Libraries today face an increasing challenge: to provide relevant information to diverse populations with differing needs while competing with Web search engines like Google. In 2009, a large group of libraries, including the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries, joined with Innovative Interfaces as development partners to design a new type of discovery tool. The concept of information portals best supports the research and instructional needs of our communities by organizing and presenting information that incorporates licensed databases, text, multimedia, and other relevant sources. The discovery tool under examination by University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Encore integrates searches of the catalog, locally created full-text and image sources, and articles from licensed databases with navigation options that facilitate narrowing and expanding search results. This information portal development is an ongoing process with the goal of providing a tool that is as easy to use as Web search engines and that preserves the quality that library users expect. This article explores the requirements for an information portal and describes the challenges University of Nebraska-Lincoln faced when implementing Encore. Statistics from the initial implementation are presented, along with recommendations for future usability studies to evaluate where additional improvements should be made.  相似文献

文章采用网络调查及文献调研法,从图片检索、音乐检索和视频检索三方面对中国的百度、Sogou和Soso,韩国的Naver、Nate和Daum,美国的Google和Yahoo!八大搜索引擎提供的多媒体检索服务进行分析与测评。调查结果显示,Yahoo!不提供音乐检索,其余调查对象都提供图片检索、视频检索和音乐检索三项服务。大多数搜索引擎公司的图片检索和视频检索都支持高级检索功能,Daum导入了语义检索,Google和Yahoo!引入了安全检索服务过滤有害信息。  相似文献

This paper presents an in-depth research investigation of the role information quality plays in the use of community municipal portals. These portals are a new type of website spearheaded by local governments and community agencies in response to citizen calls for a more user-friendly, comprehensive, and convenient way of accessing community-based and local government information via a single entry point. Prior empirical evidence on electronic government adoption and use shapes the study's theoretical model. The model was tested via a survey completed by 1279 respondents across five community municipal portal sites in the province of Ontario, Canada. The survey polled respondents' uptake and perceptions of these portals. Cross-validation using structural equation modeling analysis indicates that information quality plays a critical but indirect role in influencing a person's use of a community municipal portal. In addition, other end-user factors, namely perceived ease of use and compatibility, also affect usage. Importantly, the need to pay attention to the information quality of community municipal portals is raised as a means of rallying citizen response to this new type of website specifically, as well as to local government websites more generally.  相似文献

User satisfaction is a crucial factor for continual usage of e-Government services and for the success or failure of e-Government projects. The main challenge for Jordanians is what are the key determinants of their satisfaction? This paper aims to identify the key factors that determine Jordanians' e-Satisfaction with Jordan's e-Government services portal. Based on an extensive review of relevant literature, five hypotheses are formulated and five factors are identified (i.e., security and privacy, trust, accessibility, awareness of public services, and quality of public services) that may affect the Jordanians' level of satisfaction towards using the Jordan e-Government portal (www.jordan.gov.jo). Survey data from 400 employees in four universities in the northern region of Jordan were collected and used to test the proposed hypotheses. Based on multiple linear regression and factor analyses, our empirical analysis demonstrates several key findings. These findings indicate the usefulness and importance to unveil the key drivers of e-Satisfaction so as to provide feedback in a set of recommendations that will enable creating e-Government portals which are compatible with citizens' needs, desires, and expectations. They also provide insights for both practitioners and governmental policy-makers to enhance e-Government portals via accounting diverse factors of technical, behavioral, managerial, and motivational aspects. Finally, implications and recommendations of these findings were discussed.  相似文献

The emergence of standardized open data software platforms has provided a similar set of features to sustain the lifecycle of open data practices, which includes storing, managing, publishing, and visualizing data, in addition to providing an out-of-the-box solution for data portals. Accordingly, the dissemination of data portals that implement such platforms has paved the way for automation, wherein (meta)data extraction supplies the demand for quantity-oriented metrics, mainly for benchmark purposes. This has given rise to an issue regarding how to survey data portals globally, especially reducing the manual efforts, while covering a wide variety of sources that may not implement standardized solutions. Thus, this study raises two main problems: searching for standardized open data software platforms and identifying specific developed web-based software operated as data portals. This study aims to develop a method that deeply searches each web page on the internet and formalizes a machine learning classification model to improve the identification of data portals, irrespective of how these data portals implement a standardized open data software platform and comply with the open data technical guidelines. The contributions of this work have been demonstrated through a list of 1,650 open data portals generalized in a training model that makes it feasible to distinguish between a data portal (that may or may not implement a standardized platform) and an ordinary web page. The results provide new insights on how machine-readable, publicly available data are affected by artificial intelligence, with special focus on how it can be used to understand data openness worldwide.  相似文献

