Twenty-two faculty and graduate students were interviewed in one college of education in order to understand what the college
and its constituents view as the skills, habits of mind, and dispositions needed to obtain a Ph.D. in Education. Analysis
of the data was conducted using professional socialization as a theoretical framework, allowing for an understanding of the
different perspectives of this topic as viewed through a developmental lens. Implications for theory and practice are included.

Since many teachers and students recognize other kinds of knowledge (faith) based on other ways of knowing, consideration
of these realities is appropriate for the science education community. Understanding the multitude of ways that clergy view
relationships between science and faith (i.e. alternative ways of knowing) would assist in understanding various ways that
people address complex issues arising from ideas about science and faith. We administered a questionnaire composed of multiple-choice
and short answer items to 63 United Methodist ministers. Findings included (1) that formal, organized faith contexts (e.g.
church services) serve as informal science education opportunities, (2) participants demonstrated considerable diversity regarding
the types of relationships developed between science and faith, and (3) participants recognized a need exists for better understandings
of science and its relationship to faith for them, their colleagues, and their congregations.

This paper reviews the research conducted in the last 20 years on the application of technology in support of collaborative
learning in higher education. The review focuses primarily on studies that use Internet-based technologies and social interaction
analysis. The review provides six sets of observations/recommendations regarding methodology, empirical evidence, and research
gaps and issues that may help focus future research in this emerging field of study.

Middle grades science teachers need professional support in practice as they implement new inquiry-based science. Professional
development schools can provide this bottom-up support through connecting preservice and inservice teacher education programs
in classroom practice. In this study, coteaching arrangements with secondary science education majors provided additional
teachers in the classroom to support a materials-rich curriculum and the needed associated pedagogies. Science education majors
provided needed assistance in troubleshooting difficulties with the new curriculum. They also provided needed content knowledge
to support inquiry, along with creating moments and space for teachers to reflect on inquiry practice. Ongoing assistance
by preservice teachers allowed inservice teachers to progress from logistical concerns in implementing kit curriculum to concerns
regarding student learning and the supporting professional development.

Two studies were conducted to evaluate the extent to which visual discrimination (VisD) skills play a role in developing letter
identification abilities, which are essential in learning to read. Results from a correlational analysis of 73 4- and 5-year-olds
revealed a significant association between VisD and letter identification abilities, which was not moderated by estimated
nonverbal or verbal abilities or lexical access. Stronger VisD abilities also were positively associated with better phonemic
awareness skills, presumably because of the association between letter knowledge and phonemic skills, or letter-sound correspondence.
A pilot study explored the benefit of visual discrimination training of letter-like forms to letter learning for a subset
of 28 children with below average lowercase letter identification abilities. Only letter-name training significantly impacted
lowercase letter identification; visual discrimination training did not further enhance performance. Implications for theory
and applications to interventions aimed at children at risk for reading delays are discussed.

This article reports on the development of a methodology that integrates virtual and hands-on inquiry in a freshman introductory
biology course. Using a two time × two order-condition design, an effective combination (blend) of the two environments was
evaluated with 39 freshman biology participants. The quantitative results documented no significant effect of presentation
order but demonstrated a significant effect of the combined learning experience. The qualitative results showed a strong preference
by students for the virtual work preceding the hands-on laboratory. The study provides practitioners an effective alternative
to traditional instructional practices by combining virtual and hands-on inquiry learning.

Bringing the Classroom to the Web: Effects of Using New Technologies to Capture and Deliver Lectures
Technology expands instructional options for faculty, and this study examines the differential learning effects of offering
a lecture on physics to students in a traditional classroom versus internet video formats. Based on an experiment conducted
in a natural educational context, results indicate enhanced transfer of lecture information in the video formats relative
to the live condition, with students also responding more positively to personalized video presentation.

Sixteen Minnesota families with children with disabilities participated in a 2-year interview study of their care experiences.
Findings show that families developed a network of care providers, struggled to pay additional costs for care, were not informed
of community services and programs, and believed that their children received adequate child care. This study highlights the
need to provide information to families and providers and to link services in both rural and urban communities.

An international comparison using a diagnostic testing model: Turkish students’ profile of mathematical skills on TIMSS-R 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This study illustrates how a diagnostic testing model can be used to make detailed comparisons between student populations
participating in international assessments. The performance of Turkish students on the TIMSS-R mathematics test was reanalyzed
with a diagnostic testing model called the Rule Space Model. First, mathematical and cognitive skills (‘attributes’) measured
by the test were determined. One hundred sixty-two items were coded in terms of their attribute involvement, creating an incidence
matrix—the Q-matrix. Using the Q-matrix and the student response data, each student’s attribute mastery profile was determined.
Mean attribute mastery levels of Turkish students were computed and compared to those of their American peers. It was shown
that Turkish students were weak in algebra and probability/statistics. They also demonstrated poor profiles in skills such
as applying rules in algebra, approximation/estimation, solving open-ended problems, recognizing patterns and relationships,
and quantitative reading.

This paper presents Project InterActions, a series of 5-week workshops in which very young learners (4- to 7-year-old children)
and their parents come together to build and program a personally meaningful robotic project in the context of a multigenerational
robotics-based community of practice. The goal of these family workshops is to teach both parents and children about the mechanical
and programming aspects involved in robotics, as well as to initiate them in a learning trajectory with and about technology.
Results from this project address different ways in which parents and children learn together and provide insights into how
to develop educational interventions that would educate parents, as well as children, in new domains of knowledge and skills
such as robotics and new technologies.

This study examined (1) the potential influence of oral language characteristics of two languages that bilingual children
acquire on their PA and (2) the relationship of PA in L1 with PA and literacy skills in L2, using data from Korean–English
bilingual children. Thirty three Korean–English bilingual children, composed of two subsamples from two different locations/bilingual
programs, participated in the study. The findings showed that the sample of bilingual children from two bilingual programs
differed in their mean performances on intrasyllabic phonological awareness in Korean (i.e., rime awareness and body awareness).
Furthermore, children’s Korean rime awareness, but not body awareness, was positively related to their phonological awareness
and literacy skills in English. Finally, these children’s phonological awareness in Korean made a positive contribution to
English decoding skills even after controlling for their English sight word reading skills. The results are discussed in light
of interlingual influence on bilingual children’s phonological awareness.
