Idioms are gems of a language which have been refined through ages of use. Idioms are thus always rich in cultural connotation and national flavor. Lots of cultural information is embedded in idioms. Language is a part of culture. Language is the important carrier of culture. Language and culture have close relationship with each other. The study of the relationship between language and culture has been considered a subject of great value. Owing to this, translation theorists and translators have put more attention to the cultural barriers that exist in translation. Therefore, translators have to better understand the relationship between language and culture and the relationship between culture and translation so as to render idioms from the SL into the TL faithfully and effectively.  相似文献

In recent years,it has become a hot topic for researchers to explore the relationships between language and culture, language and translation,or culture and translation.Indeed, the three aspects are inseparable.Language is the carrier of culture and also restricted by culture.Translation mostly takes place between languages and it is a kind of cross-linguistic and intercultural communicative activity. While translating,it is necessary to understand thoroughly the two languages, but also two cultures and cultural differences between them.In this paper,I firstly give a general review on both the conception of language, culture and translation and their relationship and then discussed the interaction and blending separately from the two phenomena of culture-orientation in translation and translation under culture context.Since culture is transmitted mostly by language, cultural elements and factors should be taken into consideration in translation practices. To achieve the goal of translation in a real sense, translation practices should be based on the principle of processing the discourse of source language and target language under the perspective of its cultural context.  相似文献

If Taiwan's indigenous people are not able to save their own languages, they will lose their ways of thinking, cultural heritage, and the relation to the rest of the universe that distinguishes them as indigenous peoples. Taiwan is a multi-ethnic country. Although the majority of the population is comprised of Han speakers, there is also a significant indigenous Austronesian-speaking population. The multiple cultural manifestations of the indigenous people of Taiwan enrich the overall culture of Taiwan's society. Under the influences of globalization and colonial governance, indigenous peoples are facing the disappearance of their traditional languages and cultures. Therefore, Taiwan needs to carefully handle the topic of the development of its people's cultures; otherwise, it is not difficult to see the outcome of cultural assimilation due to encroachment by mainstream cultural dominance. Education is the best method of helping protect and revitalize non-dominant cultures and their languages; by the same token, it is also the most effective means of cultural assimilation. What course should indigenous education take? From the development of local culture subject to current stage of dialects subject, indigenous languages are still highly subject to the nightmare of extinction. Thus, in this paper, the author analyzes the development status of Maori education in New Zealand, with the aim of providing Taiwan's education authorities with different viewpoints for consideration so that appropriate educational methods may be applied for the development of indigenous people, and also appeal to Taiwan's indigenous people to take on the challenge of ridding themselves of the rigid modes of thought caused by colonial education, and, from the bottom-up, contribute their efforts for the sake of revitalizing the languages and cultures of their people.  相似文献

Translation is formally a process of language transferring but in essence a process of intercultural communication. Translation serves as a bridge of communication between people from different cultures. Language, culture and communication form the basis of translation. Successful translation requires proficiency in languages and complete understanding two relevant cultures. This paper elaborates on five common cultural obstacles hindering CE translation: cultural differences, cultural conflicts, culturalloaded words or expressions, cultural defaults, and cultural images and then gives corresponding translation solutions.  相似文献

Language and culture are intrinsically interconnected and interactive with each other. On one hand, language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it:language expresses, embodies and symbolizes cultural reality. On the other, language is influenced and shaped by culture;it reflects culture. This kind of relationship of language and culture is indispensible, which is clearly reflected in and especially ture with their play of roles in communication.Through the overviews of language and culture, and based on the case studies of three types of communication(cross-cultural,intercultural and multicultural communication),this article is aimed at discussing the relationship of language and culture in detail from the perspective of communication, and further explain and prove the importance of language and culture in successful communication.  相似文献

Metaphor is a common linguistic phenomenon and always realizes its value within a certain context.Metaphor uses words to indicate something different from their literal meaning-one thing is described in terms of another so as to suggest a likeness or analogy between them.A metaphor can easily be seen as a bridge which links and comprises the known and the unknown, the familiar and the unfamiliar. Some people hold that metaphor tends to be seen as a way of coloring the ordinary plain language.Meanwhile some people think that metaphor is regarded as a way of experiencing the world. An analysis on English and Chinese metaphor translation will help to strengthen our understanding of different languages as well as different cultures. This paper focuses on the structure and features of metaphor, correspondences and several techniques in metaphor translation.  相似文献

As a form of cultural exchanges,it isn’t avoidable for translation and culture to be closely connected and influenced by each other. In the translation process, target work is influenced by all kinds of cultural elements so that target work is different from source work in some degree. The content of source work remains the same, but the form of that is changed more or less as the result of the target language culture.Sometimes the culture of the source language and that of the target language may be on equal footing complementary but sometimes they might be unequal because of their different position of comparative advantages, one culture is neglected. The cultural elements of translator have a great influence on the target work. The target work is the recreation of the translator.  相似文献

