This 3 year longitudinal study reports the feasibility of an Improving Teacher Quality: No Child Left Behind project for impacting teachers’ content and pedagogical knowledge in mathematics in nine Title I elementary schools in the
southeastern United States. Data were collected for 3 years to determine the impact of standards and research-based teacher
training on these aspects of teacher quality. Content knowledge for the scope of this research study refers to the knowledge
that teachers have about subject matter. Teacher quality is directly related to teachers’ “highly qualified” status, as defined
by the No Child Left Behind mandate. According to this mandate, every classroom should have a teacher qualified to teach in
his subject area and be able to “raise the percentage of students who are proficient in reading and math, and in narrowing
the test-score gap between advantaged and disadvantaged students.” Participants were six second grade and seven third grade
teachers of mathematics from nine schools within one failing school district. The implementation of standards-based methods
in the nine Title I Schools increased teacher quality in elementary school mathematics. In fact, qualitative and quantitative
data revealed significant gains in teachers’ mathematics content and pedagogical knowledge at both grade levels. 相似文献

In this study which was part of the DISUM-project, 224 ninth graders from 14 German classes from middle track schools (Realschule)
were asked about their enjoyment, interest, value and self-efficacy expectations concerning three types of mathematical problems:
intra-mathematical problems, word problems and modelling problems. Enjoyment, interest, value and self-efficacy were assessed
before and after a ten-lesson teaching unit promoting modelling competency related to the topics “Pythagoras’ theorem” and
“linear functions”. The study aimed to answer the following research questions: (1) Do students’ enjoyment, value, interest
and self-efficacy expectations differ depending on the type of task? (2) Does the treatment of modelling problems in classroom
instruction influence these variables? (3) Are there any differential effects for different ways of teaching modelling problems,
including a “directive”, teacher-centred instruction and an “operative-strategic”, more student-centred instruction emphasising
group work and strategic scaffolding by the teacher? The findings show that there were no differences in students’ enjoyment,
interest, value and self-efficacy between the three types of tasks. However, teaching oriented towards modelling problems
had positive effects on some of the student variables, with the student-centred teaching method producing the most beneficial
effects. 相似文献

Recent social policy reforms have sought to overcome the limitations of “First Way” strategies emphasizing the welfare state
and “Second Way” approaches advocating markets. Scholars and policymakers instead have begun to explore optimal synthesis
of the public and private sector in a new “Third Way” of leadership and change. According to one line of interpretation advanced
by Andy Hargreaves and Dennis Shirley, however, the Third Way as developed in education has ushered in a new orthodoxy of
testing, accountability, and data-driven decision making. This new orthodoxy is said to distract educators from their true
moral purposes. Hence, Hargreaves and Shirley have called for a new “Fourth Way” of change that draws upon international best
practices in education. In this interpretive essay for a Festschrift issue of the Journal of Educational Change celebrating Andy Hargreaves’ 60th birthday, Dennis Shirley revisits Fourth Way change architecture to inquire after the appropriate
role of new technologies in classrooms and schools. He retrieves the concept of mindful teaching and learning from the Fourth
Way change model and illustrates how it can be used as a lens to adjudicate various interpretations of the appropriate role
of new technologies in schools. 相似文献

Prior research documents the almost universal preference for schools that are “convenient”. Drawing on longitudinal interview
data gathered from 36 urban parents, I argue parents’ preference for “convenient” schools is more complex than previously
understood. Conceptions of geography used by policy makers do not adequately capture the ways in which parents think about
geography. Instead of thinking about school as solely a location one must travel to, parents’ preferences for schools are
informed by space and place-based notions of geography. Parents’ geographic preferences connect to larger, more deeply held
ideas about parenting, family life, identity, child development, and one’s place in the larger stratified society. Further,
these preferences do not exist in a vacuum. Parents’ geographic preferences have implications for the resources parents’ must
activate in order to make certain schools possible. Geographic preferences also compete with other school preferences. This
paper shows how notions of space and place shape the schools parents choose as well as the schools they are willing to consider.
The study describes a fuller, more accurate portrayal of parents’ thinking. It also draws attention to the ways in which existing
historical and social contexts influence parents’ understandings of choice policy. 相似文献

