This study investigates the ongoing debate in the conceptual change literature between unitary and elemental perspectives on students' knowledge structure coherence. More specifically, the current study explores two potential explanations for the conflicting results reported by Ioannides and Vosniadou (2002 Ioannides, C. and Vosniadou, S. 2002. The changing meanings of force. Cognitive Science Quarterly, 2(1): 562.  [Google Scholar])and diSessa, Gillespie, and Esterly (2004 diSessa, A. A, Gillespie, N. and Esterly, J. 2004. Coherence versus fragmentation in the development of the concept of force. Cognitive Science, 28: 843900. [Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) in terms of differences in coding schemes and differences in student populations. The current study addresses these questions by applying the coding schemes from both studies to interviews with 201 students drawn from the United States, the Philippines, Turkey, China, and Mexico. The analyses focus first on the coding schemes, suggesting that differences in coding schemes seem unlikely to account for the differences in the original studies. The analyses then focus on potential differences between student populations, suggesting that some differences exist in terms of consistency and meanings that might result from language, culture, or educational systems, but that these differences are too small to account for the radical differences in the findings of the original studies. Two additional explanations are then proposed and explored involving the instruments and the epistemological stances invoked for the students. Overall, the results align more closely with the findings of diSessa, Gillespie, and Esterly (2004 diSessa, A. A, Gillespie, N. and Esterly, J. 2004. [Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) in their article about evidence‐based practice and Reading Recovery (RR), written in response to Reynolds and Wheldall (2007 Reynolds, M. and Wheldall, K. 2007. Reading Recovery twenty years down the track: Looking forward, looking back. International Journal of Disability, Development and Education, 54: 199223. [Taylor & Francis Online] [Google Scholar]). Particular attention is paid to the processes and findings of the What Works Clearinghouse evaluation of RR. The suggestion that this evaluation is flawed casts doubt about some of its findings. The authors maintain their earlier stance that RR is effective for many students but do not accept that there is evidence that initial gains are sustained through the primary grades, that RR is an efficient tier two intervention in a response to intervention approach and that significant cost benefits have been demonstrated in education systems. It is concluded that research into alternative interventions that could be implemented at lower cost is warranted.  相似文献

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

A profile is sketched of engineering statistics by contrasting it with statistics courses for students of mathematics on one hand, and for social science students on the other. Aspects which play a role comprise level of abstraction, amount of technical detail and choice of subjects. A brief outline is given of feasible forms and contents of statistics courses for engineers. Special attention is devoted to the nature of exercises suitable in this context. Questions addressed concern the degree of adaptation to the student's own field of study and the (dis)advantage of embedding the pure statistical problems into a technical ‘story’.

Statistik für Ingenier Studenten wird durch Vergleich von Vorle-sungen über Statistik für Studenten der Mathematik auf der einen Seite und für Studenten der Sozialwissenschaften auf der anderen skizziert. Aspekte, welche eine Rolle spielen, umfassen das Niveau der Abstraktion, die Anzahl technischer Details und die Wahl der Themen. Eine kurze Übersickt wird gegeben über mögliche Formen und Inhalte von Vorlesungen über Statistik für Studenten der Ingenieurwissenschaften. This study developed and tested a model to identify the predictors of retirement planning based on an extension of the theory of planned behavior ([TPB], Ajzen, 1991 Ajzen , I. ( 1991 ). The theory of planned behavior . Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes , 50 ( 2 ), 179211 .[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] [Google Scholar]) that included individual differences in proactivity and time discounting. The results showed that personal attitudes, sense of control, social influence, and stable traits have a significant influence on the extent to which late-career workers are engaged in retirement planning over and above the effect of demographic variables. However, some gender differences in the prediction of retirement planning were identified that have important implications for the design of programs and interventions to encourage planning.  相似文献

The role of philosophy of education has become seriously blurred with constant cries for practical and immediate answers. The nature of the discipline is such that when practical solutions are demanded of it, it loses its vitality. Philosophy is an intellectual and contemplative exercise; it is a true activity of leisure, one which needs to be enjoyed for its own sake. This intellectual and contemplative activity is of service to the practical concerns of education because choice, action, and judgment — the concerns of the practical realm —depend upon intellectual knowledge. Philosophy of education is, therefore, an essential discipline in the education of the student-teacher.  相似文献

This paper examines how staff in schools formulate decisions about pupil organisation. A small sample of primary and secondary schools from across Scotland was involved in the study.
In 1996 Her Majesty's Inspectors published a report entitled Achievement for All (SOEID, 1996) which, it was envisaged, would form the basis of school evaluations into the effectiveness of classroom organisation. This report, and in particular the six principles on which it suggested effective organisational arrangements should rest, formed the organising framework for the study.
The study had three main aims:

    to ascertain the extent to which the principles outlined in the HMI report had been used by school staff when making decisions about which form of organisation to use

Summary In sum, through our projects these two students, the other 17 students, and myself, were making sociology of education relevant to our emerging personhood — to the person we are always becoming. It became less an abstract course title and more something we engaged in as part and parcel of our lives. In effect, we were beginning to develop a more community-oriented education by attempting to overcome what Jim Harding (1978, pp. 287–289) has characterized as the self-defeating polarizations of form and content of learning, of theory and practice, of political and personal matters.For me, there is no turning back. I do not think I'll ever again feel comfortable in a learning environment that is not moving toward the less-structured end of the continuum. Such an environment will not eliminate the hidden curriculum of institutional sexism, racism, and class bias which permeates this society and its schools at all levels. But as the data from this research indicate, constructing such an environment in your own classroom can make a difference — can be a long beginning step toward bringing inequities grounded in gender, ethnic, and socio-economic differences out of hiding. Then, and only then, can people openly acknowledge these differences and work on keeping some of the most destructive consequences that flow from them from being transmitted as miseducation from generation to generation.  相似文献
