In the past, librarians taught reference management by training library users to use established software programs such as RefWorks or EndNote. In today's environment, there is a proliferation of Web-based programs that are being used by library clientele that offer a new twist on the well-known reference management programs. Basically, these new programs are PDF-manager software (e.g., Mendeley or Papers). Librarians are faced with new questions, issues, and concerns, given the new workflows and pathways that these PDF-manager programs present. This article takes a look at some of those. 相似文献

The explosion of availability of information on the Internet requires that libraries evolve into value-added information providers, rather than mere curators of collections. Modern libraries need to stay relevant to a diverse, technologically savvy patron base and to facilitate and add value to the research community, while facing significant resource constraints. To face these challenges, libraries need to embrace digital technologies and library management systems (LMS) in order to work smart and achieve more with less. While LMS systems have been around for decades, libraries can explore the new frontier by embracing open source solutions, like open source software (OSS) library systems, which are free to acquire. They need to collaborate with computer experts and become technologically savvy to harness the full power of OSS solutions to meet the specific needs of the library and patron base. This article provides an overview of the availability, benefits, and drawbacks of various LMS systems and OSS variants, drawing from experiences in the present Indian context. 相似文献

Abstract Launching virtual chat reference services at Boatwright Library at the University of Richmond has been an interesting challenge of “trial and error” over the years. After trying several different software programs and staffing options, librarians have finally found a niche with AOL's Instant Messenger service. The first section of the article describes a path of experimentation, including early collaborations with the computing services help desk, staffing patterns within the library, technical and financial challenges with virtual reference software, and attempts to get students to use reference chat services. The second half of the case study describes the great success with AIM service in the past year, providing statistical information as well as coverage of training and guidelines, advertising, and staffing. This article touches on a number of themes, including the value of experimenting with a variety of chat reference software programs, and the need for library staff to stay current with new technologies. 相似文献

AbstractCitation management programs are tools used to organize references and to create citations and bibliographies. Libraries are often the central point for providing training and support in using these tools. To determine how we could improve our support and training services, we surveyed users to determine what software in being used, why they chose that particular program, what features are important, and how they use citation management programs to collaborate. Results indicate that users chose a particular program because it was freely available or recommended to them by others and that they thought that importing references and creating citations were important features. We also found a majority of respondents used citation management programs to collaborate and turned to the library for training and support. 相似文献

[目的/意义]我国图书馆联盟组织管理模式并未成熟,组织管理缺乏规范的规章制度和固定的管理人员,联盟运作效率低、目标难以实现。相比之下,国外图书馆联盟发展较早,组织管理较成熟,已形成一定规模的固定模式,其优秀的组织管理经验值得参考和借鉴。[方法/过程]选取100个遍布各大洲的国外图书馆联盟作为调查对象,利用文献调查法、网站调查法、归纳法和比较研究法对调查对象的组织管理模式构建情况进行深入调查,归纳各管理模式的管理架构设置、管理机构职权和议事机制等具体内容。[结果/结论]国外图书馆联盟组织管理模式呈现组织管理政策完善、联盟成员参与度高、管理机构权责明确、联盟管理和运作效率高的特点,并总结出4点启示:制度是图书馆联盟规范管理的保障,高参与度是图书馆联盟协同管理的关键,权责明确是图书馆联盟精细化管理的重点,稳定的管理团队是图书馆联盟高效管理的前提。 相似文献

This article describes the new role of academic libraries in higher education and shows how it has changed collection development objectives to serve a nontraditional constituency not served in the past.