This forum considers argumentation as a means of science teaching in South African schools, through the integration of indigenous
knowledge (IK). It addresses issues raised in Mariana G. Hewson and Meshach B. Ogunniyi’s paper entitled: Argumentation-teaching
as a method to introduce indigenous knowledge into science classrooms: opportunities and challenges. As well as Peter Easton’s:
Hawks and baby chickens: cultivating the sources of indigenous science education; and, Femi S. Otulaja, Ann Cameron and Audrey
Msimanga’s: Rethinking argumentation-teaching strategies and indigenous knowledge in South African science classrooms. The
first topic addressed is that implementation of argumentation in the science classroom becomes a complex endeavor when the
tensions between students’ IK, the educational infrastructure (allowance for teacher professional development, etc.) and local
belief systems are made explicit. Secondly, western styles of debate become mitigating factors because they do not always
adequately translate to South African culture. For example, in many instances it is more culturally acceptable in South Africa
to build consensus than to be confrontational. Thirdly, the tension between what is “authentic science” and what is not becomes
an influencing factor when a tension is created between IK and western science. Finally, I argue that the thrust of argumentation
is to set students up as “scientist-students” who will be considered through a deficit model by judging their habitus and
cultural capital. Explicitly, a “scientist-student” is a student who has “learned,” modeled and thoroughly assimilated the
habits of western scientists, evidently—and who will be judged by and held accountable for their demonstration of explicit
related behaviors in the science classroom. I propose that science teaching, to include argumentation, should consist of “listening
carefully” (radical listening) to students and valuing their language, culture, and learning as a model for
“science for all”. 相似文献

PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN SENEGAL: ANALYSING THE REASONS FOR (NON) ENROLMENT – This study focuses on Senegal, where the education
system is split between traditional Koranic schools and purportedly “modern” public schools, which have been compulsory since
1990 but which are currently attended by only two-thirds of children eligible to enrol. The article argues that a number of
psychosocial factors need to be studied in order to understand this issue fully. By analysing responses gathered from 20 parent-child
units, the authors reveal: (a) how parental identity strategies affect how they choose to school their children, and (b) how
children’s attitudes are shaped in different ways depending on whether they attend “traditional” or “modern” schools. 相似文献

While the “model minority” stereotype of Asian Americans and its negative effects has been documented elsewhere, relatively
little attention has been paid to how recent Asian immigrant students begin to embrace the stereotype while in schools. This
study explores the identity formation process for a group of recent Korean immigrant students as “model minority” in an urban
high school to empirically document the process. Through interviews and observations, I learned that the immigrants acquired
an unauthentic American identity as a racial minority, constructed their status as “model minority” in response, and enacted
the stereotype as they sanctioned those who couldn’t live up to the stereotype. The aim is to add to the body of knowledge
on the school experiences of recent Asian immigrants. 相似文献

Australia is often portrayed as a place in which young people are in jeopardy. In 19th century literature and art, the recurring
motif of a child lost in “the bush” became an increasingly significant dimension of European settlers’ experiences of Australia,
whereas during the latter half of the 20th century analogous cultural narratives shifted towards urban environments and the
plight of young people endangered by their parents’ generation. In contemporary popular culture, Australia’s cities and suburbs
are places where children are aborted, abandoned, exploited, murdered or never conceived. Like the bush-lost children before
them, these “at risk” young people symbolise adult fears of self, society, and the future. My concern is that the most common
public policy response to these persistent fears and insecurities is to retreat to a politics of complexity reduction. Many
politicians and public opinion leaders see teachers and schools as being in the vanguard of people and institutions dedicated
to Australian children’s educational ruin, and simplistically seek to “protect” them with blunt instruments such as back-to-phonics
literacy and a national curriculum. I argue that Australia’s young people are much more seriously endangered by the symbolic
violence of those who position them as docile receptors of whatever schools and teachers serve up to them, and who treat them
as passive screens upon which to project their own anxieties. 相似文献

Conclusion Although many questions remain unanswered, these early translations of the AECT Code of Ethics will be available at the AECT
Web site to ensure that access to the principles is offered in languages other than English. As they become available, more
translations will be added to the English, Farsi, French, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, and Spanish versions. The translations
will be saved as PDF files to retain the unique characters of each language.
Additional translators with expertise in both educational technology and the targeted languages will be identified. Exploration
of ways to encourage debate regarding the viability of the translations within diverse cultures continues. The ultimate hope
is that collaboration among members of the professional ethics committee of AECT, the translators, and interested educators
will result in the development of a Code of Ethics that “speaks” across cultures and establishes a meaningful guide to professional
conduct around the world.

