Peristeri means a clove in Greek. It's also the name of the area I was staying while I was visiting my grandmother's family in Athens, Greece. Surrounded by a myriad of unfamiliar faces, jetlagged and exhausted, I tried to make sense of all the buzzing conversations going on around me. Sitting on the veranda of my grandmother's sister's home in Peristeri, I studied the faces of my relatives; I barely knew any of them at the time, and the newness of my surroundings captivated me, regardless of my knee-trembling sleepiness.……  相似文献

我的人生观
How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people-first of all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness is wholly dependent, and then for the many, unknown to us, to whose destinies we are bound by the ties of sympathy. A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am often oppressively aware that I am engrossing an undue amount of the labor of my fellow-men. I regard class distinctions as unjustified and, in the last resort, based on force.I also believe that a simple and unassuming life is good for everybody, physically and mentally.  相似文献

In Groups——物以类聚 Yesterday, I took my mountain bike1 to the trails2. When I was passing by a pond, I saw a few Canada geese3 cruising on the water. Spring has come, and the geese are back from south and will soon be on their way farther north. The sight of the geese reminded me of a story our kindergarten teacher told us when we were very little. She said that men hunted wild geese for food and the geese didn't like them. So, the leader goose taught other geese to fly in the formation of "人" to remind everyone to keep away from men because they were the worst enemy of geese. Many years later, when I came to the United States, I saw geese fly in the same formation as they fly in the skies of China, and I was puzzled;  相似文献

I guess you could say my life began pretty normally. I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 24th, 1982. No big thing at all except for the fact that I was the first son of Terry and Kim Edwards and the first grandson for both sets of grandparents.  相似文献

Astring quartet plays in the background as I listen to a famous New Age guru perform a wedding ceremony on a Malibu cliff. The guru is marrying two friends of mine who met in an acting class last year. She turns to the groom and launches into a spiel about how from now on, he's going to make the bride's "heart his home." That's when I start to lose it, I feel the Malibu sun warming my shoulders and melting all my cynicism into a pool of mush. I grip my girlfriend's hand for support but she's doing worse than I am, wiping her teary eyes on a scarf.  相似文献

The Last Leaf
“When the last leaf falls, I must go too. I am tired of waiting. I am tired of thinking. I want to turn loose my hold on everything and go sailing down, down, just like one of those poor tired leaves.” I suppose all that are familiar with the American writer O.Henry and his masterpiece “The Last Leaf may remember the above-mentioned words said by the critically sick artist Joseph at her last gasp. On my first reading the novel, I thought these words was a bit strong. Not until recently do I come to realize what Joseph said actually is the alarm to us all.  相似文献

Invisible Racial Disparities 隐形的种族差异 One aftemoon when I was going out to do some errands (差事),I sew three young men, about 15 to 17 years of age, standing in front of a house in my neighborhood, chatting and laughing.I took a notice of them because they looked different and kind of out of place:They were not white.I continued on to run my errands without thinking too much of it.When I came back about an hour later, there was a police car parked in front of the house where these young folks were. After I drove around the comer,I saw a second police car,and one of the three youths was in the back seat of the car, handcuffed (带着手铐),with two officers questioning him.A thought shot across my mind:Are these young people members of a local youth gang,or are they just in a wrong neighborhood?  相似文献

After pinning on my volunteer badge, I settled down into my weekly routine at a local nursing home setting up Pokeno games, wheeling residents onto the veranda, and reading newspapers to the residents. At first, I did not expect my volunteer work to make much of a difference because it was all very simple tasks that anyone could do.……  相似文献

I once stayed at St Paul's Grammar School in Sydney, Australia, as a visiting teacher for two months. From the moment I got there till the time I left, I seldom felt lonely and homesick. I know that's because Australian people are friendly to us and willing to help us. My friend Patsy Beckett is one of them.Patsy, (Mrs. Beckett) is the Principal's Personal Assistant at the school. Though she is busy all the time, she has arranged my visit in great detail. The first day I came to school she took me to my homestay's house herself, and there I found some beautiful flowers and nice fruit on the desk in my room. I thought this was a nice gesture of friendship.  相似文献
