On Jan 23 rd , 2013, Prof. Dr. Herbert J ckle, Vice- President of the Max Planck Society (MPG) and a world- renowned expert in molecular developmental biology, was honoured with the CAS Award for International Scientific Cooperation of 2012 due to his devotion to the cooperation between CAS and MPG. He shared the Award together with Prof. C. N. R. Rao from India and Prof. G. A. Zherebtsov from Russia. Prof. J ckle has endeavoured to integrate a Max Planck model of management with the scientific research system of CAS in his catalytic efforts to establish and operate the CAS-MPG Partner Institute for Computational Biology (PICB) in Shanghai. In an interview with BCAS reporter SONG Jianlan, he is invited to recall his experiences in cooperation with CAS and share with us his thoughts. Supported by the US National Science Foundation and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, a rare and endangered fern, Isoetes hypsophila, was discovered by a Sino-US research team headed by Prof. SUN Hang from the CAS Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB) and Dr. David E. Prof. LI Can, vice director-general of the CAS Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, was elected new president of the Executive Committee of the International Association for Catalysis Societies (IACS) at the 14th International Congress on Catalysis held from 13 to 18 July in Seoul, ROK. The Partner Group on Colloid and Interface Science is based on the International Joint Laboratory, established in the former Beijing Institute of Photographic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and was incorporated into the Center for Molecular Science of the Institute of Chemistry, CAS in 1999. The Partner Group aims at research on molecular assembly of biomimetic membranes and the synthesis of nano-structured materials by way of training younger Chinese scientists and making use of the advanced facilities in Germany. Both sides cooperate closely in sectors in which they have a common interest to push forward the development of related sciences in China. The group leader, Li Junbai, has received many awards and has obtained much financial support inside China. On the German side, the Partner Group is hosting or participating in several research and development projects commissioned by the Max Planck Society and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).
