Every Chinese-language textbook starts out with the standard phrases for greeting people;but as an American,I always found myself1to speak freely when it came to seeing guests off at the door.Just a good-bye would notdo, yet that was allI had ever learned from the2books.So I would smile and nod, bowing like a Japanese and searching madly for words that would3over the visitor’s leaving and make them feel they would be4to come again. In my unease,I often hid behind the skirts of my Chinese hus…  相似文献

我相信……
《海外英语》2007,(6):21
For you my friend... I believe-that we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change. I believe-that no matter how good a friend is they're going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that. I believe-that you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life. I believe-that it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.I believe-that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.I believe-that you can keep going long after you can't.I believe-that we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.I believe-that either you control your attitude or it controls you. I believe-that heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.  相似文献

The Giving Trees
I was a single parent of four small children. Money was always tight, but we had a roof over our heads, food on the table, clothes on our backs, and if not a lot, always enough. My kids told me that in those days they didn't know we were poor. They just thought Morn was cheap I've always been glad about that. it was Christmas time, and although tilere wasn't money for a lot of gifts, we planned to celebrate with church and family, parties and friends, drive downtown to see the Christmas lights, special dinners, and celebrate by decorating our home. But the big excitement for the kids was the fun of Christmas shopping at the mall. They talked and planned for weeks ahead of time, asking each other and their grandparents what they wanted for Christmas. I dreaded it. I had saved S120 for presents. The big day arrived and we started out early. I gave each of the four kids a twenty dollar bill and reminded them to look for gifts about four dollars each. Then everyone scattered. We had two hours to shop; then we would meet back at the "Santa's workshop" display.  相似文献

Why Do We Lie
As little children, most of us were taught to be honest from stories and tales, so we knew the importance of telling the truth. Even though we now know that honesty is the best policy (政策) , why do we often tell lies in our everyday life? The fact is that we lie for many reasons.  相似文献

Mother’s Love
Who gave birth to me 14 years ago. Of course, my mother. My grandma often tells me when I was just born, I looked so small and thin, only nearly 5 Chinese pounds. So doctors put me into a warm box for weeks. My mother came to see me everyday although she was weak. I can't feel my mother's love at that time but I can feel it from my grandma's words. I was so thin and small when I was a baby, so I was always ill in my childhood. A day of my sixth year, I didn't feel well and had a stomac…  相似文献

A missing life
I was shocked seriously when hearing the news that a middle school student murdered his schoolmate just for a girl. At this moment, I choose to be silent rather than hurried discussions.A little life had gone leaving and taking away nothing, what should we do but feel sad, or angry, or regretful inwardly? However, on the other hand, why did the student do that? what seems to be particularly normal, yet results in a terrible conflict.  相似文献

After a few moments of disappointment,I adjust my expectations and imagine the sheer scale of the effort.I remind myself that the most attractive forms on the planet are often ones for which no particular purpose springs to mind, fascinated as we are by the brute pointlessness of ancient lines on the landscape lines that can only really be appreciated from above.  相似文献

我的人生观
How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people-first of all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness is wholly dependent, and then for the many, unknown to us, to whose destinies we are bound by the ties of sympathy. A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am often oppressively aware that I am engrossing an undue amount of the labor of my fellow-men. I regard class distinctions as unjustified and, in the last resort, based on force.I also believe that a simple and unassuming life is good for everybody, physically and mentally.  相似文献

Children often smile toothy smiles, even from ear to ear into their voices, talking excitedly about the cartoon characters they've seen in the magazines. On seeing this, their parents often feel so puzzled that they simply can't make head or tail of what they've seen in the very same magazines. Why? Because it's believed that cartoons can create a world-wide connection among children of one and the same generation, but not more or different generations.  相似文献

Mother's Day is coming soon.As a child,I think we should do something useful for our mothers and make them happy. One of the ways to celebrate Mother's Day is to give our mothers a day off.Let them relax while the rest of the family are doing the housework.Firstly,we should send our mothers some flowers or special small presents and say "Happy Mother's Day" to them.Secondly,we should do some housework, such as washing the dishes, cleaning the room and washing the clothes. We can also tell some jokes to our mothers and tell them something interesting in our school.I think these things can make our mothers happy. Finally,we should cook delicious food for our mothers. It's important for the whole family to have dinner together, because it will make our mothers feel happy.  相似文献

I Miss a Place
I'll never forget the days I spent in the countryside. When I was seven,my parents sent me to the countryside to live with my grandparents. Around my grandparents' house grew many fruit trees and I used to play in the wood. My grandparents were always telling me not to climb the trees, for they were afraid that I might fall off the trees. But I often climbed up and down the trees secretly, picking fruits. I like eating fruits. Once I asked some children to climb up the trees with a ladder to pick fresh fruit. Now my grandparents didn't seem to mind much. Instead, they smilingly told us to be  相似文献

My attitude towards my home has changed cyclically, like the seasons. As a young boy, I appreciated the comfort and security of a familiar place; a safe haven from the vagaries and vicissitudes of the world. As I grew up, I started to feel limited by my surroundings; my developing mind and body yearning for freedom and ad- venture away from stifling rules that prevented either of these ideals from being attained. Now that I am a little older still, although I still strive for  相似文献

O ur clothes are a powerful tool that can make us feel better about ourselves. One way in which this works is by wearing different colors of clothes. Normally when we are sad, we will wear dark colored clothes. Oppositely, when we are happy, we often choose to wear brightly colored clothes. The rea- son for this is that our choice of color mir- rors how we are feeling. Those who don’t believe in the idea are often heard saying,“if only this truly worked”. Well in reply to those people, the…  相似文献

William Wordsworth was England’s Poet Laureate. He is the Romantic poet who is most often described as a"nature"write, and he is always sensitive to every subtle change in the world around him. In my opinion, his love for nature is boundless. To him, nature acts as a substitute for imaginative and intellectual engagement with the development of embodied human beings in their diverse circumstances. It’s nature that gives him knowledge and strength. In this paper, I want to narrow Wordsworth’s conception of nature, and then we can find the harmony in the community of men and nature.  相似文献

In cross-cultural communication,we often encounter several problems resulted from cross-cultural pragmatic failure. The reason for this phenomenon is that,as communicators, people often ignore the existence of pragmatic differences in social contact and human relations between Chinese and other foreign languages, and we are often confused about when, where, how, what and to whom we should speak. In this paper,I will try to discuss cross-cultural pragmatic failure, pragmatic differences between Chinese and the native speakers of English and what we should pay attention to in our ESL teaching.  相似文献

Many years ago,my uncle owned a restaurant at a small airport in Illinois. My mother was the assistant manager and I was the hostess. One afternoon,my mother and I went to a dine for lunch. Our waitress,Debbie, was so sweet that we took an immediate liking to her,and my mother offered her a job at my uncle's restaurant on the spot. Debbie accepted. We invited her to our home for dinner that evening and during our conversations with her,we learned that she had never married and that she had no boyfriend. She told us that five years before while on a flight back east, she met "her pilot" and that it was love at first sight.  相似文献