The rising number of data portals has been increasing demand for new techniques to assess data openness in an automated manner. Some methods have emerged that presuppose well-organized data catalogs, the availability of API interfaces and natively exposed metadata. However, many data portals, particularly those of local governments, appear to be misimplemented and developed with the classic website model in mind, which provides access to data only through user interaction with web forms. Data in such portals resides in the hidden part of the web, as it is dynamically produced only in response to direct requests. This paper proposes an automated method for assessing government-related data in the deep web on the basis of compliance with open data principles and requirements. To validate our method, we apply it in an experiment using the government websites of the 27 Brazilian capitals. The method is fully carried out for 22 of the capitals' websites, resulting in the analysis of 5.6 million government web pages. The results indicate that the keyword search approach utilized in the method, along with the checking of web pages for multifield web forms, is effective for identifying deep web data sources, as 1.5% of web pages with potential government data that are analyzed are found to contain data stored in the deep web. This work contributes to the development of a novel method that allows for the continuous checking and identification of government data from surface web data portals. In addition, this method can be scaled and repeated to assure the widest possible content coverage.  相似文献

Abstract

In the late 1800s, pictorialist photographers favored a diversity of photographic techniques, including the gum dichromate process. Sometimes superimposed over other photographic images such as platinum and silver prints, the gum dichromate process utilizes a light-sensitive mixture of gum arabic, pigment, and a potassium dichromate solution hand-applied onto a sheet of paper and exposed to light while in direct contact with a negative. The definitive identification of this process has proven to be a challenge due to many variations and intermingling of techniques used by photographers of this period. This research began with a search through the historic literature, followed by the creation of test samples based on historic recipes, and the X-ray fluorescence analysis of these tests. The identification of pigments and the presence of chromium have been associated with the gum dichromate or other dichromated colloid processes in the past. Research results reveal that the presence of chromium may have more complex sources, requiring a more discriminating approach and a modified protocol for the identification of gum dichromate photographs.  相似文献

Library orientations are a very common learning experience for residential and online students. These all have similar goals of introducing students to the library and helping them feel more comfortable in navigating the library. The Library Connection is a unique type of library orientation that provides meaningful feedback to students in a personalized, connected learning environment. This program is offered through digital badges. A conventional qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the text responses of students completing this orientation. Six interesting themes emerged from these data including student perceptions of the use of the library, developing advanced search techniques, and managing a complex information environment. Interesting trends include the disparities between student and instructor perspectives of their learning and the need for a hybrid orientation that provides scaled instruction while still giving meaningful feedback and personalized responses to students from librarians.  相似文献

Summary

Despite numerous cooperative collection development endeavors, the building of library collections has remained a highly individual and local practice. The physicality of bound volumes has posed a distinct limitation on our ability to share collections, although libraries have made huge strides in recent years. Electronic resources and the ability to digitize our physical holdings offer the potential to redirect our investments in collection building to the creation of a global network that would serve an international community of scholars. By facilitating the creation of discipline-based portals to knowledge resources, librarians can channel their efforts to the benefit of many without sacrificing the quality of local relationships. To accomplish this, libraries need to develop collectively built and managed Web sites that supplant the need for autonomous, selector-created “webliographies” and that greatly expand the number of sources that can be identified and described. Selectors, freed of the individual responsibility to shoulder the increasingly heavy and ultimately unsustainable load of tracking a proliferation of resources in a variety of formats and states of publication, can turn their attention to the capture of more elusive, but important, material; to more detailed evaluation of the use of information resources; toward improvements in the user interface of portals; or toward the transformation of scholarly communication, with the discipline-based portal serving as a magnet for attracting new forms of scholarly thought and research.  相似文献

Given the phenomenal growth in the variety and quantity of data available to users through electronic media, there is a great demand for efficient and effective ways to organize and search through all this information. Besides speech, our principal means of communication is through visual media, and in particular, through documents. In this paper, we provide an update on Doermann's comprehensive survey (1998) of research results in the broad area of document-based information retrieval. The scope of this survey is also somewhat broader, and there is a greater emphasis on relating document image analysis methods to conventional IR methods.Documents are available in a wide variety of formats. Technical papers are often available as ASCII files of clean, correct, text. Other documents may only be available as hardcopies. These documents have to be scanned and stored as images so that they may be processed by a computer. The textual content of these documents may also be extracted and recognized using OCR methods. Our survey covers the broad spectrum of methods that are required to handle different formats like text and images. The core of the paper focuses on methods that manipulate document images directly, and perform various information processing tasks such as retrieval, categorization, and summarization, without attempting to completely recognize the textual content of the document. We start, however, with a brief overview of traditional IR techniques that operate on clean text. We also discuss research dealing with text that is generated by running OCR on document images. Finally, we also briefly touch on the related problem of content-based image retrieval.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

With distance education rapidly expanding at many institutions, the successful promotion of services designed for distance learning faculty, staff, and students is essential since most of the students will never visit the library building.

While many libraries have created a logo for their main web page that is also used on publications and handouts, an evaluation of distance learning sites and portals reveals that few libraries use a logo specific for distance learning. Creating a brand identity is a marketing element underutilized in promoting distance learning library services.

In the fall of 2004, it was determined that a distance learning specific logo would help to better promote services. The logo is used on all the library's distance learning sites as well as publications including brochures, bookmarks, and presentations. The goal is to create a unique “brand” to unify all of the library's distance learning materials.

This poster session focuses on the history of the design and selection of the logo. During the creation process, several images were considered as logos. The poster describes the reasons for selecting one design over others, and includes tips for the institutional approval process.

This poster demonstrates the uses of the distance learning logo to brand presentations, publications, and Web pages to successfully increase use of distance learning services, and create a name for the services.  相似文献