This article explores the transmission of practical knowledge in the XV and XVI centuries. According to cosmographer Egnatio
Danti, optics and other mathematical sciences had “been banished” from the main philosophical schools of his period, and “the
little which remains to us is limited to some practical aspects learned from the mechanical artificers”. The “mechanical artificers”
were architects, painters and surveyors whose mathematical training constitutes the subject dealt with in this article. The
context of Danti’s remark was the letter to the “Accademici del Disegno” of Perugia which introduce his Italian translation
of Euclid’s Optics. After the great Medieval season of optical studies, in effect, this science progressed mainly through its practical applications,
especially through “that part of perspective which pertains to painting” (Piero della Francesca), and through the spread of
methods and instruments for measuring by sight. 相似文献

Burden of Acting Neither White Nor Black: Asian American Identities and Achievement in Urban Schools
Jamie Lew 《The Urban Review》2006,38(5):335-352
Ogbu’s theory of “burden of acting white” has been one of the most frequently cited studies to explain black and white achievement
gap. However, emerging studies have argued that Ogbu’s theory may be limited when examining variability of school achievement
among black and white students. Research shows that in addition to culture, other social forces, such as class, peer networks,
and school context may play a significant role when accounting for minority students’ academic aspirations and achievement.
In the midst of this on-going debate, however, there is a limited understanding of how, if at all, theory of “acting white”
plays a role for racial groups other than black and white students. By extending the discussion beyond a black-and-white discourse,
this research examines how Asian American students in two different social and economic contexts, negotiate their race and
ethnic identities. Framed by a prevalent model minority stereotype that conflates Asian Americans with whiteness, the findings
show that portrayal of Asian “success” much like black “failure” cannot be explained solely on their cultural orientation.
By comparing experiences of two groups of Korean American students—both high- and low-achieving—in different economic and
school contexts, this study illustrates how the two groups of Korean American students adopt different racial strategies depending
on their socioeconomic backgrounds, peer networks, and school contexts. Using Korean American students in urban schools as
a case study, this research complicates and challenges our understanding of the role of culture in school achievement and
illustrates how culture intersects with class, race, and schools.

This article presents a Vygotsky-inspired analysis of how a teacher mediated a “thinking aloud” whole-group discussion in
a 6th grade mathematics classroom. This discussion centered on finding patterns in a triangular array of consecutive numbers
as a phase towards building recursive and direct algebraic formulas. By a “thinking aloud” discussion we mean a conversation
wherein students exchange and further develop ideas-in-the-making with their peers under the teacher’s guidance. Drawing upon
Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics (SFL), we treated the selected discussion as a text. We then analyzed how the teacher
mediated the conjoined making of this text so that it served as an interpersonal gateway for students to practice searching
for patterns and signifying these patterns in propositional form. This analysis was guided by the following questions: How
did the discussion as a text-in-the-making mean what it did? What was the role of the teacher in the conjoined making of this
text? Our study illustrates the power of SFL for capturing the inner grammar of instructional conversations thus illuminating
the complexities and subtleties of the teacher’s role in mediating semiotic mediation in mathematics classrooms. 相似文献

Vygotskian theory and mathematics education: Resolving the conceptual-procedural dichotomy 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Jean Schmittau 《European Journal of Psychology of Education - EJPE》2004,19(1):19-43
The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that in spite of some superficial similarities the current mathematics reform in the
US based on constructivist principles differs substantially from mathematical education based on Vygotskian cultural-historical
theory (V.V. Davydov’s mathematics program), and to illustrate the manner in which Davydov’s program virtually obliterates
the conceptual-procedural division that has fueled the current “math wars”. Both constructivism and Davydov’s approach emphasize
the active character of students’ acquisition of mathematical concepts. Constructivists, however, begin the instructional
process from the children’s preexistent concepts while Vygotskians reorient it toward acquisition of what Vygotsky defined
as “scientific” rather than “spontaneous, everyday” concepts. A three-year study of the implementation of Davydov’s elementary
mathematics program in a school setting in the US found that the American children overcame the initial challenges of the
program, consistently resolved computational errors conceptually, and finally demonstrated the ability to solve high school
level mathematics problems. The curriculum appeared to foster the development of theoretical thinking, an explicit goal of
Davydov’s program, which constitutes its major value and educational significance. 相似文献

