Although the concept of browsing rooms or enrichment collections is not a new one in academic libraries, there is very little recent literature regarding the nature of such collections and a dearth of literature addressing thc importance of collection development policies for such collections. This paper describes Selectors with Collection Overlap in Psychology Entente (SCOPE), a group of bibliographers at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, and the process used to identify gaps and overlaps in psychology collection development. The project included informal meetings, the development of a directory, and creation of a worksheet correlating Psychological Abstracts classified headings with call numbers and Research Libraries Group (RLG) conspectus levels. The process is compared to Hale's theoretical framework from library research.  相似文献

Recent concerns with collection development policies, preservation, and security have led libraries to consider transfer of materials from their general stacks to special collections as a part of collection management. This article explores the implementation of special collections interlibrary loan policies and procedures at the University of South Florida (USF), focusing particularly on the development of policies related to physically loaning published materials, and traces the development of these policies through a pilot project to routinized implementation. Particular attention is paid to developing mutually beneficial workflows between special collections and interlibrary loan departments, creating transparent policies for the criteria under which requests are or are not filled, and technical considerations for implementing special collections loans. Through this case study, we highlight the potential for collaboration in the fulfillment of special deliveries.  相似文献

This article reports the findings of a survey conducted in 1986 of music collections in academic libraries of the Association of Research Libraries. There were five sections in the survey instrument: (1) General Information; (2) Staffing and Location of the Music Collection; (3) Collection Development Policies and Procedures; (4) Collection Evaluation Policies and Procedures; and (5) Tables. These sections correspond to the major questions which initiated the survey: (I) Where did Louisiana State University (LSU) rank in music holdings and budget among the respondents? (2) In relation to collection size and budget how did LSU compare in staffing, and where did the majority of other ARL libraries house their material? (3) How many libraries had collection development policies as guidelines for developing their collections? (4) How many libraries had formal collection evaluation procedures, and what bibliographic sources were used for this (5) How did other institutions view the provision of chamber music "performance parts" and "elementary/secondary classroom materials" in a research collection, and what were the collection preferences for certain book, non-book, and score materials?  相似文献

This article puts the need for writing a collection development manual in its historical context. It discusses the reasons for producing a collection development manual: to smooth out the functioning of the processing operation; to consider all collection development assumptions; to stimulate both the authors and the users of the manual to discuss important issues in collection development; to reduce bibliographer stress by specifying procedures for collection development: and to provide evaluation criteria for bibliographers. The article distinguishes two types of manuals: the training manual and the reference manual. The training manual provides the novice bibliographer with a comprehensive understanding of the materials selection environment: the structure of the subject field, the library holdings, collection usage patterns, the budget situation, the library's collection development policies, and the library materials market. The reference manual provides a compilation of internal policies and procedures to be consulted by bibliographers when such knowledge is required. It is suggested that a reference manual be organized around the following topics: materials selection, budgeting, purchase, review, and use.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Royal British Columbia Museum (RBCM), Canada, houses a collection of almost 7 million artifacts, archival records, and natural history specimens. Three comprehensive collection risk assessments over the past decade have resulted in improvements to the physical environments of the collections as well as new policies and procedures to reduce risk. However, there remain ongoing risks that can only be mitigated through major facility renewal. The last collection risk assessment, completed in 2016, was revisited to review the data and build a defensible case for funding to replace the RBCM's on-site collection storage facilities. Changes to overall collections risk is a complex function of collection development and use trends, evolving risk factors both internal and external to the museum, a growing understanding of the relationship between risks and preservation, in addition to reduction due to risk mitigation projects and building systems aging and wearing out. A defensible method for illustrating the facilities-related risks over time involves estimating the expected loss of individual collection items or loss in value of a group of items that may occur if a major facility upgrade or redevelopment is not realized in the near future. Risk assessment data for representative collection units were reviewed to differentiate risk due to permanent facility characteristics versus more active controls, operations budget controlled risk versus capital budget controlled risk, and collection management-controlled risk versus facility management-controlled risk. This enabled the risk model to isolate risks that could only be mitigated through major facility upgrades. Change in collection value was expressed as Object Equivalents Lost (OEL) and its compliment Object Equivalents Remaining (OER). Projections into the future indicating the effect of varying facility renewal dates could then be clearly shown. Losses, when presented as numbers of items expected to be lost from the collection, become emotionally salient to persons in senior management and governance roles.  相似文献

