The war on cancer has been waged for nearly 40 years, yet the cancer burden remains high, especially among minority and underserved populations. One strategy to make strides in the war on cancer and its disparate impacts is to increase the diversity of the cancer research workforce. We describe an approach to recruit a diverse population of future cancer researchers from an undergraduate student population at a minority-serving land-grant institution. Specifically, we have addressed the following questions: Given the dearth of published reports of undergraduate cancer courses, is it possible for undergraduates at a land-grant institution (rather than a research or medical institution) to successfully learn cancer biology from a lecture-based course? Can we develop a template that has the potential to be used by others to develop and implement an undergraduate cancer course? Can such a course stimulate interest in careers in cancer research? Based on a learning gains analysis, students were able to learn cancer content and related skills, and based on student surveys, students'' interest in cancer research was stimulated by course participation. We have identified aspects of our course development process that were critical for the successful development, implementation, and assessment of the course. 相似文献

伴随"一流本科"建设步伐的加快,本科教学质量研究成为我国高等教育领域研究的重要主题。运用文献计量学方法,选取2009—2019年CNKI数据库,以"本科教学质量"为篇名进行文献检索,筛选得出2029篇有效文献。利用CiteSpace 5.6 R3软件进行可视化知识图谱分析。研究发现:(1)新建本科院校、实践教学、教学改革、人才培养、质量监控等关键词成为近10年来的热点;(2)我国本科教学质量研究脉络主要是以教学质量、质量工程、本科教学、应用型本科院校、教学评价等话题交织演进;(3)突发性检测揭示以应用型本科、国家标准、审核评估、保障体系、应用型本科院校为话题引领的研究前沿。文章分析指出,我国本科教学质量研究的多元交叉研究有待增强,影响机制研究有待深化,定量实证研究亟待推进。 相似文献

The recruitment and training of scientists is an area of international concern. Much of the research and policy focus around
this issue in the UK has been on how science is taught in schools and in particular on the structure of the school science
curriculum. Much less attention has been devoted to the undergraduate student experience and the trajectory that learners
take which can lead to higher education and into careers as professional scientists and technicians. This paper reports the
findings from a comparative study of the experiences and aspirations of almost 1,000 art and science undergraduates studying
at 6 elite British universities. There is no evidence to suggest that undergraduate scientists are put off a career in the
science, technology, engineering and mathematics field, although theirs is arguably a less positive experience than that of
their peers who study arts subjects. Most science undergraduates have clear career aspirations which are largely linked to
remaining in the field and often involve further study. For many, these aspirations lead them towards the applied sciences
and away from a career in ‘pure’ research or academia. 相似文献

AbstractWinthrop University is a public comprehensive university of about 6000 students, 5000 of whom are undergraduates. The Department of Mathematics offers a baccalaureate degree in mathematics, but has no graduate degree programs. As late as 2009, there was essentially no undergraduate research in the department. At this time, faculty made efforts to cultivate a research program that would motivate faculty to pursue more scholarly opportunities and include undergraduates in their scholarship. These efforts began with in-house-sponsored summer programs that lasted a few weeks and grew over the subsequent 5 year period to several externally funded undergraduate research programs, including a National Science Foundation-sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates program. In this paper, we discuss some lessons we learned in developing a culture of undergraduate research. We focus on the advantages and challenges of undergraduate research at primarily undergraduate universities, offer advice for starting or growing a research program, and provide resources for funding undergraduate research. 相似文献

Despite the many benefits of involving undergraduates in research and the growing number of undergraduate research programs,
few scholars have investigated the factors that affect faculty members’ decisions to involve undergraduates in their research
projects. We investigated the individual factors and institutional contexts that predict faculty members’ likelihood of engaging
undergraduates in their research project(s). Using data from the Higher Education Research Institute’s 2007–2008 Faculty Survey,
we employ hierarchical generalized linear modeling to analyze data from 4,832 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM) faculty across 194 institutions to examine how organizational citizenship behavior theory and social exchange theory
relate to mentoring students in research. Key findings show that faculty who work in the life sciences and those who receive
government funding for their research are more likely to involve undergraduates in their research project(s). In addition,
faculty at liberal arts or historically Black colleges are significantly more likely to involve undergraduate students in
research. Implications for advancing undergraduate research opportunities are discussed. 相似文献

Internships are a growing, yet controversial, labour market phenomenon. In particular, the issue of unpaid internships has been the source of legislative, judicial and ethical debate. Some have criticised colleges and universities for promoting an expansion of internships for undergraduate students – with little regard for internship characteristics such as compensation, quality of supervision and work activities. Meanwhile, there is a paucity of research examining the role internship characteristics, such as compensation, supervisor behaviours and work design have on internship efficacy. Based on a survey of undergraduate students in the US, the results showed that supervisor mentoring, the developmental value of the internship and the job pursuit intentions of the intern with the host employer were lower for those reporting on their unpaid internship vs. paid internship. Meanwhile, supervisor support and supervisor mentoring are significant predictors of internship efficacy regardless of internship compensation, while work design has much less of an impact on internship efficacy. The implications of the findings for educators, employers and prospective interns are highlighted. 相似文献

