The objective of this article is to describe the historical development of sport and exercise psychology, with a particular emphasis on the construction and evolution of the “box” through history. The box represents the dominant paradigm that serves as the model for research and application as it evolves through successive historical eras (Kuhn, 1962). Seven historical eras related to the development of sport and exercise psychology are discussed. Of particular interest for this review were individuals whose curiosity and motivation established the roots for the study of sport and exercise psychology, as well as the controversies and tensions in both kinesiology and psychology that shaped the fi eld. Suggestions for the future include a problem-based approach to scholarship and a cultural praxis version of sport and exercise psychology to enhance relevancy and social impact.  相似文献

Abstract

The sport-for-all movement currently evident in many countries of the world is often touted as a self-evidently desirable means of achieving physical fitness on a global scale. But is sport truly a veritable route to collective wellbeing or some fantastic aggrandisement of a Western canon? This article challenges the cherished myth that sport is essentially meant for all regardless of context. The discursive background of sport for all was viewed through the lens of political economic relations and the dominant discourse of recreation and leisure. To be sure, sport for all has the ring of commonsense viewed from the North, yet it has a different resonance when examined from the South: it is a big, staggering plot to repress and diminish the cultural significance of the indigenous games of Third World people. This article takes stock of the lessons from the Dar es Salaam Sport for All project and stresses the need for African countries to resist any homogenising sport discourses premised against the reclamation of discursively constituted local games and indigenous physical education pedagogy. It argues that precolonial African games need not be uprooted from the physical education curriculum for colonial sports to roost, as these games have locus standi where Western sports stand. It suggests the need for deconstructive discourses that are conducive to the renovation and institution of indigenous African games as a step towards maintaining cultural distinctiveness and deconstructing totalising images of physical education curriculum content.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Building on a long-term university/community research partnership, this article examines how different ways of conceptualizing, interpreting, and producing murals impacted how an urban community saw itself. Using a participatory action research design, university researchers worked alongside community researchers to ethnographically document the transformation. Findings indicate that the mural project constructed pathways for building relationships and community in ways that made neighborhood transformation possible. The mural project embodied this transformative goal by providing a space where people gathered with shared attention to talk and to envision how their lives and their community could be different.  相似文献

The paper describes the organization and technical details of an undergraduate project that culminated at the IJCAI robot competition in August 1995. As part of the project, a team of five undergraduate students designed and built an autonomous minirobot that was able to detect cups and cans, pick them up, and bring them to the appropriate trash or recycling bin. The robot was named Walleye, the state fish of Minnesota that is known for its voracious appetite.

The limited size of the memory and the limited speed of the microcontroller have dictated most of the design choices. Walleye was, by far, the cheapest of all the entries in the competition, and performed well obtaining the third place. More important, working on the project has been a tremendous educational experience for the students in the team.

This project is part of a larger effort aimed at exposing undergraduate students to a variety of projects in robotics, computer vision, and 3D modeling. We have chosen these topics as the sources of projects because of their interdisciplinary nature and because they provide a wide variety of problems where system integration, communication, and cooperation are important, and where the “fun” of building and programming a robot is a highly motivating force for the learning process.  相似文献

随着社会发展,竞技体育运动项目早已屹立于体育文化的历史舞台,而蕴涵着丰富的东方文化特色的民族传统体育运动项目,更是物以稀为贵,很值得我国国民去开发、挖掘。龙狮运动项目作为我国民族传统体育运动项目之一,充分体现出它内在的观赏价值、健身价值、文化传承价值。据调查资料显示:目前全国部分普通高校在体育教学中将龙狮这一民族传统体育运动项目以选修课程列入教学中,但是与之相应的教材编写却很少,学生知识来源渠道有限,所以本文通过专家访谈、问卷调查,从龙狮运动项目的教学方法、教学手段方面进行阐述,旨在为民族传统体育龙狮运动项目进入普通高校后如何建设,提出一点建议。  相似文献

Abstract

We describe a successful collaboration between mathematics and psychological science faculty members to create a learning community for our students that linked sections of introductory mathematical reasoning and psychological science courses. The students in our learning community were in their second or third semester. The learning community is designed so that, throughout the semester, students regularly move across the border between the two linked disciplines by completing common assignments, including a group project. We modified our existing course topics and frameworks to be intentional about building connections between the courses.  相似文献

Abstract

With the start of the development of natural protected areas, many approaches with regard to management of wildlife appeared to have neglected the involvement of local people.

During the past few decades the Local Resource Management (LRM) topic has increasingly captured attention. Instead of a top-down based approach to management, LRM tries to involve local people in the management of natural resources. The CAMPFIRE programme in Zimbabwe is an example of an LRM based project, in which active participation of local people is the central theme. This project is based on utilization of wildlife resources and management by communities living with wildlife. The goal is to reach an effective participation of local people which intends to involve them in the design and implementation of wildlife projects, so that these projects will reflect people's needs more accurately (IIED, 1994).