This study assesses the reference collection management practices and strategies used in the reference departments of academic members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Librarians who participate in the management of the humanities and social science reference collections within ARL member libraries responded to an online survey about collection development policies, acquisition processes, collection use, weeding, and marketing of their reference collections. The results of this survey suggest that a large percentage of academic ARL member libraries are weeding their collections regularly, measuring use of the print and electronic reference collection, and moving decidedly toward electronic reference materials.  相似文献

This article analyzes the topic of collection development and how it relates to new professionals in the field of librarianship. The article contains a literature review of papers discussing the collection development curriculum in library and information science programs, expected skills required of collection development offices, and library training programs for new librarians. The article also provides practical advise by recent graduates and their collection development experiences. Reference collection development should be seen as an integral part of the overall management of academic research library collections. The reference librarian benefits from participation in the development of collection development policy statements based on a collection evaluation using the Research Libraries Group (RLG) Conspectus. The writing of cormprehensive collection development policy statements using the RLG Conspectus to evaluate subject collections requires that collection management librarians and reference librarians work closely together and integrate the development of the reference collection into overall collection development plans for the library. This article discusses some of the functions of collection management divisions and the potential components of a Conspectus-based comprehensive collection development policy statement. The sharing of the process between the collection management librarian and the reference librarian/selector is described. One way to promote the relevancy of an academic law library is to create a special collection that generates interest in the patron base; a popular collection is a viable way of reinventing a law library's image in the hearts and minds of the law school community. Popular collections have been championed by general academic librarians because they promote reading and literacy, the use of the library as a place, and such collections represent the shift toward a user focused library model. Using data collected from interviews and analysis of collection development policies this article presents models of popular collections currently in use at academic law libraries, as well as considerations for the creation of such collections.  相似文献

This section presents techniques, practices and specific strategies by which documents collections can be made more effective. It also highlights individual documents collections and addresses issues pertinent to forthcoming government policies and regulations.Many law libraries have become selective depository libraries under provision of Public Law 95–261 passed on April 17, 1978. The Law Library at Southern Illinois University is one such selective depository library. The decision about whether to integrate or separate documents is usually based on the local situation, and the decision of this library to integrate depository documents into the collection was made after reviewing local library factors. This article describes the practices of managing an integrated documents collection including technical processing of paper and microfiche documents, collection development and maintenance, and reference service.  相似文献

文章以北美研究图书馆协会的8所高校图书馆为调查对象,通过网站访问的方式,从地理馆藏资源概况、馆藏发展方式、馆藏发展政策、建设项目、争取外界支持等方面对这些高校图书馆地理馆藏建设现状进行调查。调查发现:基于丰富的地理馆藏资源,北美高校图书馆开展了嵌入式学科服务,并多渠道发布动态信息对地理馆藏资源进行推广。文章对我国高校图书馆地理馆藏建设与服务的启示为:重视地理馆藏的积累、重视地理馆藏相关政策的制定、重视基于地理馆藏开展创新服务、重视地理馆藏推广工作。  相似文献

Research has shown that faculty involvement in library collection development is directly proportional to the size of the library collection itself; specifically, as library collection size increases, faculty involvement in library collection development decreases. Conversely, the opportunity for faculty involvement in library collection development is enhanced in the small-college setting where collection development is a collaborative effort between the faculty, who serve as the counterparts of subject bibliographers in larger university settings, and librarians, who both oversee the collection development process and serve as bibliographers in general and interdisciplinary subject areas. The case study documents the collection development philosophy, selection and acquisitions policies, and accounting procedures used at the Iris Holt McEwen Library and LaRose Resources Center at Elon College in North Carolina. The interrelatedness of selection, acquisition, and accounting processes as well as the collaboration between librarians and faculty in collection development are emphasized. Curriculum materials center (CMC) collections in academic libraries play a vital role in supporting teacher education programs. The collection items consist of print and non-print materials including nontraditional items such as kits, games, models, and toys. Following a comprehensive literature review of research on CMC collections, this study seeks to raise awareness of the role played by curriculum materials centers in the history of teacher education and the challenges faced by the CMC librarians. The article provides a general overview of the CMC at Long Island University (LIU) Post library and describes local collection development strategies and issues in collection access and maintenance.  相似文献
