This article examines the role of noise in various aspects of Jean‐Luc Godard's filmmaking practice. Beginning with an analysis of 2 ou 3 choses que je sais d'elle (1966), it suggests that the loud noise on the soundtrack functions to disrupt the search for meaning in this film that is precisely about knowledge and cognition, providing an image of thought as an unpredictable and uncontrollable process. The influence of 1970s theoretical biology and information theory is analysed in Sauve qui peut (la vie) (1979) which applies Henri Atlan's ‘order from noise’ principle to the composition of shots, the construction of scenes and the development of narrative. Finally Godard's presentation of a complex, deterritorialised capitalist economy is considered in Nouvelle Vague (1990), and it is suggested that Godard's creation of aesthetic events – both through editing and through sound design – implies a different conception of temporality to the sequential logic of financial speculation and risk management. 相似文献

The political, military and media rhetoric of the March–April 2003 invasion of Iraq is interpreted as a phenomenon of power in relation to an understanding of culture as a site of denegation. Patterns of tautology, euphemism and equivocation are identified and their rhetorical appeal analysed in terms of the denegational structure of each of these figures. The essay is thus governed by an understanding of figuration as instrumental, not ornamental; it shows how rhetoric can be studied as a cultural phenomenon and argues by example that a pragmatics of troping is crucial to such a study. 相似文献

Economic rationality and reciprocal help are values that are often posed as contradictory within exchanges. However, there are instances when these values work in tandem, such as when justifying informal purchases of work, svart arbete, in contemporary Sweden. Svart arbete are omnipresent exchanges in Swedish society, and there are many reasons for performing them. On the one hand, a good deal is part of everyday social life when people help each other. On the other hand, a good deal also reinforces views that economic rationalities are values that do not exclusively adhere to formal markets. This article focuses on the values that construct the ‘good deal’ when getting your car fixed informally. These overlapping and somewhat contradictory values in theory, but commonplace in practice, illustrate how notions of reciprocity and economic calculations interweave and are difficult to entangle one from the other. The ‘good deal’ thus concerns how illegal, yet licit purchases of services are made acceptable when posing them as cheap and simple transactions that simultaneously invoke a realm of closer relations. 相似文献

The worlds of the living and the dead might seem irrevocably cut off from one another. Nevertheless, an important strand of modern thought attempts to find some form of intelligibility emanating from the dead. Paul de Man's discussion of prosopopoeia suggests the possibility of giving voice to the dead, though this turns out to be a form of delusion inherent in language. Emmanuel Levinas, arguing against Heidegger, seeks to maintain a relationship with the other beyond death, and Giorgio Agamben tries to find meaning in the silent testimony of victims of the Holocaust. This article examines these various attempts to mediate with the dead and suggests that it may be impossible to eliminate the risk of imposing our own words on those who cannot speak. However, a readiness to be surprised by unanticipated meanings may be the necessary condition to finding signifying sources outside ourselves. 相似文献

This paper presents a detailed analysis of the measured data on the indoor air of an historical building: tezone 105 of the Arsenale in Venice. During one year of measurements, the indoor air temperature and the air humidity have been collected: the probes have been placed in different sites in order to provide total control of the microclimate. The status of the internal walls has been checked by means of the measurement of the surface temperatures by different sets of thermal resistances. The data collected point out the water wall imbibition and the high thermal capacity of the building envelope. The collected information could be used for the design of the thermal system. 相似文献

How should we write about markets? What responsibilities does this writing bring upon us? This paper offers an immanent critique of ‘market studies’ scholarship, and through this a call to reflection and reformed action. Turning the intellectual framework of market studies upon itself, we come to see its texts as performative and agential. We discuss these qualities and the associated responsibilities via a reading of literature from the domain of ethnography. An auto-ethnographic sketch of market writing allows us to consider the problematic nature of expertise for market studies scholars and the agency and power of our texts. We find a dual moment of performativity from which our texts emerge more powerful than their authors. On this basis we offer a vision of critical interventions embedded in our texts, underpinned by the intellectual axioms of the market studies programme. 相似文献

The funeral monument of Maarten Tromp, in the Old Church of Delft (the Netherlands), is partially built with Tournai stone, a grey-blackish limestone from the Wallonia region (Belgium). This stone is suffering a severe delamination and scaling, which has, in the course of the centuries, led to a considerable material loss from the surface of some of the stone elements. In order to identify the damage process and define a sound basis for the conservation of the monument, a research plan was set-up including, next to the tests and analyses on the stone, a 1-year monitoring of the microclimate in the church and the investigation of the structure of the monument as well as its connections to the adjacent walls. First of all, the stone type was identified by macroscopic features and by thin section microscopy. The moisture distribution in the monument and in the adjacent walls was gravimetrically determined on samples taken at different height and depths. The content and type of salt in the Tournai stone from the monument were determined by X-ray diffraction and ion chromatography, and the results compared to those obtained for the fresh stone. The analyses showed the presence of considerable amount of gypsum, together with a low content of soluble salts (chlorides and nitrates). The SEM-EDS observations showed that gypsum is mainly crystallizing in cracks between the layers of the material. The damage mechanism and the influence of salt on the decay were further investigated by combining hygroscopic moisture uptake, hygric dilation (RH cycles between 50% and 95% RH) measurements and SEM-EDS observations; all measurements were performed both on stone sampled from the monument and, as comparison, on fresh stone specimens. The results show that gypsum is the main salt present, but its role in the damage is not significant. The naturally thin laminated structure of the stone together with the considerable hygric dilation seem to be the main causes of the delamination observed in this stone. 相似文献

The paper introduces a concept of a ‘negotiated space’ to describe university researchers’ attempts to balance pragmatically, continually and dynamically over time, their own agency and autonomy in the selection of research topics and pursuit of scientific research to filter out the explicit steering and tacit signals of external research funding agencies and university strategies and policies. We develop this concept to explore the degree of autonomy researchers in fact have in this process and draw on semi-structured interview material with research group leaders in Finland and the UK, in the former in seven research fields, in the latter in two fields. First, the analysis reveals that topic selection is strongly filtered by the intra-scientific factors. In topic selection researchers have more leeway, a broader negotiated space than in research content, that is, in the ways in which they pursue their research, which are more affected by funding opportunities and other contextual matters. Second, the ways which affect researchers’ agency include individual- and more aggregate-level acts and factors: at the individual level, researchers resort to different strategies to create a negotiated space, but at the more aggregate level field-specific factors play a role. In fields with multiple funding opportunities, which we call ‘shopping mall’ fields, researchers can have a broader negotiated space than in fields where funding is more based on ‘lottery’. In the latter, the researchers’ negotiated space is narrow and contingent on the outcome of the funders’ decisions. 相似文献
