In the mid 1990s the technical services division at Pennsylvania State University Libraries was re-organized into the team environment. Teams were created as self-directed work teams, and continued to function without any assessment until 1999 when an administrative change forced an examination of their effectiveness. Concerns regarding the team organization were solicited in the form of individual meetings. Issues raised were documented and presented to the University’s Human Resources Department. A formal teams assessment survey was undertaken. The survey results were used to develop a structured environment in which to respond to the concerns and issues raised by the staff. A Management System for Performance was written as a tool by which the library can re-engineer the teams.  相似文献

A review of library literature shows a general trend of technical services in academic libraries to reorganize into teams. This study used the critical incidents technique to gather the University Botswana Library staff's stories relating to the change management process during the implementation of e-resources projects. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 13 individuals who were involved in the implementation of various projects at the library. Data was analyzed using grounded theory techniques of open coding, selective coding, and axial coding. The results of the study showed that communication, investing in resources, capacity building, team building, garnering external support through collaboration, and users' involvement were key change management strategies used. The library staff were involved in the coordination of projects, systems selection, liaising with stakeholders and consultants, benchmarking, and conducting in-house training. The findings also showed some challenges encountered, which included staff ignorance, reluctance, and fear to take decisions, and inadequate training facilities. The study recommends dedicated project team members with reduced workload and having knowledge and skills to lead the teams to fully participate and engage in the project process.  相似文献

This paper advocates for employing graduate research teams as a way to train graduate students. Research teams allow for a community of scholars to share knowledge and exchange ideas. By employing an apprenticeship-type program for graduate students, they are provided an opportunity to transition from a student to a young scholar. Such training prepares students to develop and implement their own research programs and train their future graduate students. Graduate students can be involved in conceptualizing research questions, designing studies, developing measuring instruments, gathering and analyzing data, and more. Nonetheless, implementing and organizing research teams can be an arduous process that should not be entered into lightly. This paper provides ideas for the construction of teams as well as issues to consider before implementing the team concept.  相似文献

This article explores the way librarians define, leverage, and amplify expertise in a twenty-first century academic library. An expert team comprised of a nursing librarian, online learning librarian, information-literacy librarian, and assessment librarian sorted the learning outcomes from the Information-Literacy Competency Standards for Nursing created by the Health Sciences Interest Group taskforce of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) by grade-levels. Results found distinguishing experts within a library supports the customization of scaffolded instruction. Additionally, using expert teams in academic libraries supports the larger mission of universities to integrate libraries into teaching and research.  相似文献

Exploring the benefits of user education: a review of three case studies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper builds on Leslie Morton's vision of enabling users through education and training. It describes three different approaches to mediated training for medical students and clinicians provided by peers, juniors (i.e. medical students) and information specialists (i.e. clinical librarians) and considers the benefits to the participants. The training was provided either on a one-to-one basis or within teams in their work environments (e.g. offices, wards, team meetings). The first two projects (peer tutoring and reverse mentoring) suggest that contextualized training, using intermediaries, provides the direct benefit of cost-effective IT skill development and the indirect benefits deriving from the interactions between the trainers and the target groups. The third project, the outreach librarian study, provides evidence of both direct benefits (i.e. time saved, quality of service, skills acquired, financial savings and improved evidence-based medicine implementation) and indirect, long-term benefits relating to more social issues (e.g. perceptions of the library, clinical teams, job satisfaction and patient interactions). The general conclusion to emerge from this review of case studies is that the concept of educational benefits is very broad and that empirical studies need to look at both obvious and less obvious benefits.  相似文献

Background:The proliferation of systematic reviews has impacted library operations and activities as librarians support, collaborate, and perform more tasks in the systematic review process. This case report describes a toolkit that librarians with extensive experience in supporting multiple review teams use to manage time, resources, and expectations in the systematic review process.Case Presentation:The toolkit is a compilation of documents that we use to effectively communicate with and help review teams understand and navigate each stage of the systematic review process. Elements included in the toolkit and discussed in this case report are intake forms, communication templates and memoranda, a process flow diagram, library guides on tools for retrieval and data appraisal, and established standards for guidance during the write-up stage. We describe the use of the toolkit for both education and project management, with a focus on its use in helping manage team time, resources, and expectations.Discussion:The systematic review toolkit helps librarians connect systematic review steps and tasks to actionable items. The content facilitates and supports discussion and learning by both librarians and team members. This toolkit helps librarians share important information and resources for each stage of the process.  相似文献

This case study analyzes the use of library school interns on subject-based teams for the social sciences, humanities, and sciences in the San José State University Library. Interns worked closely with team librarians on reference, collection development/management, and instruction activities. In a structured focus group, interns reported that the internship enhanced their professional and career development, but they desired greater feedback and mentoring than they received. The library gained staff for its large instruction program and successfully recruited talented former interns for professional openings. This analysis will help other libraries and library science schools to improve their internships and field experiences.  相似文献

Libraries throughout the world are facing the dual challenge of an aging workforce and a workplace that is requiring significant reassessment of the skills base of its staff as a result of the impact of technology on the delivery of information services. The implications for libraries in responding to this environment are significant. This paper looks at the age profile of the library workforce and discusses the need for libraries to acknowledge and plan for the impending retirement of a significant proportion of their workforce. The paper argues that integral to this planning is the need to identify the skills and attributes required of library staff in both the short term and the long term. The response of some Australian academic libraries in preparing to address these challenges is described. Particular reference is made to strategies adopted at Queensland University of Technology Library in Brisbane, Australia to ensure that existing and new staff are equipped with the skills to be able to work in changing environments and that staff are provided with opportunities to develop leadership skills that will be required for the future.  相似文献

As fall 2020 semester approached, librarians at Colorado School of Mines faced the task of transitioning the information literacy lesson for the university's Design I course to a fully virtual lesson. In previous semesters, the lesson had successfully been taught using a flipped model; pairing an online lesson with an in-person librarian meeting. Each semester approximately 600 students in teams of five met with a librarian to discuss their approach to the course's semester-long project. Due to COVID-19, the team conducted more than 120 team meetings online using Zoom in fall 2020. Surveys were administered to students in the course to gauge their opinions on meeting success, librarian helpfulness and sign-up logistics. The findings provide insight into the use of an online meeting to meet the needs of students in a project-based engineering design course.  相似文献

[目的/意义]知识产权强国建设亟需大批法律性与专业性相结合的复合型人才。深入探讨高校图书馆专硕知识产权素养教育模式,对积极响应国家大力倡导的知识产权教育、有效发挥图书馆人才培养职能具有重要的意义。[方法/过程]首先结合培养目标和情境认知理论,科学分析专硕知识产权素质教育的特点及教学设计;其次以山东理工大学图书馆为例,从教师队伍建设、知识模块组织、教学模式设计和教育质量评价4个维度,探讨其在素质教育开展方面的实践;最后结合实践成效总结该图书馆在专硕知识产权素质教育中的创新,并就高校图书馆开展专硕知识产权素质教育的优势和策略给出总结和思考。[结果/结论]高校图书馆应凸显优势地位,充分调动与整合各类教学资源,在学校政策支持下勇于承担知识产权素质教育重任,彰显使命担当。  相似文献
