The examination of research theses has only relatively recently attracted research interest that has focused on what examiners do and how consistent they are. The research questions in this study address firstly whether PhD and research masters theses were treated by examiners as qualitatively different on 12 indicators of importance across the areas: contribution of the thesis, the literature review, approach and methodology, analyses and results and presentation. Secondly what was the examiner assessment of quality of a recently examined thesis on the same indicators and, finally, how well the indicators were reflected in a holistic assessment of thesis quality. The work reported here draws on the responses of 353 PhD and 74 research masters thesis examiners. Findings showed the examiners generally rated the relative importance of the indicators very similarly at both degree levels. Further the order of importance across indicators was essentially the same for the two levels of thesis. Anticipated differences did emerge with the examiners giving higher quality gradings for all contribution indicators for PhD as compared with research masters theses. The 12 specific quality indicators, individually and collectively were strongly related to the holistic assessment of thesis quality, particularly at the PhD level.  相似文献

Encouraging doctoral students to publish during their candidature is becoming more widely accepted and practised, both in Australia and internationally, although it is still less common in some fields. Almost all universities in Australia now offer candidates an option to include publications in their doctoral thesis. This paradigm shift has occurred over several decades as the role of doctoral education has been debated, but guidelines for students, supervisors and examiners have yet to catch up. While various benefits, challenges and criticisms have been discussed by established academics, the voices of the candidates themselves are limited. Using a narrative inquiry approach, this study helps to fill that void by reporting the personal experiences of the author, who recently completed a thesis with publications (TWP) in education. As such, this paper not only illuminates the potential challenges for doctoral candidates but it also offers possible ways in which universities, supervisors, examiners and candidates themselves can make the path to completing a doctoral TWP easier to navigate.  相似文献

对瑞典博士生培养模式及特点进行分析,认为从入学、中期的学习和科研能力培养到博士论文撰写、评审阶段,导师介入的力度大,学生自由发挥的空间大。首先导师负责严格控制入学生源质量,中期对学生指导力度大,对博士论文质量严格把关,导师的直接指导在学生的科研成果中占重要比重;学生在学习和科研阶段的科研和创新能力培养拥有很好的学术氛围和条件保障,并具有较多合作和交流机会;博士论文的撰写形式灵活,但评审严格,对答辩组织高度重视。这些培养模式及特点对于培养创新能力强、综合素质高的科研人才有着很好的保证作用,值得借鉴。  相似文献

There is increasing impetus for higher-degree-by-research students to publish during candidature. Research performance, including higher degree completions and publication output, commonly determines university funding, and doctorates with publishing experience are better positioned for a career in softening academic labour markets. The PhD by Publication provides a pathway for candidates to foster and demonstrate their publishing capabilities. It also provides existing academics a means of achieving doctoral status while managing the ‘publish or perish’ milieu endemic to their work. This paper clarifies the precise nature and significance of the PhD by Publication pathway in the Australian context and discusses the associated benefits and problems, enriched by personal experience. It summarises factors pertinent to assessing the pathway's suitability. The review of current policy suggests institutional guidelines in universities nationwide are inadequate for producing theses of comparable quality to conventional dissertations and capitalising on the pathway's significant benefits.  相似文献

针对一般高等院校的计算机专业本科毕业生,提出一种毕业论文写作框架,它纵向具有层次性,横向具有演绎性。层次性指出论文的构成要素,据此学生可以按部就班地进行论文写作;演绎性指出论文内容的逻辑顺序,强调论文构成要素的有机性。经过教学实践,基于该框架的毕业论文指导得到了学生的普遍认可和欢迎。  相似文献

本科论文的抄袭现象日渐普遍,其成因有内因和外因两个方面。内因主要有学生的写作能力、课程设置、老师的指导、学校对论文的要求等;外因主要有学生写作的时间、学校关于论文的执行理念、网络资源的丰富等。针对上述成因,本文提出了加强学生综合素质教育、合理定位本科生毕业论文、加强老师对学生的论文指导及严把质量关等对策和措施。  相似文献

Current statistics show that the attrition rate among PhD candidates is high (i.e. from 30% to 40% depending on the discipline and the country). This high-attrition rate has an impact on both economic (e.g. negative impact on the return-on investment in doctoral education) and human levels (e.g. negative consequences on candidates’ self-esteem and well-being). Therefore, it seems important to better understand and to prevent the attrition among PhD candidates. Based on the needs–supplies fit theory, the present research focused on the perception of a fit between several PhD candidates’ work-related needs in terms of employment quality and the characteristics of their job to explain their intention to quit their PhD thesis process. This study was based on 160 Belgian PhD candidates, viewed as traditional workers in the Belgian doctoral system, who were still in their thesis process. Data were collected in one Belgian university. Globally, results shown that only the fit perception between the needs for fairness/recognition from the supervisor and the current job situation was significantly associated with lower intention to quit. Thus, we encourage Universities to develop and boost fairness and recognition from thesis supervisors through notably specific training programmes including supportive and justice-based practices.  相似文献

结合学位论文写作对社会科学研究的基本方法与路线进行深度分析。在西方理论与中国经验的嫁接方面,研究者不能盲从西方理论,需要秉持“理论自觉”的学术路线。在量化研究与质性研究之间,不能舍此即彼,而是要力图进行综合性的分析。在田野研究路径层面,需要结合“自上而下”与“自下而上”两条路径,同时需要综合农村快速评估与扎根田野研究。而研究资料的收集,需要综合运用文献法、参与式观察法和深度访谈法。在资料分析方面需要注意客观性,并能在“小社区”中透视“大社会”。最后,学位论文写作需要经过不断的“破题”和“立题”。  相似文献

This study examined data relating to 125 part‐time masters candidates in education. In particular, the study considered various structural aspects of candidature and examiners’ concerns regarding the theses submitted by these candidates. Some of the structural components considered were the choice of thesis weighting in the degree, completion time, suspension and extension of candidature, course work grades, agreement between examiners and the level of honours awarded. An analysis of thesis examiners’ reports revealed a diversity in the nature of criticism made. Criticism related to such things as the review of literature, writing style, typographical and spelling errors, conclusions reached and the theoretical framework used. In many instances the nature of examiners’ criticism raised questions as to the role that thesis supervisors are expected to perform.  相似文献

本文选取了博士生论文的确定途径、博士生的研究与导师研究之间的关系、博士生跟导师探讨博士论文的频率和博士生对导师指导论文的认可程度这四个维度,比较分析了中日两国博士生学习与生活的数据.结果发现,我国博士生在学位论文指导过程中需要进一步提高科研自主性和独立性,加强导师与博士生之间的互动,更好地发挥导师的引导和决策作用,才能提高博士生创新能力,保证博士生培养的质量.  相似文献