We present an exploratory study of how undergraduates' involvement in research influences postgraduates (i.e., graduate and postdoctoral researchers) and faculty. We used a qualitative approach to examine the relationships among undergraduates, postgraduates, and the faculty head in a research group. In this group, undergraduates viewed postgraduates as more approachable than the faculty head both literally and figuratively. Mentorship by postgraduates presented unique challenges for undergraduates, including unrealistic expectations and varying abilities to mentor. The postgraduates and faculty head concurred that undergraduates contributed to the group's success and served as a source of frustration. Postgraduates appreciated the opportunity to observe multiple approaches to mentoring as they saw the faculty head and other postgraduates interact with undergraduates. The faculty head viewed undergraduate research as important for propagating the research community and for gaining insights into undergraduates and their postgraduate mentors. These results highlight how the involvement of undergraduates and postgraduates in research can limit and enhance the research experiences of members of the undergraduate-postgraduate-faculty triad. A number of tensions emerge that we hypothesize are intrinsic to undergraduate research experiences at research universities. Future studies can focus on determining the generalizability of these findings to other groups and disciplines. 相似文献

Involvement in research has become a fixture in undergraduate science education across the United States. Graduate and postdoctoral
students are often called upon to mentor undergraduates at research universities, yet mentoring relationships in undergraduate—graduate/postdoctoral
student dyads and undergraduate—graduate/postdoctoral student—faculty triads have been largely unexamined. Here, we present
findings of an exploratory case study framed by relational theory that identifies the motives, gains, and challenges reported
by graduate/postdoctoral students who mentored undergraduates in research. Graduate/postdoctoral mentors experienced a wide
range of gains, including improved qualifications and career preparation, cognitive and socioemotional growth, improved teaching
and communication skills, and greater enjoyment of their own apprenticeship experience. Notably, graduate/postdoctoral mentors
reported twice as many gains as challenges, neither of which were limited by their motives for mentoring. Indeed, their motives
were fairly narrow and immediate, focusing on how mentoring would serve as a means to an end, while the gains and challenges
they reported indicated a longer-term vision of how mentoring influenced their personal, cognitive, and professional growth.
We propose that understanding the impact of mentoring undergraduates on the education and training of graduate/postdoctoral
students may uncover new ideas about the benefits reaped through undergraduate research experiences. 相似文献

Adult learners (age 25 or older) now comprise approximately 40 percent of under-graduate enrollment. However, predictive models
of undergraduate academic success are usually based on traditional young undergraduate students, presenting a problematic
picture for the adult undergraduate population. Past research indicates that many older adult learners enter higher education
from family backgrounds that tend to place them at an academic disadvantage, bring with them deficiencies in academic skills,
and are less involved in academic and social aspects of campus life. Therefore, conventional wisdom would suggest that older
students should have lower cumulative grade-point averages than younger students. However, past research on academic performance
of adult undergraduates does not substantiate this prediction. This study focused on the validity of generalizing a traditional
model of academic performance to older adult students. Results from this study indicate that a traditional model of academic
performance prediction is inappropriate for use with older adult undergraduates.

In this study, we analyze the contribution of the undergraduate student who participates in the process of generating scientific data and developing a research project using Brazilian research as an example. Historically, undergraduate students have performed the critical role of research assistants in developing countries. This aspect has been underappreciated as a means of generating scientific data in Brazilian research facilities. Brazilian educational institutions are facing major age-related generational changes among the science faculty within the next 5–10 yr. A lack of adequate support for graduate students leads to a concern that undergraduates will not be interested in choosing research assistant programs and, subsequently, academic research careers. To remedy this situation it is important to focus on ways to encourage new research careers and enhance university–industry collaborations. 相似文献

There has been a good deal of research into the problems Chinese postgraduate students studying in English-speaking universities face with regard to critical thinking. This project is an attempt to tackle this issue from a new perspective. It aims to explore how a unique aspect of the university curriculum in China – the so-called ‘four treasures’ (four compulsory modules of political thought taken by all Chinese undergraduate students: ‘The Fundamentals of Marxism’; ‘Maoism and Chinese Characteristic Socialism’; ‘The Outline of Modern Chinese History’; and ‘Moral Thoughts, Legal and Civic Education’) – influence Chinese students in terms of their political and cultural values. It will trace the emergence of this programme and offer a content analysis of the curriculum. The study also uses focus groups to investigate how the Chinese postgraduate students regard their undergraduate courses in China. This article will argue that the higher education curriculum in China, which is heavily regulated by the state, has become one of the main obstacles preventing Chinese undergraduate students from developing independent and critical thinking, particularly in the arts, humanities and social sciences. 相似文献