The funding of higher education in South Africa has in the recent past been a subject of animated debate. This debate has ranged from the adequacy of government funding of higher education, the suitability of the funding framework, to protestations against frequent tuition fee increases. At present, the debate is mainly about “free” higher education. Unlike most African countries, South Africa has an established history of cost sharing. But, for a while now, students, especially Black students, have been demanding tuition free higher education even though the country has a student financial aid scheme to support talented but poor students. The demands for tuition free higher education suggest, among others, the possible existence of financial barriers to higher educational opportunities. This paper is a sequel to the debate on free higher education in South Africa. It seeks, in the main, to understand and examine the rationale and drivers for the students’ demand for “free” higher education. What are the financial barriers to higher educational opportunities that the current funding architecture has failed to address? Secondly, why are students demanding free higher education when there is a scheme to support talented but poor students? Is cost sharing inconsistent with the country’s post-apartheid transformation policy in higher education? Finally, is “free” higher education the panacea to the access and participation challenges facing Black students? 相似文献

This response to Mitchell and Mueller’s “A philosophical analysis of David Orr’s theory of ecological literacy” comments on
their critique of Orr’s use of the phrase “ecological crisis” and what I perceive as their conflicting views of “crisis.”
I present my views on ecological crisis informed by standpoint theory and the definition of crisis as turning point. I connect
the concept of turning point to tipping point as used in ecology to describe potentially irreversible changes in coupled social-ecological
systems. I suggest that sustainable societies may provide models of adaptive learning in which monitoring of ecological phenomena
is coupled to human behavior to mitigate threats to sustainability before a crisis/tipping point is reached. Finally, I discuss
the Hawai‘i State Department of Education’s removal of its Indigenous science content standard Mālama I Ka ‘Āina, Sustainability and its continued use in community-based projects. 相似文献

In an era of rapid global economic and social change, educational institutions like schools and universities are struggling
to keep their curricula and programs relevant. Singapore’s schools are no exception, especially when education is viewed as
the essential element for maintaining the nation’s global competitiveness in ways that are totally disproportionate to its
size. The current shift from an ‘efficiency-’ to an ‘ability-’ driven paradigm in education, however, is increasing uncertainty
and raising the stakes in an already pressurized system where schools, educators and students constantly compete for top academic
awards and rewards. The concept of “partnership” in Singapore education is a significant, relatively new, trend that has caught
on among local schools only since the late-1990s, with the focus on creating better “total” learning environments for students.
This paper analyses the challenges of matching rhetoric with professional practice with regard to school–home partnerships
in Singapore, and concludes that the key to authentic collaboration lies in the mutual appreciation and valuing of diversity
as well as a deep sense of shared responsibility by all parties concerned. 相似文献

Individuals and Leadership in an Australian Secondary Science Department: A Qualitative Study 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Wayne Melville John Wallace Anthony Bartley 《Journal of Science Education and Technology》2007,16(6):463-472
In this article, we consider the complex and dynamic inter-relationships between individual science teachers, the social space
of their work and their dispositions towards teacher leadership. Research into the representation of school science departments
through individual science teachers is scarce. We explore the representations of four individual teachers to the assertions
of teacher leadership proposed by Silva et al. (Teach Coll Rec, 102(4):779–804, 2000). These representations, expressed during
regular science department meetings, occur in the social space of Bourdieu’s “field” and are a reflection of the “game” of
science education being played within the department. This departmentally centred space suggests an important implication
when considering the relationship between subject departments and their schools. The development of an individual’s representation
of teacher leadership and the wider “field” of science education appears to shape the individual towards promoting their own
sense of identity as a teacher of science, rather than as a teacher within a school. Our work suggests that for these individuals,
the important “game” is science education, not school improvement. Consequently, the subject department may be a missing link
between efforts to improve schools and current organizational practices. 相似文献

Educational researchers have suggested that computer games have a profound influence on students’ motivation, knowledge construction,
and learning performance, but little empirical research has targeted preschoolers. Thus, the purpose of the present study
was to investigate the effects of implementing a computer game that integrates the prediction-observation-explanation (POE)
strategy (White and Gunstone in Probing understanding. Routledge, New York, 1992) on facilitating preschoolers’ acquisition of scientific concepts regarding light and shadow. The children’s alternative
conceptions were explored as well. Fifty participants were randomly assigned into either an experimental group that played
a computer game integrating the POE model or a control group that played a non-POE computer game. By assessing the students’
conceptual understanding through interviews, this study revealed that the students in the experimental group significantly
outperformed their counterparts in the concepts regarding “shadow formation in daylight” and “shadow orientation.” However,
children in both groups, after playing the games, still expressed some alternative conceptions such as “Shadows always appear
behind a person” and “Shadows should be on the same side as the sun.” 相似文献
