffered as integral evidence supporting use of automated scoring. Specific evaluation guidelines are provided for using automated scoring to complement human scoring for tests used for high‐stakes purposes. These guidelines are intended to be generalizable to new automated scoring systems and as existing systems change over time.  相似文献

Automated essay scoring is a developing technology that can provide efficient scoring of large numbers of written responses. Its use in higher education admissions testing provides an opportunity to collect validity and fairness evidence to support current uses and inform its emergence in other areas such as K–12 large-scale assessment. In this study, human and automated scores on essays written by college students with and without learning disabilities and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were compared, using a nationwide (U.S.) sample of prospective graduate students taking the revised Graduate Record Examination. The findings are that, on average, human raters and the automated scoring engine assigned similar essay scores for all groups, despite average differences among groups with respect to essay length and spelling errors.  相似文献

Automated Writing Evaluation(AWE) program is designed to provide instant scores based on automated writing scoring engine along with diagnostic feedback. Five main AWE programs are introduced, four invented by foreign companies and one by Chinese native company for Chinese students. This paper reviews studies on AWE home and abroad from perspectives of its validity and instructional application. These studies have shown that AWE program should be used as an instructional tool to improve writing skill rather than only as a scoring and feedback engine. So how to implement and integrate AWE program into instructional context and to achieve more desirable learning outcomes while avoiding potential harms should be the focus of study for the future research.  相似文献

In the current study, two pools of 250 essays, all written as a response to the same prompt, were rated by two groups of raters (14 or 15 raters per group), thereby providing an approximation to the essay’s true score. An automated essay scoring (AES) system was trained on the datasets and then scored the essays using a cross-validation scheme. By eliminating one, two, or three raters at a time, and by calculating an estimate of the true scores using the remaining raters, an independent criterion against which to judge the validity of the human raters and that of the AES system, as well as the interrater reliability was produced. The results of the study indicated that the automated scores correlate with human scores to the same degree as human raters correlate with each other. However, the findings regarding the validity of the ratings support a claim that the reliability and validity of AES diverge: although the AES scoring is, naturally, more consistent than the human ratings, it is less valid.  相似文献

How do scores from writing samples generated by computerized essay scorers compare to those generated by “untrained” human scorers and what combination of scores, if any, is more accurate at placing students in composition courses? This study endeavored to answer this two-part question by evaluating the correspondence between writing sample scores generated by the IntelliMetric™ automated scoring system and scores generated by University Preparation English faculty, as well as examining the predictive validity of both the automated and human scores. The results revealed significant correlations between the faculty scores and the IntelliMetric™ scores of the ACCUPLACEROnLine WritePlacer Plus test. Moreover, logistic regression models that utilized the IntelliMetric™ scores and average faculty scores were more accurate at placing students (77% overall correct placement rate) than were models incorporating only the average faculty score or the IntelliMetric™ scores.  相似文献

The scoring of student essays by computer has generated much debate and subsequent research. The majority of the research thus far has focused on validating the automated scoring tools by comparing the electronic scores to human scores of writing or other measures of writing skills, and exploring the predictive validity of the automated scores. However, very little research has investigated possible effects of the essay prompts. This study endeavoured to do so by exploring test scores for three different prompts for the ACCUPLACER® WritePlacer® Plus test which is scored by the IntelliMetric® automated scoring system. The results indicated that there was no significant difference among the prompts overall; among males, between males and females, by native language or in comparison to scores generated by human raters. However, there was a significant difference in mean scores by topic for females.  相似文献

Performance assessments are typically scored by having experts rate individual performances. The cost associated with using expert raters may represent a serious limitation in many large-scale testing programs. The use of raters may also introduce an additional source of error into the assessment. These limitations have motivated development of automated scoring systems for performance assessments. Preliminary research has shown these systems to have application across a variety of tasks ranging from simple mathematics to architectural problem solving. This study extends research on automated scoring by comparing alternative automated systems for scoring a computer simulation test of physicians'patient management skills; one system uses regression-derived weights for components of the performance, the other uses complex rules to map performances into score levels. The procedures are evaluated by comparing the resulting scores to expert ratings of the same performances.  相似文献

The percentage of students retaking college admissions tests is rising. Researchers and college admissions offices currently use a variety of methods for summarizing these multiple scores. Testing organizations such as ACT and the College Board, interested in validity evidence like correlations with first‐year grade point average (FYGPA), often use the most recent test score available. In contrast, institutions report using a variety of composite scoring methods for applicants with multiple test records, including averaging and taking the maximum subtest score across test occasions (“superscoring”). We compare four scoring methods on two criteria. First, we compare correlations between scores and FYGPA by scoring method. We find them similar (). Second, we compare the extent to which test scores differentially predict FYGPA by scoring method and number of retakes. We find that retakes account for additional variance beyond standardized achievement and positively predict FYGPA across all scoring methods. Superscoring minimizes this differential prediction—although it may seem that superscoring should inflate scores across retakes, this inflation is “true” in that it accounts for the positive effects of retaking for predicting FYGPA. Future research should identity factors related to retesting and consider how they should be used in college admissions.  相似文献