According to the authors of the book “Whose Eden” (IIED, 1994) three broad principles should be fulfilled in order to achieve effective participation of communities with regard to the conservation of wildlife. In short these principles include:
  • 1. recognition of local community right to ownership of wildlife resources

  • 2. building on formal and informal structures that facilitate community participation in wildlife management

  • 3. operation of effective mechanisms for the sharing of benefits of wildlife resources with communities

In CAMPFIRE, the implementation of these principles turned out to be somewhat disappointing. First, the producer communities are restricted to their role of producer, instead of having become owners of wildlife resources. Second, participation of communities is mainly restricted to the project implementation. The goal was, though, to involve communities in all stages of the project. Finally, benefits to the communities arising from the management of wildlife should equally be distributed parallel to the disadvantages caused by wildlife. At the moment benefits are not equally shared within the communities.

In practice the principles to achieve effective participation are not working out well. It may be on account of the fact that the formulated principles are simply not realistic enough on which to base local resource management. In our opinion, the principles are too utopian. Little attention is paid to the complexity of social reality, for example, the different and conflicting interests of various stakeholders are not taken into consideration.  相似文献

Abstract

This article describes the organization and implementation of a class survey project. The exercise, which can be applied across disciplines, may be tied to course materials or campus activities. Three surveys conducted by the authors and their students are detailed and the students' roles in the projects are discussed. Students benefit from the group survey projects by gaining valuable experience under the guidance of their professors.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Despite common claims that society is “post-racial” and that sport is apolitical, issues of racial injustice continue to permeate sport and recreational institutions. Drawing insight from critical race theory, we articulate a vision of social justice oriented toward illuminating and addressing issues of racial injustice in sport and recreation. In particular, we highlight pressing matters of racial injustice in sport at the elite, competitive levels, as well as community and recreational settings. We also discuss contemporary examples and strategies for resisting racial injustice, noting the challenges and difficulties associated with various approaches. In doing so, we hope to provide direction for scholars and activists in fighting for social justice with respect to racism and racial inequality in sport.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper describes a university action research project which is developing culturally relevant courses for families of Asian heritage in East Lancashire. The authors describe the process of do, review and re‐application of new insights as courses are developed bilingually in the community and in the mother tongue, followed by more recent efforts to foster appropriate guidance and accreditation strategies which respect different culture values. The authors emphasise the importance of the first community based, non accreditation phase of the project in making links and building up mutual understanding of the issues involved. The focus throughout the courses is on ensuring a cultural perspective which is promoted by role model tutors and development staff who respond to a wide range of learner motives and starting points in order to facilitate progression and curriculum change in the mainstream.

The second phase adopts strategies which will enable closer links with mainstream provision. This is done by adopting a holistic approach to educational guidance, selecting sympathetic university staff to become involved in assessment procedures for new Foundation and Certificate level modules and also a whole family project which links schools, families and the university. The latter is in the form of a shared course between schools, university and participants to explore myths and expectations about university education. Whilst this activity is not in itself an accredited course, it is devised as a form of educational guidance activity but with the continued ethos of focusing on community concerns and relating to families on their terms through role models and culturally relevant activities. The paper concludes by emphasising the need for continuity of communication with communities if progress is to be made. The development of a ‘black’ perspective in mainstream accredited provision requires credibility, both in the community and in the university, and can only be achieved slowly over time.  相似文献

This chapter examines the confluence of bereavement, cultural competence, and incest as experienced in the brief treatment of a Cambodian-born clinical psychology graduate student. Abstract

This article describes two collaborative research projects whose common goal was to explore the potential role of professional controversies in building teachers’ summative assessment capacity. In the first project, upper primary teachers were encouraged to compare their practices through a form of social moderation, without prior instructor input or theoretical preparation. In the second project, lower secondary school teachers were encouraged to compare their summative assessment practices with reference to a theoretical model of curriculum alignment, under the guidance of an instructor. The findings support the potentially constructive role of professional controversies in supporting teachers’ professional development for summative assessment. They highlight the status of references called upon in discussion of controversies, and their contribution to the construction of the subjects under discussion.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Telling stories through photographs is certainly not a new or novel concept; however, thinking about image-making as a way of unknowing what we currently know is quite different from traditional approaches to photography. Built on an existing conceptual framework, writings on unknowing, we apply unknowing as a guiding method and heuristic to understand what a group of young people are trying to say and reimagine through the act of image-making. Research reported in this article from the Community Arts Zone visual arts project features a series of photograph projects across high school contexts where students created a Cindy Sherman-style conceptual photograph with an artist statement. The researchers engaged in a process of unknowing to interpret the photographs where they read through the visuals and engaged with modes in play and with observational fieldnotes about participants to draw out implications for such work for literacy teaching and learning.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In an undergraduate families and communities course situated at a university in the borderlands of the United States and Mexico, early childhood majors have used Black feminist thought combined with photovoice to generate projects that explore family and community experiences with power and oppression. As a professor, teaching assistant, and student enrolled in the course, we share our conceptualization of Black feminist photovoice, student trends and issues engaging with photovoice throughout the semester, and provide an example culminating project that focuses on colonization. By describing students’ engagement with Black feminist photovoice, we illustrate how transformative spaces can be forged in early childhood teacher education, where students critically examine the struggles and empowerment of marginalized communities, and generate possibilities to serve as agents of social justice and change.  相似文献
