Teacher knowledge of how to teach a composite class (a class of two or more grades) was studied by observing eight outstanding teachers at work and by eliciting their knowledge of the reasons for their own behaviour. From observation and interviews, 125 incidents, each with an explanatory teacher comment, were collected. A maxim was educed for each and the maxims were classified under six main headings: (1) management, (2) personalisation, (3) class climate, (4) teaching strategies, (5) curriculum, and (6) teaching contexts. The validity of these maxims was assessed by a group of 21 outstanding composite‐class teachers, including seven of the original eight, who also commented on the maxims’ usefulness for in‐service professional development. The majority of outstanding teachers agreed with almost all the maxims and they felt the maxims would be valuable for preservice and in‐service teacher education. This paper discusses the importance of teachers having knowledge and skills in the areas of personalisation of instruction, classroom management and creating a positive class climate. Also discussed are the implications of disagreements amongst teachers over the validity of some of the maxims and the issue of the extent to which composite‐class teaching requires different skills and knowledge from ordinary class teaching.  相似文献

This study goes beyond student perceptions of online learning experiences, satisfaction, and attitudes, to examine the actual participation and dynamics that occur in online discussions and their relationship to student learning outcomes. A content analysis approach was used to investigate students' socio-cognitive processes in an online graduate-level English grammar class. Student postings were rated using a newly developed Gricean Cooperative Principle scoring rubric to assess student participation as determined by four maxims: Quantity, Quality, Relevance, and Manner. Results suggest that Quality is the most important criterion for predicting direct responses to a posting. Students with high average Quality scores also received higher final course grades than did their counterparts. In addition, students with high scores for Manner earned higher conference grades than did their counterparts.  相似文献

会话含意的推导和理解是Griee会话含意理论中的重点。人们对会话含意的理解并不只是以会话准则为依据,文化语境也是必须考虑的一个因素,因为人们在交谈时所遵循的准则可能因文化而异。不论是一般会话含意还是特殊会话含意的理解都离不开蕴藏在社会中的文化土壤。在交际过程中信息意义的获取离不开对整体文化意义的认知。文章从跨文化交际中的言语交际的角度分析和说明了东西方会话含意的理解和差异。希望为跨文化交际者在进行跨文化交际时提供一定的指导和借鉴。  相似文献

Both contemporary popular and scholarly discourse on teacher development and evaluation assumes the truth of a certain view of normative human behavior, one that holds that skill in a given domain is predicated upon the application of maxims, rules, or principles in a given situation. Such a view would allow one to isolate behaviors associated with expert practice, distill the rules that give rise to them, and both develop new teachers and evaluate practicing teachers on the basis of such maxims. In this essay, Derek Gottlieb argues that the phenomenon of skillful teaching, and studies thereof, expose the inconsistencies and confusion underlying this model, encouraging the field generally to consider alternative holistic accounts of expert teacher practice as we seek to train and appraise great teachers.  相似文献

The article attempts to consider sympathetically the value of practice in the acquisition of skills both practical and intellectual, and more particularly its value in learning the art of teaching. In so doing the writer accepts a Polanyian point of view, which affirms the existence of a tacit element in all our acts of knowing and stresses the distinction between knowledge of subsidiary elements and knowledge of the comprehensive entities to which they stand in relation.

Further to this, the rules which guide our teaching are seen, not as explicit directives derived from theory, but as maxims interpreted in the light of practice. The conclusion arrived at is that the art of teaching is at least partially unspecifiable and must therefore be passed on from master to apprentice.  相似文献