Language and culture are closely related with each other: language is the carrier and a fundamental part of culture, while culture has an intrinsic and indispensable impact on language and is also reflected in language. So if in the language learning and teaching, attention is only paid to the linguistic forms but the relationship between language and culture is ignored, then the learner’s linguistic ability will not be equivalent to his or her social and cultural communication competence. Especially in the times of globalization with increasing transna tional and cross-cultural communication, the knowledge of cultural background is the must prerequisite for not only the avoidance of cul tural "conflict" but the success of communication. Based on the studies of several cross-cultural communication cases and the analysis of the relationship between language and culture, including the famous Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, this paper is aimed to analyze the intrinsic and in dispensable relationship between language learning and culture learning.  相似文献

Many countries have language policies with the purpose of promoting or discouraging the use of a particular language or a set of languages. In a multilingual country, the official language(s) is always favored by the national language policy; in contrast, the minority languages, to some extent, are hindered in their development. This paper, by the case studies of minority languages in New Zealand, Netherlands, and China, illustrates the effects of these countries’ general language policies on their minority languages. Minority languages are seen as a part of cultural identity of minority groups. To protect their own culture and identity, they devote themselves to seek the equal right for their languages and cultures. In making language policies, the authorities should give respect and regard to the minority languages.  相似文献

The paper is trying to analyse idioms both in China and in England from varied aspects to help translators gain a better under standing of the language itself.Because of the differences from genercal culture, conventional culture, religious culture, historical culture, thoughts of numeral, expression of color, understanding of objective things, translators must adopt different methods of translation.More over,a translator should make continuous comparisons between our two cultures because translation equivalence and its very sense should be matched in meanings, functions, scopes and feelings in the two cultures.  相似文献

Because different peoples have different environments, customs, ways of thinking, religious beliefs, regimes, literature and arts and ways of living, there is no surprise that colors are described diversely in different countries. And they show the partic ular personalities of each nation. And language is not only the carrier of culture, but also it is an important part of culture. In oth er words, culture includes and influences language.People could know culture through language. So only when people combine culture with language can they succeed in communicating with each other. There are various color terms in both Chinese and English, and which have similar or different associations, indications and connotations. So to have a good mastery of the differenc es and similarities of these words and their associations, indications and cultural connotations is a prerequisite for a better under standing of the different cultures of eastern and western countries, which will make the communication easier. This paper will ex plain the four colors:red, white, black and yellow.  相似文献

①The world today is characterized by a growing number of contacts which results in communication between people with different cultural background .This communication takes place because of contacts within the areas of business, military cooperation, science, education, massmedia, entertainment, tourism and etc. ②In all these contacts, communication needs to be as constructive as possible, without misunderstandings and breakdowns. It is our belief that research on'the nature of cultural differences here can play a positive and constrcitve role.③I wanted to convey a deeper message: "No culture is inferior to another and human civilization is the combination of all cultures,Thus, communication, mutual understanding and tolerance are conducive to the development of peace and harmony."  相似文献

This paper explores the relationship between the original and its translation by interpreting Benjamin’s three metaphors from his The Translator’s Task. The exploration starts with the metaphor of“the tangent of a circle”,where it is interpreted that although the translated version should be faithful to its original in terms of meaning, yet it is a deviation due to different internal and external factors. Then,in the metaphor of“afterlife”,the discussion demonstrates that the translated version proceeds from the original, but the original depends on it for its survival and afterlife in different eras. Later, based on the metaphor of“fragments of a vessel”,the author states that the original and its translation are equal and complementary, just like the fragments of a vessel, responsible for the development and renewal of each other through translation. Finally,it is concluded that a better understanding of their relationship can offer us a new perspective in translation studies and practice.  相似文献

Politeness is a very important topic in modern linguistics. With the development of the study of linguistics, a lot of people lay the emphasis on the study of politeness language. It can be observed in all languages and cultures as a social phenomenon, which plays an important role in individuals’ linguistic behavior. But due to different culture, different politeness principles and other reasons, different peo ple have different understandings about the definition of politeness, and they deal with politeness in different ways. Through different study background, principle and theory, this paper focuses on the politeness language in English and Chinese culture caused the differences. Politeness languages are mainly expressed in the forms of address, greeting, congratulation, appreciation and apology . The biggest difference between English and Chinese is that the Chinese system is profusion and complicated, but the English one is quite simple. Age, income, marriage and religion, etc. are taboos in English and people in western countries like to talk about weather when they meet each other; greeting in Chinese almost includes different things about one’s life. Appreciation in Chinese is not used frequently. Peo ple do not often say "thank you" to their families or friends. Appreciation in English can be used among families, friends, and colleagues and so on. At the end of this thesis, a conclusion is drawn; limitations and some suggestions of the research are stated!  相似文献

Different nations have different social cultures, and the social culture of every nation is developing with the development of the nation, language is greatly influenced by social culture, which enables language to possess national and historical characteristics. Word is the smallest, independent, meaningful linguistic unit of language. It can well reflect the national and historical characteristics. From synchronic aspect, the social and cultural influence on word meaning is mainly embodied in conceptual and associative meanings of word. The incorrespondence of word meaning is a phenomenon that exists in both conceptual and associative meanings of word among different languages. From diachronic aspect, the development of social culture causes some changes of word meaning to some extent. Therefore, social culture plays a key role in vocabulary learning and mastery of a language.  相似文献
