As fall 2020 semester approached, librarians at Colorado School of Mines faced the task of transitioning the information literacy lesson for the university's Design I course to a fully virtual lesson. In previous semesters, the lesson had successfully been taught using a flipped model; pairing an online lesson with an in-person librarian meeting. Each semester approximately 600 students in teams of five met with a librarian to discuss their approach to the course's semester-long project. Due to COVID-19, the team conducted more than 120 team meetings online using Zoom in fall 2020. Surveys were administered to students in the course to gauge their opinions on meeting success, librarian helpfulness and sign-up logistics. The findings provide insight into the use of an online meeting to meet the needs of students in a project-based engineering design course. 相似文献

Learning how to evaluate reading texts should be an important part of preservice training. This study used a simulated textbook
selection process to compare differences in the consistency of experimental and control groups in evaluating textbooks. The
experimental groups, who were required to define their criteria operationally, were more consistent in their evaluations than
the control group, who used traditional checklists.

Over the next 5 years, digital textbook sales in the United States will surpass 25% of combined new textbook sales for the
Higher Education and Career Education markets. Moreover, we expect digital to be the dominant form factor in Higher Education
textbooks inside of 7 years. This growth in digital textbooks will boost revenues in excess of $1.5 billion within 5 years
(Private: Digital Textbooks Reach the Tipping Point in the US Higher Education—A Revised 5-Year Projection). This growth will
also create avenues for new digital product models, allow new content publishers to enter the textbook market, lead to fundamental
shifts in purchasing patterns around learning materials, and expedite the formal adoption of open educational resources to
augment premium digital content. 相似文献

Digital resources have been more widely used in the university classroom since the Spring semester of 2020, but the reality is that Covid-19 simply accelerated an already leading tendency in education. The pedagogical potential of teaching with digital resources, editions and collections remains largely unexplored in the Spanish university context, especially in relation to the study of literary and historical texts. This article reports on a case study at the University of Alicante. An online questionnaire was dispensed to 134 English Studies undergraduates at Alicante in order to elicit the students' responses to electronic resources, their knowledge, uses and attitudes towards them. We also attempted to gauge their engagement with the library services at Alicante and beyond. The results indicate a statistically significant preference for electronic over print resources. Nevertheless, they also suggest the students' low degree of awareness of digital resources and their inability to discriminate between digital resources and general Internet sources. A lack of familiarity with the full potential that libraries offer is also reported, which stresses the need for further training in what seems to be a neglected but crucial area of their studies. 相似文献

ABSTRACTTo help students withstand the rising cost of textbooks and in turn support the mission of student success, the University of South Florida (USF) has implemented two electronic resources–based initiatives as part of the Tampa Library’s Textbook Affordability Project. Through the E-books for the Classroom program, the library purchases electronic versions of texts required for coursework, providing equitable access to needed materials at no cost to the students. For the past 5 years, this program has evolved into a highly successful textbook affordability measure, acquiring hundreds of e-books and serving thousands of students. Additionally, the library, with the support of the Office of the Provost and in collaboration with Innovative Education, is publishing a faculty-authored multimedia Open Access textbook to be used by hundreds of students each semester in USF’s children’s literature courses. The USF institutional repository, Scholar Commons, will host the textbook, making it freely available on a global scale. This program effectively uses library expertise and skills, coordinating university-wide faculty, professional, and technical resources, to create library-as-publisher for the benefit of the students and textbook affordability. 相似文献

The debate concerning the advantages and disadvantages of state vs. local adoption of textbooks has gone on for decades. Until
recently, however, there have been no systematic attempts to study this issue—at least not in a way that will yield insights
to policymakers and others interested in the manner in which educators evaluate and select textbooks. This article describes
recently completed studies that have examined textbook adoption and have the potential to illuminate this debate. The many
pros and cons surrounding state vs. local adoption are considered in light of these recent findings.
Michael A. Tulley, associate professor of education at Indiana University-Kokomo, has been researching and writing in the
area of textbook adoption since the early 1980s. He is a former classroom reading teacher, and also served as a state-level
reading consultant with the Indiana Department of Education. 相似文献

