Before committing an institution to the purchase of microform serials it is important to approach the problem from a systems point of view. (a) Density of projected or actual use of specific titles should be determined and evaluated relative to the entire serials collection. (b) This will enable the serials librarian to decide whether unitized (microfiche and microcard) or linear (microfilm) storage is preferable. (c) Having made this basic decision, the selection of the best quality microforms should be made, relying on an understanding of micropublishing processes used by specific producers. (d) The hardware problem can then be addressed after these preliminary questions have been answered. (e) Finally, the interrelated problems of bibliographic accessing/cataloging/ storage are confronted. Each institution must do its own systems analysis: on the adequacy of this analysis hinges the adequacy of its information system. 相似文献

Whether or not uniform titles serve any useful purpose has been debated almost since their implementation in 1981 with the adoption of AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules. Second Edihon). The problems posed by a separate bibliographic record for each physical manifestation of the same intellectual work (e.g., original, reprint, microfilm) apply to some extent to all categories of material, but present special problems for union lists of serials. This article discusses these two problem areas of serials cataloging. A proposed solution to the multiple versions dilemma is also briefly discussed. 相似文献

The major serials collections in Australia have been seriously affected by adverse economic trends and changing collection development policies. The university libraries now have a crucial role to play in preserving and improving the quality of Australia's serials resources. The use of microforms in libraries has grown over the past ten years, and microform will continue to be an appropriate medium for preserving certain types of materials. The future use of microforms is clouded by the potential storage capabilities of the new disc technologies. Yet noteworthy advances have been made in the bibliographic control of microforms and in the quality of readers and printers available. AbstractRecent developments have altered the work performed in library technical services. As with similar positions, responsibilities for serials/continuing resources catalogers have experienced changes. This study examined qualifications sought by employers between the period from January 1, 2002 to May 21, 2017. Through content analysis of job advertisements, with emphasis on professional-level cataloging of serials/continuing resources, this study found a demand for a diverse mix of both traditional and emerging skills. Serials are a familiar academic job responsibility, but serials librarians are becoming difficult to identify. While serials continue to exist, the transition from print to electronic resources contributes to a trend in which the job titles of librarians who manage serials no longer include the word “serials.” A content analysis was conducted to examine the prevalence of the word “serials,” as well as common synonyms including “continuing resources” and “periodicals,” in U.S. and non-U.S. academic library job titles. In a sample of 98 U.S. national and regional universities and colleges, 18 librarian and 98 staff job titles were found that included the word “serials” or a synonym for serials. By comparison, a sample of 71 universities from 8 non-U.S. countries revealed 17 librarian and 85 staff job titles that included the word “serials” or a synonym for serials. 相似文献

After boxes of uncataloged microforms were discovered at my library, we learned that many of the titles were available as free electronic books, so I added bibliographic records to the local catalog for the e-versions. Some bibliographic records existed in OCLC WorldCat for the electronic versions, but they were not always provider-neutral. I learned how to create the new provider-neutral record and want to share my experience. Other librarians may want to replicate my project at their institutions, weeding their microforms and supplanting those records with e-book bibliographic records, thereby providing instant online access to these resources for their patrons. 相似文献

Abstract An overview of traditional methods of evaluating serials collections and serial titles is presented and applied to electronic resources. Traditional methods such as holdings, checklist, conspectus, availability studies, document delivery studies, citation studies and use studies used for the evaluation of serials collections in print can be modified for the evaluation of electronic serials collections. A revolution in serials work has occurred during the last decade as libraries have moved from manual operations to the age of automation. For economic and technological reasons, a renewed interest in the organization of serials activities has developed, and there is debate between those who favor continuing the separate serials department (organization by form) and those who favor merging serials activities into other departments (organization by function).
