Vagueness is a natural character of language. Vagueness of journalistic English exists in lexical level and syntactic level as well. Lexical vagueness in journalistic English is usually resulted from the indefinite meaning of words, while in syntactic level, it may be resulted from the combined use of vague words or the employment of some sentence patterns. This thesis aims to help readers to understand journalistic English from the perspective of vague language.  相似文献

Different languages are unable to be separated from their specific social culture backgrounds. Vocabulary is language’s subsystem. English metaphor is an important part of vocabulary; it belongs to the semantic motivation of English lexicology. The social culture of a language reflects more from its linguistic metaphor. Metaphor is a significant language phenomenon that is closely linked with its culture. Much of the deep culture of a language (such as view of life, view of value, etc.) is instantiated and transmitted through the metaphors people use on the daily basis. From the angle of the relation between language and social culture, this article discusses the function of English social culture in forming English metaphors.  相似文献

Traditional ways of English learning such as memorizing a certain couple of words and reciting from the word list seem much easier than developing a useful vocabulary for L2 learners. However, learners complain that they have suffered from couples of difficulties as the words are easy to be forgotten. Compare with the ways of mechanical memorizing, it argues that providing L2 learners with the development of useful lexical knowledge such as semantic information and morphological structure is more effective in the process of language acquisition. Moreover, developing a useful lexical knowledge is far more complicated for English learners.  相似文献

Cameroon, a Western African coastal country, with a heritage of its history of being a previous colony of both British and French from 1916 to 1960, advocates a bilingual language policy in which English and French both serve as official languages. Due to the complex multiethnic and multilingual situation in Cameroon, multilingualism is the factual norm for the population. Besides English and French, numerous indigenous languages, especially Cameroon Pidgin English as the most significant lingual Franca of the country, are also widely used. Some demographics and sociolinguistic survey even reveal the evidence that this pidginized variety of English has occupied its indispensable position in almost all the aspects in the Cameroonian social life. Since this variety of English has long been used in the country for over 500 years, it has formed distinctive features in phonology, lexis as well as in grammar. This nativized language is now increasingly accepted as distinctive Cameroonian contributions to the world Englishes. Will the spread of this variety stand in the way of the learning "standard" English, or should this unstandardized variety be discouraged or banned in order to preserve the authenticity of English language? English as an international language teaching thus is confronted with new challenges and pondering about its future.  相似文献

As one of the most frequent words in the English language, the study of NEED has attracted the attention of linguists in the late decades.Nonetheless, none of the previous research had ever examined the diachronic variation of NEED in American English from 1810s to 2000s as this study did, thus not in a position to make a comprehensive observation of NEED variation. The present study is based on a well-balanced corpora-Corpus of Historical American English(COHAE)1 to investigate the diachronic change of NEED in written American English.Moreover,intra-linguistic and extra-linguistic factors were analyzed to provide reasonable explanations for the differences in frequency. The aim was to improve the understanding of the development and variation of NEED usage in American English. The study suggests that before the 1900s,NEED as a model and verb in American English shows a distinct and complex picture different from that in the British English, but it shows similar development since then.It also finds that need to is undergoing grammaticalization.Another finding worth noting is that NEED undertakes degrammaticalization on the one hand and experiences regrammaticalization on the other hand.  相似文献

Idiom is a phrase or sentence whose meaning is not clear from the meaning of its individual words and it must be learnt as a whole unit. The idioms of the different languages reflect the difference in many aspects of the two cultures. No one can acquire a language well if he doesn’t know the model and principle of the culture.  相似文献

To those whose interest is in translation, an important topic for study is the choice of words. As lexicon is the mostactive and the liveliest component of a language, in the course of translation, due attention must be given to the analysis andcomparison of words and phrases before a suitable word or phrase is chosen to convey the meaning in the original version.Meanwhile, English words and phrases are rich and the same words or phrases may be different in meaning in a certain context, therefore, the diction in translation from English to Chinese is undoubtedly a matter of importance.  相似文献

Chinese is a language which emphasizes on artistic conception and parataxis. It embodies spirit in forms and gives read- ers enough space to think and abundant fuzzy beauty. Fuzziness is the mainstream. However, English is an logical language with strict grammar rules which embodies form in spirit. Fuzziness is tributary in English. As a result, it is inevitable to lose the fuzzy beauty during the course of translating from Chinese to English due to these two different languages with diverse value function and appreciation of the beauty. A lot of scholars feel pity and helpless. Starting from the perspective of translation beauty, this thesis an- alyzes the phenomenon of the loss of fuzzy beauty. It introduces the definition of the fuzzy beauty and makes a brief introduction of the wide existence of fuzzy beauty, analyzes the courses and reasons of the loss of fuzzy beauty in the course of translating Chinese to English . At last, it puts forward two specific methods to translate fuzzy beauty, trying to recreate the fuzzy beauty to the most de- gree.  相似文献

Learning a language,in fact,is inseparable from learning its culture and taboo is part of it.Justified by a number of examples,a study of the similarities and differences of the English and Chinese taboo was made, providing evidence for the idea that taboo varies with different cultural backgrounds and showing a growing tendency of fading from language communication, which is of great importance for a language learner to have a better understanding of foreign cultures.  相似文献

Many middle school students like to ask how they can learn English well. This is really a difficult question to answer, Some teachers may frankly tell their students:Memorize new words and phrases, spend much time in reading and soon you will have a good command of English. As a matter of fact, the case is not like this. The English language has a large vocabulary of more than 400,000 words not including phrases. How can a student's brain take in so many words just like a computer? On the other hand, if the student lays too much emphasis on written English (and only learns it well),what will he do when he wants to express himself orally without any communicative competence? The teachers neglect the importance of the other three skills, which are listening, speaking and writing,  相似文献

It is of great importance to obtain good collocation knowledge for fluent and appropriate language use as many words are used in a limited set of collocations. Studies on cognitive linguistics show that cognitive factors play an important role in collocation study as most collocations are metaphorically motivated, and that collocational behavior is influenced by a number of factors, including the semantics of the individual items themselves, the influence of other well-established meanings, the influence of metaphor, the influence of semantic prosody, etc.. Therefore, it is significant to explain and teach certain types of collocations in language teaching by considering the underlying factors which influence the collocational process. Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners have some special collocation problems in their English learning, which not only result from grammatical incompetence, but also from their lack of conceptual fluency and metaphor competence. The disclosure of similarities and differences between the conceptual systems of English and Chinese will help to illuminate the nature of negative transfer of their first language in collocation acquisition of Chinese EFL learners. The author of the paper, by disclosing the interaction between collocation and metaphor from cognitive, linguistic, and social perspectives, proposes semantic-oriented principle, pragmatics-oriented principle, and culture-oriented principle to incorporate cognitive factors to collocation teaching. It is suggested that stress should be given to the teaching of conceptual metaphor and its mechanisms in collocation teaching before students can finally improve collocation competence with a focus on metaphor awareness.  相似文献

Communicative language teaching(CLT),as a language teaching approach, aiming at teaching second languages for the ultimate goal of communication, has been known and widely practiced by Chinese teachers in their English teaching. But due to the limitations of both students and teachers,CLT is not executed successfully in quite a lot of higher vocational colleges. To carry it out successfully in English classrooms, the following important factors should be seriously taken into account:understanding communicative competence, class instruction in English pragmatics, teachers’ role in CLT and assessment of communicative language ability.Hopefully, through discussion of these key aspects of CLT,guiding effect can be produced on improving teaching efficiency through CLT from the perspective of teachers.  相似文献