The current generation of students uses computers, tablets, dedicated e-readers, and smart phones more than any previous student
group. Student adoption of Web apps, social media of all kinds, computer games, as well as learning and desktop software is
remarkably high making them not just computer literate but often digital experts. However, although they spend a great deal
of time using the latest digital devices, 75% of students surveyed still prefer the traditional printed textbook over a digital
counterpart, according to the ongoing research project Student Attitudes Toward Content in Higher Education from the Book Industry Study Group (BISG). The data indicate that the current print value proposition is not meeting the
needs of students. In particular, the price/value relationship is not sufficient to justify required adoptions or to preclude
students seeking alternative methods for obtaining their content and pedagogy. Next-generation digital learning products have
tremendous potential to offer students individualized solutions to their learning challenges enabling them to reduce their
study time and to improve their grades. Their levels of customizability and interactivity are appealing to both students and
instructors. 相似文献

The North Carolina State University Libraries has long recognized the financial burden textbook costs place on students. By crosswalking information on use of our textbook collection with textbook cost and course enrollment data, we have begun to map the environment for textbook use at the university and identified opportunities for faculty outreach in promoting alternatives to traditional textbooks, including our Alt-Textbook program. This article describes our programs, our investigation of textbook use patterns, and how we are using these data to inform our practice. 相似文献

During the spring 2007 semester, a large cohort of undergraduates enrolled in the BUS110 course offered through the Stony Brook University College of Business. The business librarian and other library instruction librarians provided single library sessions to all sections of the course. Toward the end of the 1-hour library information session, the students were asked to fill out an online user satisfaction survey to assess how much they had learned and to evaluate the teaching tools and methodology of the librarians. Toward the end of the semester the business librarian posted a follow up survey to the BUS110 Blackboard site to assess whether the students had used the resources demonstrated by the librarians in the library session, whether they had had follow-up interactions with the librarians, and whether they had positive attitudes toward the library, librarians, and business databases. The majority of students had used the databases and had a positive attitude toward the instruction and the library. 相似文献

In response to rising textbook costs, many have urged adoption of open educational resources (OER) for students. However, library-owned e-books also provide free access to students, without the potential disadvantages of OER. In this study the authors explore the suitability of e-books as textbooks by examining the social sciences textbook list in Fall 2017 at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). Overall, 18% of the textbooks were available as a multi-user format and this rate increased with course level. Despite their limited availability, multi-user e-books provide a free, convenient option for students, and they may play a role in the textbook affordability solution. 相似文献

Try searching the library catalog, as many students do each semester for the latest version of the textbook being used in a class at many universities and you will likely come up empty-handed. Many academic libraries—due to high prices, frequently issued new editions, and a tendency to go missing from the collection—have justifiably chosen to play only a marginal role in the provision of textbooks on campus. However, the dynamics of the textbook market are changing rapidly and this presentation explored the question: Should libraries reconsider the roles they play in the provision of course materials on campus? This session focused on the issue of affordability in the context of the rapid evolution and increased availability of e-textbooks (electronic versions of textbooks). Topics covered included: an overview of the e-textbook market, purchasing options and outlets for e-textbooks, new business models for institutional access to e-textbooks, potential savings from e-textbook adoptions, information on negotiating with publishers and platform providers, and why the library is well-positioned to play a prominent role in the provision of e-textbooks. 相似文献

Currently the literature examining formal business information literacy (BIL) instruction and graduate business students focuses on the collaborative efforts between individual librarians and business school faculty members to bring information literacy into the classroom. This article argues that all graduate business students need formal BIL instruction to succeed in their studies and as business leaders. The unique decade-long collaboration between Hofstra University's Axinn Library and Frank G. Zarb School of Business is examined. 相似文献

Dr. Ken Haycock directs the recently created Master of Management in Library and Information Science (MMLIS) program in the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. As the only LIS program located in a major business school, the MMLIS is focused on integrating business skills with traditional library and information science to graduate students who are prepared for leadership roles in the profession. The MMLIS program requires students to have prior work experience. Students work in teams to solve real world problems and also choose an independent project. Of particular interest is a proposed special track for experienced library and information science managers to acquire the MLIS. 相似文献
